Army Chief urges troops to sustain fight against bandits

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya has charged troops of the Nigerian Army to sustain aggressive offensives against insurgents and bandits who are precipitating insecurity in the country until they are decimated to a point of surrendering.

The COAS gave the charge while on an operational visit to  23 Brigade, Yola, where he received a brief on the security situation and the activities of the Brigade by the Commander, Brig Gen Aminu Garba.

Addressing troops of the Brigade, Gen Yahaya assured the troops that the challenges raised by their commander would receive the desired attention to enable them to perform their duties optimally.

A statement by the Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu said the COAS stressed the need for the troops to consistently train and bring their combat experiences to bear in decisively tackling the adversaries.

During the visit, the COAS commissioned two blocks of soldiers’ accommodation in line with his commitment to improve personnel’s welfare and boost troops’ morale. He urged them to maintain the facilities and put them to good use.

COAS appreciated the Government of Adamawa state for the financial support it rendered to the families of the fallen heroes.

The Army Chief equally appreciated the support of the people of Adamawa State to troops of the Nigerian Army, particularly the Governor, Umaru Fintiri for personally attending the burial of Late Brig-Gen Zurkushu and 7 other patriots.

Responding, Governor Fintiri extolled the efforts of the troops and the selfless sacrifice of the gallant officers and men of the Nigerian Army in maintaining peace and security of Adamawa State and the nation at large, while urging the troops to maintain professionalism in the conduct of their operations.

The COAS also paid a courtesy call on the Lamido Adamawa Alhaji Barkindo Aliyu Mustapha at his palace and stated that he was at the palace of the monarch to pay his respect and appreciate him for his unrelenting support to the Nigerian Army.

General Yahaya also stated that he was grateful for the peace-building effort of the traditional leader through preaching and promotion of peaceful co-existence amongst people of diverse ethnic extraction in his domain, urging the monarch to sustain the effort.

The COAS solicited the goodwill of the traditional leadership in continually encouraging the people to support the security agencies with credible information to enhance ongoing operations.

Responding, the Lamido prayed for the success of the NA and other security agencies in their operational engagements to stem the tide of insecurity and restore peace in the country. He called on all stakeholders and members of the public not to be reclusive, but to support the NA and other security agencies in their operations.
