The Anambra State Executive Council has approved the establishment of the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ASERC) to enhance electricity supply.

This decision follows the recent enactment of the Anambra State Electricity Law, signed by Governor Charles Soludo, which grants the state authority to generate electricity and license investors interested in power generation within the state.

Julius Chukwuemeka, the State Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, hailed the council’s approval as a crucial step towards the state government’s strategic investment in electricity generation. He explained that ASERC will be tasked with overseeing the generation of electricity to ensure a reliable and steady power supply for Anambra.

Commissioner Chukwuemeka emphasized that the establishment of ASERC affirms Governor Soludo’s commitment to economic development. “Reliable power supply is vital to driving the state’s industrial revolution,” he noted.

The commission will be responsible for implementing electricity policies, fostering private sector participation, and attracting investments that will stimulate infrastructural growth throughout the state.

This initiative builds on recent successes, including a Memorandum of Understanding between the Anambra State government and Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), which has led to the local manufacturing of prepaid electricity meters in Ozubulu, helping to close the metering gap.

Additionally, under Governor Soludo’s leadership, hundreds of transformers have been distributed to underserved communities across Anambra.

Further notable projects include the proposed establishment of Nigeria’s first electricity market and the construction of a new substation at the Igbariam campus of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU).

Aligned with the governor’s clean and green agenda, solar power systems have also been installed in various government buildings and water scheme facilities throughout the state, providing an eco-friendly alternative power source.
