Akwa Ibom State has taken a significant step toward addressing its electricity challenges, as Governor Umo Eno convened a strategic meeting in Uyo to chart the course for sustainable electricity generation, distribution and sufficiency reform.
The meeting, held to review outcomes from the September 2025 Power Summit and deliberate on critical sector reforms, had in attendance members of the State Executive Council, Local Government Chairmen, and the State’s Technical Consultant on Power.

In his remarks, the Governor stated that the state is firmly on course in implementing the roadmap developed during the summit, stressing that achieving stable, accessible, and sustainable electricity requires a deliberate and well-coordinated process.

“We are firmly on course with the roadmap developed at the September 2025 Power Summit. The process is deliberate, structured, and focused on long-term results. While these reforms take time, the steps we have taken will soon begin to yield a visible impact.”
He also commended the level of alignment, support and shared commitment by the Local Government Chairmen, adding, “This unity is critical as we work to deliver stable, accessible, and sustainable electricity to our people.”
The State’s 31 Local Government Chairmen, led by Dr Uwemedimo Udo, commended the Governor for accelerating action to transform the state’s electricity sector and pledged their support.

Speaking to Voice of Nigeria, Udo said, “We are pleased to note that His Excellency the Governor has put in place a clear roadmap starting with the establishment of the State Electricity Regulatory Commission, the planned concession of Ibom Power Company to enhance its efficiency to create a functional Electricity market in the state.
“We also promised to collaborate with the state government in the provision of off grid Green Energy to some unserved households in the interim,” he added.
To drive implementation, the Governor announced the constitution of a seven-member committee headed by the Executive Assistant and Chief Delivery Advisor, Mr Aniefiok Johnson, comprising the Commissioner for Power, Iniobong Robson; the Dean and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mkpisong Frank Archibong; State ALGON Chairman, Dr Uwemedimo Udo; Chairman of Ikot Ekpene LGA, Mr Aniefiok Nkom; and Chairman of Ibeno LGA, Mrs Glory Ekah Effiong.

The committee is expected to harmonise proposals and develop a clear pathway for achieving steady electricity supply and has been given two weeks to submit its report.
Addressing the media, the State Commissioner for Information, Dr Aniekan Umanah, stated that the State Electricity Regulatory Commission has been established, adding that the names of commissioner nominees will soon be forwarded to the State House of Assembly for consideration and confirmation.
Providing a technical overview, the State’s Consultant on Power, Eyo Ekpo, explained that the reform process has been deliberate, structured, and legally grounded, guided by the principle of policy first, law second, and discipline in execution always.
He stressed that Ibom Electricity Holding Limited (LEHL) has officially been incorporated to serve as the holding company for the state’s electricity assets, including Ibom Power, PHED, to ensure proper management of the state’s shares and investments in the power sector.
Observers say this is another important step, marking a significant milestone in the state’s drive toward comprehensive and sustainable power sector reform and energy sufficiency.
Stakeholders have lauded this move, saying it reflects a coherent, disciplined and inclusive reform trajectory poised to redefine power access and economic resilience in Akwa Ibom State.
