Usman, who commended the state government for making the health sector a priority, which has enhanced healthcare delivery, however, added that “we call on relevant stakeholders to review our professional allowances and appoint nurses and midwives into key positions.

“We also call on the state government to implement the enhanced scheme of service for nurses and midwives, as well as hazard allowance. We want the government to implement the Consolidated Polytechnic and Colleges of Education Academic Salary Structure (CONPCASS) for our lecturers in the College of Nursing in the state.”

The zonal chairman urged the government to involve nurses’ decision-making and policy matters on health. “Government should provide insurance for nurses and midwives so that they will feel protected,” he added.

The Bauchi State Deputy Governor, Mr Auwal Jatau, said that the importance of nurses and midwives cannot be over-emphasised, considering their role in healthcare services to the citizenry.

Jatau, who described Bala Mohammed as a health-friendly governor, added that the state government had been doing its best to ensure that state-owned health institutions function effectively.

“Government made an assiduous effort to ensure the state-owned Aliko Dangote College of Nursing Science Bauchi gets accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to commence ND/HND in nursing and the programme has since commenced,” he said.

He appreciated the leadership of the NANNM and the Local Organising Committee for finding it necessary to initiate and organise the conference with a theme: “Leading Innovation Pathways, Transforming Nursing Midwifery Future.”
