The National Orientation Agency, NOA, has advised Nigerians to check their blood pressure and cholesterol regularly as part of efforts to prevent cardiovascular diseases, CVDs.
The NOA Director in Jigawa State, Mr. Ahmad Tijjani, gave the advice in a message to mark the 2025 World Heart Day in Dutse.
World Heart Day is observed annually on September 29 to raise awareness about cardiovascular diseases, which remain the leading cause of death globally and a growing concern in Nigeria.

Mr. Tijjani noted that CVDs account for nearly 18 million deaths worldwide each year, representing about 31 per cent of all global deaths.
He said that in Nigeria, one in four adults is at risk of developing coronary artery disease, stressing that most heart-related deaths are preventable through healthy lifestyle choices.
Mr. Tijjani identified unhealthy diets high in salt, sugar, and saturated fats; physical inactivity; tobacco use; excessive alcohol consumption; high blood pressure; high cholesterol; obesity; diabetes; chronic stress; and poor sleep as major risk factors.
To address the challenge, he urged Nigerians to adopt healthy habits such as eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins; engaging in at least 30 minutes of daily exercise; quitting smoking; limiting alcohol intake; undergoing regular blood pressure and cholesterol checks; managing stress; and getting adequate rest.
Mr. Tijjani reiterated the commitment of the agency to raising awareness about cardiovascular diseases and other health conditions
