All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, has withdrawn from the race for the party’s ticket in Anambra State amidst controversies and violence surrounding the delegates’ list.

The withdrawal comes after a day filled with chaos and uncertainty at the Dora Akunyili Women’s Development Centre, where the gubernatorial primary was scheduled to take place.

Delegates were reportedly undergoing accreditation in undisclosed hotels in Awka, with the event delayed and tensions running high.

The situation escalated earlier in the day when thugs hired by one of the aspirants engaged in a physical altercation with delegates at an accreditation point.

As a result, several delegates were injured, prompting three candidates, including Sir Paul Chukwuma and Mr Chuma Umeoji, to withdraw from the race.

In his withdrawal letter, Professor Okonkwo cited the violence and potential endangerment of his supporters as the primary reasons for his decision.

He expressed concern that the current state of the primary election process in Anambra State was inconsistent with his principles and values, leading him to prioritize the safety of his supporters over his political aspirations.

Despite his withdrawal, Okonkwo reaffirmed his commitment to public service and pledged to continue contributing to the development of Anambra State and Nigeria.

He also expressed his support for President Bola Tinubu’s development programs and the economic growth of the country.

The remaining candidates in the APC governorship race in Anambra State include Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, Mr Valentine Ozigbo, Engr Johnbosco Onunkwo, and Mr Edozie Madu.

The withdrawal of Professor Obiora Okonkwo has shifted the dynamics of the race, leaving the remaining contenders to vie for the party’s nomination in a tense and uncertain environment.
