Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has prohibited the cutting and burning of tree trunks for the purpose of making charcoal in Adamawa state. The Governor declared that the law prohibiting the cutting down of trees and the utilization of tree trunks to make charcoal for cooking will be strictly enforced.

The directive was initially issued by Governor Fintiri when he received traditional rulers visiting Yola, the state capital to pay homage to him at the Government House, followed by members of the state House of Assembly.

The Speaker of the House of Assembly, Bathiya Wesley, emphasised the obligation that lawmakers have to enforce the law prohibiting tree cutting.

“We have reached the firm decision that there should be no felling of trees or production of charcoal. All of us are expected to play our part to ensure that the law against tree cutting, which we have not been implementing, is now strictly implemented. I said this to the traditional rulers when they came.

“We must all do what we need to do in our respective capacities in this direction. We have to encourage our people to turn to sustainable alternatives to charcoal.”

The governor stated that his administration had decided not to allow the cutting of trees primarily for burning and making charcoal as deforestation had been discovered to lead to massive flooding across the state.

“We have seen places that were hitherto free of flooding now being frequently flooded, causing destruction to our farms, homes, and valuable assets,” he said.
