Anambra State Governor, Professor Charles Soludo, has officially presented certificates of recognition to the newly elected traditional rulers of Ikenga, Oba, Ifite Anam, and Ichi communities, urging them to lead with integrity, uphold community constitutions, and serve as moral compasses in their domains.

The presentation ceremony took place at the Light House, Awka, where the governor formally recognised Igwe Chinonso Ezeokafor of Ikenga, Igwe Austine Chinedum Emelobe of Oba, Igwe Sunday Ozoemena of Ifite Anam, and Igwe Ifeanyi Okonkwo of Ichi.

While congratulating the monarchs, Governor Soludo emphasised that traditional leadership comes with great responsibility, reminding them that their mandates are derived from their people, not the government and must be guided by the town union constitutions that brought them into office.

“The certificates you hold today are not mere decorations; they represent the trust and expectations of your communities,” Soludo said. “The authority you wield stems from your people. As long as you abide by your community’s constitution and the values they uphold, your reign will be smooth.”

He added that the state is embarking on a broader value reorientation campaign, and called on the traditional rulers to support this by engaging youths and promoting community-based ethics. “You are the conscience of your communities. Lead by example so that our young people can proudly say, ‘This is who we are,’” the governor added.

The Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Mr. Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne, who was also present at the event, noted that the selection of the monarchs was carried out through a peaceful and transparent process.

He announced that the newly recognised rulers have been provided with a copy of the updated Traditional Rulers’ Law for their guidance.

“I wish to commend His Excellency for his unwavering support in deepening the integrity of the traditional institution and fostering inclusive development across Anambra communities,” Nwabunwanne said.

Speaking on behalf of the new monarchs, Igwe Sunday Ozoemena of Ifite Anam expressed gratitude to the governor and the state government for their dedication to restructuring the traditional institution.

“Thank you for the transformative work you are doing in Anambra State. The Council of Traditional Rulers is now more functional and better positioned to serve. We accept this responsibility with humility and are committed to serving our people diligently,” he said.
