A lawmaker representing Osun East Senatorial District, Senator Francis Fadahunsi, has thrown his weight behind the establishment of state police, describing it as a critical step towards tackling insecurity and improving public safety across Nigeria.
Reacting to the State Police Bill recently passed by the National Assembly, Senator Fadahunsi expressed concern over the rising cases of terrorism, banditry and other security challenges facing the country.
The Nigerian Legislature, the Senate and the House of Representatives recently passed the landmark Constitution Alteration Bill that will give room for the establishment of State Police across the federation.
Speaking with newsmen in Abuja, Senator Fadahunsi said that the Legislative actions is a major step in Nigeria’s decades-long debate to decentralised the country’s policing structure aimed at addressing the worsening insecurity.
The lawmaker said that a “decentralised policing structure would enable communities to respond more effectively to security threats while complementing the efforts of federal security agencies.”
”Community policing remains the foundation of effective security management, noting that local knowledge and grassroots intelligence are essential tools in combating crime and maintaining law and order,” he said.
Senator Fadahunsi, who is a ranking lawmaker in the 10th Senate also raised concerns about the state’s development trajectory, citing infrastructure deficits, security challenges, and inadequate utilisation of public resources for the people of Osun state.
He specifically bemoaned at the absence of a functional airport in Osun State and called for greater investment in projects capable of driving economic growth as well as improving the welfare of residents.
Senator Fadahunsi, who is the chairman Senate committee on Industries also spoke on the issue of illegal mining in the country.
He alleged that “several communities have witnessed extensive mining activities without corresponding development benefits.”
He therefore called for stronger regulatory oversight and greater transparency in the management of revenues generated from the sector.
Commenting on the political situation in the state, Senator Fadahunsi urged leaders to prioritise governance and service delivery over political conflicts.
He stressed that citizens deserve accountable leadership that focused on development, security, and economic prosperity.
The lawmaker also expressed confidence that the All Progressives Congress, APC will come out victorious in the coming Osun Governorship election scheduled for August 2026.
The Senator therefore called on residents of the State to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and actively engaged in democratic processes aimed at promoting development and good governance.
