Borno State enhances role of women community leaders

The Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum has flagged off a 5 day workshop to enhance the role of women community leaders in preventing radicalisation and terrorism

The workshop organized by a non governmental organization, Cairo International Center on Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and peace-building through the Borno State Ministry of Women Affairs and social development

The Commissioner of Women Affairs And Social Development, Hajjiya Zuwaira Gambo, who spoke during the flag off said, “We are witnessing the opening ceremony for 2days capacity building activities by CCPA in collaboration with Borno State government, on capacity building on enhancing the role of women community leaders in preventing radicalisation and extremism leading to terrorism,

“The purpose of this training is to build the capacity of Nigerian women community leaders to bridge barriers of entry to terrorism and to enhance their community resilience by doing so, the training will cement women as one to change the narrative of extremism and radicalisation.

“On the second activities, is a two days capacity development workshop on comprehensive and Intergrated approaches to handle individuals who were formally associated with Boko-Haram /ISWAP in Nigeria”. 

Mr Ihad Awad, Ambassador Arab republic of Egypt to Nigeria, who gave his welcome address during the gathering, said “I am grateful to the Honourable Governor and the Government of Borno State for inviting me to take part in the launching of two capacity building activities organized in the framework of the thriving cooperation between governments of the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Federal Republic of Nigeria and in close partnership with the Borno State Government”.

He further said, “The objective of such partnership is to exchange knowledge and to share common experience with respect to the implementation of a wholistic approach to reestablishing normalcy, achieve stabilization and build peace in the communities and areas affected by insurgency , terrorism and extremism”. 

“This partnership is rooted in a longstanding and deep ties between our two countries. A partnership that is reflective of conviction and determination by our respective political leaderships to defeat terrorism and to unleash the potentials of this great state to develop”.

Similarly, Governor Zulum who was also in attendance, said “I would like to thank you for being here today, to bear witness to the ongoing partnership between Egypt , through the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution , Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding ( CCCPA ) , and the Borno State Government in realizing our common objective of creating sustainable pathways out of extremism in Nigeria , and Africa at – large.

“In the last 13 years , thousands of lives have been lost to the insurgency , societies have been destabilized and livelihoods have been stalled . The unprecedented waves of mass surrenders signal a pivotal moment for Nigeria , and Borno State in particular . We have to critically look between two extreme conditions and decide our future , to overcome an endless war and cautiously accept the surrendered terrorists . It also brings opportunities for conflict transformation , stabilization and increasing human development”.
