Hantavirus Outbreak Forces Cruise Ship Quarantine Near Tenerife

A cruise ship hit by a hantavirus outbreak is expected to arrive at Spain’s Tenerife island early Sunday, according to operator Oceanwide Expeditions.

The company said organisations from several countries, including the World Health Organisation (WHO), Dutch authorities and Spanish officials, are coordinating quarantine measures, health screenings and onward travel plans for passengers and affected crew members.

Oceanwide Expeditions said no passengers or crew aboard the Dutch-flagged HV Hondius were showing symptoms as of Friday evening.

Once the vessel docks at Granadilla port in Tenerife, Spanish authorities will oversee medical procedures and arrangements for passengers who may return home.

The Hondius had remained anchored near Cape Verde for days after the outbreak was reported and is now sailing toward Tenerife.

The outbreak has been linked to the deaths of three passengers, an elderly Dutch couple and a German woman aboard the expedition cruise ship, which departed southern Argentina on April 1 with fewer than 150 people on board.

The WHO said Friday there are six confirmed hantavirus cases, including the three fatalities, along with two suspected infections.
