Athletics: Mike Edwards Retains High Jump Title At Nigerian Trials
High jumper Mike Edwards claimed a second successive title in his event on Day 3 of the Nigerian World Championships/Commonwealth Games Trials, clearing a Season’s Best (SB) of 2.20m to win the Gold medal in Benin, Edo State.
Edwards’ winning mark is 5cm better than the distance he recorded at the African Championships in Mauritius where he claimed a historic medal, taking Silver to become the first Nigerian man to win a High Jump medal at the African Championships in nearly 30 years.
It was a keenly contested event at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, with National Sports Festival (NSF) Champion David Aya clearing a Season’s Best (SB) of 2.15m to take Silver, while Justin Jimoh took the Bronze medal with a Personal Best (PB) of 2.10m.
Prosper Chinecherem Nnamdi (Javelin)
Back home competing after throwing a Nigerian Javelin Record of 81.22m this season, Baylor University freshman Prosper Chinecherem Nnamdi successfully retained his National title, landing the spear at a distance of 78.07m to win the event.
Former Champion Samuel Kure who led at some point, had to settle for 2nd place with 74.46m.
The women’s event was won by Priscilla Zever who recorded a throw of 40.66m to finish ahead of Francisca Chukwudilim and Peace Eze.
