The Anambra State Police Command has expressed concern over the growing trend of security operatives concealing their identities while providing protection to high-profile individuals in southeastern Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Sunday, police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga said the practice, particularly in non-operational, public-facing assignments such as VIP protection, poses significant security risks and could be exploited by criminal elements.

He noted that the use of masks makes it difficult to verify the legitimacy of operatives, increasing the risk of impersonation and unlawful activity carried out under the guise of official security duties.

While acknowledging that certain assignments may require tactical discretion, Ikenga stressed that concealing identities without proper authorisation undermines public safety and erodes trust in security institutions.

He added that the trend also threatens accountability and weakens coordination among security agencies operating within the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has directed all security agencies in the state to ensure that personnel on routine and protective duties remain clearly identifiable, except in officially sanctioned tactical operations.

“Identifiable security personnel remain a critical component of coordinated security efforts, particularly in an environment that demands strong inter-agency collaboration,” the spokesperson said.

The command reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and maintaining public confidence in law enforcement.
