The African Democratic Congress (ADC), in a bold political move aimed at reshaping Nigeria’s political trajectory, has hosted its first-ever Coalition Convergence in Awka, Anambra State.

The event brought together a diverse alliance of political parties, civil society groups, and grassroots stakeholders united by a shared mission: to reclaim Anambra and offer a credible alternative to Nigeria’s faltering governance.

Held at Geo Gold Hotel in Awka, the convergence was attended by key figures from the Labour Party, People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Action Alliance, and representatives of professional, student, market, and artisan groups.

The gathering served as both a strategic political summit and a declaration of intent ahead of the November 8 governorship election.

In his welcome address, Anambra State Chairman of the ADC, Comrade Patrick Obianyo, described the meeting as “more than just a political event, it is a By Chinwe Onuigbo, Awka and a mission.”

He criticised the current state of the nation, citing insecurity, youth unemployment, and a creeping one-party system.

“We are here for the future of our children,” Obianyo said passionately. “Our great party has assembled a formidable coalition, the wise and the youthful, men and women of value, all aligned to restore dignity, governance, and visionary leadership to Anambra State.”

Obianyo emphasised that the coalition represents a sacred mission to rescue Anambra and restore its role as the “light of the nation.”

Representing ADC’s governorship candidate Mr. John Chuma Nwosu, Deputy Governorship candidate Sir Geoffrey Ndubuisi Nwobu (PhD), also known as Obuka Awka, painted a stark picture of national challenges.

“What we face today is nothing short of a national crisis, rampant corruption, mass poverty, kidnapping, banditry, and indecisive leadership,” Nwobu declared.

“ADC offers a veritable platform for those determined to change this narrative through perseverance, diligence, and people-focused governance.”

He announced that the official flag-off of the ADC state campaign is scheduled for June 11, 2025, promising a grassroots-driven, issue-based campaign to galvanize public support.

One of the highlights of the event was a keynote presentation by Professor Chukwuemeka Jaja Nwanegbo, former Head of the Political Science Department at Nnamdi Azikiwe University and Director at the university’s Centre for Peace, Security and Development Studies. In his lecture, titled “Building and Maintaining a Sustainable Coalition for Successful Engagement,” Nwanegbo emphasised the importance of coalitions in Nigeria’s political development.

“Winning elections and ensuring balanced governance requires coalitions anchored not just on numbers, but on shared values and commitments,” he said, urging stakeholders to prioritise unity, competence, and strategic engagement.

A political strategist and university don, Mr Patrick Omuku added that ADC’s uniqueness lies in its grassroots appeal and integrity.

“ADC is not just another political party; it is a movement of visionaries. We must work in a unique way to deliver on our shared mandate.”

Other political leaders and civil society representatives echoed support for the coalition. Labour Party chieftain Nnamdi Aniagor praised ADC’s initiative and pledged to take the message of unity and reform back to his base.

The event concluded with the symbolic distribution of ADC-branded polos and face caps to coalition partners, a gesture marking solidarity and the formal birth of a political alliance determined to provide a credible alternative voice for the people of Anambra and beyond.
