Lawmakers Charge Security Agencies To Free kidnapped Women In Borno State

The House of Representatives has called on security agencies to urgently free about three hundred women kidnapped in Borno state, Northern Nigeria while fetching fire woods in the bush.

The call followed a motion moved by Zainab Gimba from Borno state, on the floor of the House during plenary.

She prayed that the House calls on security agencies to as a matter of urgency free the abducted women.

She said that the recent abduction was the second largest abduction  after the Chibok Girls adoption by Boko Haram in April 2014

“Mr Speaker I want to bring to the notice of the House that about 300 women were abducted while fetching fire woods for domestic and commercial purpose in my constituency. I am calling on security agencies to as a matter of urgency see to the rescue of these women who went in search of their daily bread. Also note that is the second biggest number of abduction after the Chibok girls abduction that took place in 2014 while some of those girls are still in captivity,” Gimba said.

While ruling on the matter, the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu who presided over plenary said that the incidence was a sad one and called on security agencies to as a matter of urgency rescue the abducted women.

The Deputy Speaker said, “We as a house are pained that the families of the abducted persons are going through what they are going through at the moment. By next week, Hon Zainab you will bring the matter up in way of a motion so we know what your prayers are. 

“In the spirit of the women day celebration tomorrow, we pray that these women and those still in captivity be freed from their abductors. There is no better way to celebrate the women day without calling for the protection and release  of these women“.

The motion was therefore referred to the Committee on defence and NEMA for further legislative action.
