The Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, has issued a stern warning to state workers, threatening immediate dismissal for anyone participating in the strike action called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The governor made the declaration during a press briefing at the New Government House in Abakaliki, the state capital.

This warning comes in response to the NLC’s recent announcement of a strike in states where the N70,000 minimum wage has not been implemented.

Governor Nwifuru emphasised that Ebonyi State has already complied with the new minimum wage, clarifying that it is an adjustment to the minimum wage and not an increase in salaries.

“I have partnered with Ebonyi NLC since I came to power as Governor. I have done everything possible to make all workers to be happy,” Nwifuru stated.

He expressed his frustration with the national NLC’s decision to include Ebonyi in a list of states failing to meet the minimum wage requirements, alleging that the state chairman has been providing misleading information to the national body.

The governor urged workers to disregard the NLC’s strike directive, warning that those who do not report for duty will not only forfeit their salaries but may also face immediate replacement.

He stressed that he would not allow anyone to disrupt the peace in our state.

It would be recalled that the Ebonyi State NLC Chairman, Professor Oguguo Egwu, had called for a strike due to the alleged non-payment of the national minimum wage.
