International Alert, a non-governmental organisation, has initiated plans to support the training of Cadets in the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) to improve operational effectiveness within the police.
During a visit to the Police Academy in Wudil, Kano State, the Country Director of International Alert, Dr. Paul Nyulaku-Bemshima, emphasised that the collaboration with the NPF’s Department of Training and Development aims to deepen understanding of the Police Act 2020 in the cadet training curriculum.
Funded by the UK Integrated Security Fund, this initiative responds to the high public expectations surrounding the police and acknowledges their critical role in Nigeria’s security architecture.
Dr. Nyulaku-Bemshima highlighted that International Alert has been actively engaging with the Nigeria Police, with this collaboration focusing on evaluating the current training practices related to the Police Act 2020. The goal is to identify areas for improvement and additional support to enhance the training’s impact on cadets.
He further noted the importance of thorough preparation, stating that inadequately trained officers can exacerbate existing issues within the police force. This engagement is particularly vital, as many graduates from this institution are deployed to various divisions across the country upon completion of their training.
“So ensuring that trainees here understand the Police Act 2020, the responsibilities of the police as well as what is needed for better service delivery is very critical because if we begin from here, then they are better equipped when they go out there to apply most of what is laid out in the Police Act 2020 which is Nigeria’s law that guides all of what happens around service delivery on the Nigerian police in Nigeria,” he said.

The Commandant of the Nigerian Police Academy in Wudil, Kano State, Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Sadiq Idris Abubakar, emphasised the Academy’s essential role in nurturing and developing future leaders in Nigeria’s security infrastructure. He expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming collaboration, which promises to be highly beneficial.
AIG Abubakar highlighted that the Nigerian Police Academy is a degree-awarding institution dedicated to training young individuals who will address the internal security challenges facing the country.
“So, it is positioned in such a way that the cadets will be developed mentally, physically, and morally to contribute their quota into the security situation of Nigeria. Teaching learning processes is always important because it helps in building up a person,” Abubakar added.
The visiting team comprised seasoned experts, Professors of Police Studies and Professors of Security Studies, committed to enhancing understanding within the Police about the Police Act 2020.
