0

The UN human rights office (OHCHR), has expressed deep concern over the killing of at least ten protesters in Kenya.

OHCHR spokesperson, Ravina Shamdasani cited Kenyan police reports of at least 11 deaths, 52 injured police officers, and 567 arrests, while the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights reported slightly different figures: at least 10 fatalities, 29 injuries, 37 arrests, and two abductions.

Protests erupted in 16 counties, with police reportedly using live ammunition, rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannons.

Shamdasani also noted, “Reports of looting and destruction of public and private property in several locations.”

This week’s violence follows the deaths of 15 protesters and hundreds of injuries during demonstrations on June 25 in Nairobi and elsewhere.

Those protests were initially triggered by the anniversary of 2024 anti-tax demonstrations, which left at least 60 deaths and dozens allegedly abducted by the police.

The protests on Monday marked the 35th anniversary of the 1990 Saba Saba protests, which paved the way to multi-party democracy in Kenya.

Shamdasani said that, “UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, repeats his call for all reported killings and other alleged violations and abuses of international human rights law, including with respect to use of force, to be promptly, thoroughly, independently and transparently investigated.”

She noted that Kenyan police announcement of an investigation into the June 25 incidents and added that the UN human rights office stands ready to support national authorities in their efforts, including on the investigations.

She stressed that under international law, law enforcement may only use lethal force when strictly necessary to protect life from an imminent threat.

High Commissioner Türk also renewed his call for calm, restraint, and full respect for the rights to freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly.

“It is essential that legitimate grievances at the root of these protests are addressed,” Shamdasani said.

Plateau Governor Commissions Additional Agro-Rangers To Protect Farmers

As part of efforts toward fostering peace and enhancing agricultural productivity, the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, has commissioned an additional 150 Agro-Rangers to provide dedicated security for farmers and their produce across the state.
The initiative is a strategic intervention aimed at ensuring food security and ultimately achieving food sovereignty in Nigeria.
Governor Mutfwang made this known during the Passing-Out Parade (POP) of the Agro-Rangers trainees at the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Command and Staff College, Naton-Fursa, Jos East Local Government Area.
Reiterating his administration’s unwavering commitment to peace, unity, and inclusive development, Governor Mutfwang said securing the farmlands is a great step to achieving food security.
Nigerian farms are national assets that must be protected. Also, the journey of farmers to and from the farms must be safe and secure if we are to guarantee food security for our nation. I acknowledge the significance of the event in the ongoing efforts to strengthen security and peace across Plateau State and also express my appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support and to the nation’s security chiefs for their collaborative efforts in addressing the security challenges confronting the state,” the governor stated.
He specifically commended the NSCDC for its innovative Agro-Rangers initiative, describing it as a laudable strategy that complements the efforts of conventional security agencies in safeguarding rural communities and farmlands.
While our security forces continue to uphold the sovereignty and internal stability of the country, the Agro-Rangers initiative by the NSCDC is a timely and commendable response to the unique security needs of our agrarian communities,” the governor noted.
He emphasised that rural insecurity undermines national stability and economic growth, warning that a hungry population is vulnerable to manipulation. He stressed the importance of ensuring farmers can cultivate and harvest their crops without fear or threat.
Our farms are critical national assets that must not only be protected but also cultivated to attain food security and food sovereignty. These Agro-Rangers have been trained to ensure that farmers can return home safely and that the fruits of their labour are not destroyed,” he added.
The governor further revealed that security agencies, including the Agro-Rangers, recently facilitated the peaceful evacuation of thousands of stranded cattle from Bokkos Local Government Area without incident, demonstrating their commitment to maintaining peace through professionalism and dialogue.
Addressing the graduating Agro-Rangers, the governor charged them to discharge their duties with integrity, fairness, and patriotism.
What you are called to do is beyond a job; it is a noble sacrifice for your fellow citizens. Uphold justice and fairness, and remain committed to the mission of safeguarding our food systems and communities,” he said.
Earlier, the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, noted that this is the second batch of Agro-Rangers deployed in Plateau State. He affirmed the Corps’ determination to support the State Government in tackling security challenges, especially in farming communities.
We are proud to be partners in the journey toward sustainable peace and food security. The Agro-Rangers are specially trained to provide security cover for farmers, and we are committed to expanding their operations across the country,” he stated.

Meta Acquires Nearly 3% Stake in Ray-Ban Maker EssilorLuxottica -Source

Meta Platforms has acquired nearly a 3% stake in eyewear manufacturer EssilorLuxottica, a source told Reuters on Tuesday, as consumer interest in AI-powered wearables continues to grow.

Enhancing its wearable tech with AI features could help Meta draw in new users, as the company pours billions into expanding its artificial intelligence infrastructure.

EssilorLuxottica declined to comment, while Meta did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for a statement. According to Bloomberg News, which first reported the development, Meta acquired a stake valued at approximately 3 billion euros ($3.52 billion) based on current market prices and is considering increasing its holding to around 5% over time.

Last month, the tech giant partnered with Oakley to launch AI-powered smart glasses, further advancing its efforts in wearable technology following the strong sales of its Ray-Ban Meta glasses, which have sold millions of units since their 2023 debut.

The “Oakley Meta HSTN” will come equipped with a hands-free high-resolution camera, open-ear speakers, water resistance, and integrated Meta AI functionality.

Back in February, EssilorLuxottica CEO Francesco Milleri stated that the company aimed to increase its smart glasses production capacity and expressed hopes of extending its partnership with Meta to include additional brands.

Anambra State Governor Dispels Kidnapping Myths, Urges Diaspora Investment

The Governor of Anambra State, Professor Charles Soludo, has said that contrary to widespread belief, the majority of kidnappings and violent crimes in Anambra and across the South-East are perpetrated by Igbo criminals, not Fulani herdsmen.

Soludo made this assertion during a town hall meeting with Anambra indigenes in the Diaspora, held at Metro Points Hotel in New Carrollton, Maryland, United States, as part of his ongoing engagement with the diaspora community.

“Since I assumed office over three years ago, 99.99 per cent of those arrested for kidnapping and other violent crimes in Anambra are Igbos,” Soludo stated, debunking what he described as a “dangerous and misleading narrative” that external groups were responsible for the region’s security challenges.

In a video from the event circulating on social media, the governor stressed that many of the so-called “liberators” hiding in the forests are in fact Igbo youths engaged in criminal activities for personal gain, not ideological liberation.

“Let’s stop deceiving ourselves. Ask yourselves: how do these so-called liberators survive in the forests for months without local support? Who feeds them?” he asked.

“Nearly every kidnapper and armed criminal we have apprehended is Igbo. Igbos are kidnapping and killing fellow Igbos — not Fulani herdsmen. Anambra belongs to all of us. Our progress is a shared responsibility.”

Soludo, who has been in the U.S. since Sunday, used the event to present a comprehensive report of his administration’s achievements and ongoing challenges. He was accompanied by his Chief of Staff, Ernest Ezeajughi, and highlighted key milestones in infrastructure, education reform, healthcare, youth empowerment, and security.

He also called on diaspora indigenes to embrace the “Think Home” philosophy by investing in their homeland and contributing their expertise and resources to its development.

Nigeria’s Chargé d’Affaires in Washington, D.C., Ambassador Samson Itegboje, was also in attendance. He underscored the vital role of diaspora engagement in national growth and encouraged more proactive involvement in the country’s affairs.

A lively question-and-answer session concluded the town hall, with attendees expressing enthusiasm for Soludo’s governance style. One participant praised him as “the most transparent and development-focused governor we’ve had,” emphasizing the importance of his candid and sometimes uncomfortable truths.

Musk’s Grok Chatbot Deletes Posts Following Antisemitism Complaints

Grok, the chatbot created by Elon Musk’s AI company xAI, took down what it described as “inappropriate” social media posts on Tuesday following complaints from X users and the Anti-Defamation League. The posts reportedly included antisemitic tropes and praise for Adolf Hitler.

Concerns over political bias, hate speech, and the reliability of AI chatbots have persisted since the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in 2022.

We are aware of recent posts made by Grok and are actively working to remove the inappropriate posts,” Grok posted on X.

“Since being made aware of the content, xAI has taken action to ban hate speech before Grok posts on X. xAI is training only truth-seeking and thanks to the millions of users on X, we are able to quickly identify and update the model where training could be improved.”

ADL, the non-profit organization formed to combat antisemitism, urged Grok and other producers of Large Language Model software that produces human-sounding text to avoid “producing content rooted in antisemitic and extremist hate.”

“The content being generated by Grok LLM is irresponsible, dangerous, and clearly antisemitic. This kind of amplification of extremist rhetoric only fuels and legitimizes the growing antisemitism on X and other platforms,” the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) stated on X.

In May, after users flagged instances where Grok referenced “white genocide” in South Africa during unrelated conversations, xAI attributed the responses to an unauthorized modification in Grok’s response software.

Musk last month promised an upgrade to Grok, suggesting there was, “far too much garbage in any foundation model trained on uncorrected data.”

On Tuesday, Grok suggested Hitler would be best-placed to combat anti-white hatred, saying he would “spot the pattern and handle it decisively.”

Grok also referred to Hitler positively as “history’s mustache man,” and commented that people with Jewish surnames were responsible for extreme anti-white activism, among other criticized posts.

Grok at one point acknowledged it made a “slip-up” by engaging with comments posted by a fake account with a common Jewish surname. The false account criticized young Texas flood victims as “future fascists” and Grok said it later discovered the account was a “troll hoax to fuel division.”

According to the News Men, although many of these devices come equipped with built-in security options, a significant number of Nigerian users either neglect to activate them or are unaware of their existence.

Mr. Daniel, who is the Chief Executive Officer of MDX Computer Services, emphasized that enabling these features not only helps deter theft but also protects sensitive information from unauthorized access in cases of loss or theft.

He noted that mobile phone theft is becoming increasingly common, and maintaining consistent security awareness is key to safeguarding personal data.

“Whether your device is stolen or misplaced, activating these security measures ensures that your information remains protected and uncompromised,” he said.

He said such features could also help in tracking and recovering missing phones and devices.

Daniel also urged improvement on the inbuilt security features, adding that they should be made user friendly by being less complex to activate.

Daniel said given the importance of smartphones and other electronic gadget in daily activities such as taking, banking, building relationships they should be adequately protection.

“Phones make our lives easier; they also contain a lot sensitive information which make these devices a target for people who might want to get their hands on our data.”

“Having a device stolen can be stressful and can result in loss of valuable and vital data which can be hard to retract.

“For some criminals, their goal is to quickly reset your stolen device and resell it. Therefore it is better to activate your phone’s anti-theft protection.

“That’s why features that can automatically recognise suspicious signals and logins should be activated to protect your data on the device,” he said.

“Regardless of the specific features your phone has, it’s crucial to enable them and also set up a tracking service such as Find My Device app.”

Government Commissions Passport Office for Top Officials

The Nigeria,s Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has commissioned the newly established Passport Front Office, a specialized facility designed to facilitate timely and seamless passport processing for senior public officials and other specially designated individuals in the country.

The facility was established in response to the persistent challenges faced by senior government officials who previously experienced hitches in accessing passports.

Before now, many top-level public servants had to abandon their official duties and endure long queues at standard passport offices, It became clear that for us to serve the nation more effectively, we must also serve those tasked with its leadership more efficiently,” the Minister stated.

Commending the Nigerian Immigration Service for its professionalism and implementation expertise, Dr. Tunji-Ojo highlighted the collaboration between the Ministry and critical partners such as Iris Smart Technologies, which supplied the state-of-the-art digital infrastructure powering the new front office.

This facility sets a new benchmark for excellence and will significantly improve access, reduce waiting time, and elevate the overall passport service delivery standard,” he stated.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo emphasised that the initiative is part of a broader reform effort championed by the Ministry in 2023.
When we came in, it was shocking to realize that the Ministry of Interior and the Nigerian Immigration Service had no dedicated passport facility for public officials.

Today marks a turning point as we begin to bridge that gap and set a new course for service delivery in our nation,” the Interior Minister emphasised.

The Minister used the opportunity to intimate Nigerians of the reformation of the Renewed Hope Administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in every sector of the economy.

Newly commissioned office

Earlier in her remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani extended a warm welcome to all stakeholders, emphasising the importance of the newly commissioned office.

This is a very significant occasion,” she remarked, as the Passport Front Office serves as a dedicated, high-priority channel for the dignified and efficient processing of passport applications for key public officials whose mobility is crucial to national service.

The commissioning was marked with a symbolic unveiling of the facility and a tour led by the Minister of Interior.

Nigeria Unveils New Doctrine, Centre to Boost Military Collaboration

Nigeria has launched the Joint Doctrine and Welfare Centre, a strategic initiative designed to enhance military knowledge, collaboration, and innovation across the Armed Forces.

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, made this known during the commissioning of the Armed Forces of Nigeria Joint Doctrine and Welfare Centre in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

NSA said that “this would serve as a hub for knowledge sharing, as well as research and development.”

According to him, common learning is more important, as he encouraged the services to adopt the idea and concept of practising jointness.

This is based on the fact that developments in modern welfare have shown that jointness is the way forward. Let us harness the potential of this centre to drive progress to combat complex challenges and shape the future of our armed forces. As we move forward, we hope that this centre will meet the expectations of our national aspirations, drive innovation and make a positive impact on our desire to advance our military in line with the renewed hope agenda of this administration,” he said.

He stated thus: “The fact that, maybe for the first time, all the security agencies are one, they work together, they plan together, and they execute together.”

He noted that this group of leaders of today in the Armed Forces have been very innovative; they are bringing changes and improvements, which make the country change positively.

He commended the leadership, the ministers, the Chief of Defence Staff, all the Service Chiefs, and their Teams, as well as the initiators and other stakeholders who have worked tirelessly to bring this noble idea and initiative to fruition.

The Nigerian Chief Defence Staff and the Chairman of ECOWAS, General Christopher Musa, says the Centre would serve as a hub from which their collective military intellect would converge, where they would develop, refine, and codify the doctrines that would guide their joint operations.

Cohesive unit

According to him, they would analyse emerging threats, experiment with innovative tactics, and prepare the forces to operate as one cohesive unit, regardless of their service affiliations.

The Joint Doctrine and Warfare Centre will foster an environment of continuous learning, critical thinking, and inter-service dialogue. It will be the place where we break down the problem, where we ground forces, understand the intricacies of naval power, where airmen appreciate the challenges of special operations, and where all branches learn to liberate each other’s strengths to achieve overwhelming superiority,” he said.

We also intend to converse and bring closer all other security agencies so that we can see how we can make things fight better. Everybody is giving their support, bringing their role to play in the fight against insurgency and other threats to Nigeria as a nation. So it is not only a military thing, it is a Nigerian thing, and we want all Nigerians to take ownership of this,” he explained.

He noted that this is a new chapter in their military history where unity of effort, shared understanding, and doctrinal clarity would be their guiding principles.

He said that “this achievement represents the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and vision. In fact, at a certain time, it looked as if it was going to be impossible, but we remained focused. And with the contribution and collaboration of everyone today, we are having this thing.

He stressed that everything about doctrine is how they fight, how they operate together as a team, as it used to be individual Army, Air Force, Navy, now they’re connecting everybody and because they all have different approaches.

This centre will now give us that diversity for us to strategise. We get our strategy as the Nigerian Armed Forces Doctrine for all the armed forces so that when we go out, everybody knows the role we’re going to play, everybody knows what to do, and we don’t leave anybody in doubt,” he said.

According to him, now what they want to do again is to extend it further to other security agencies because fragility and asymmetry are not like conventional warfare.

Conventional warfare is country to country and maybe only the Armed Forces, but now you need the Armed Forces, you need the judiciary, you need everybody to play, even the health, the medical system, everybody together so they too know the roles we play,” he explained.

The Chief of Defence Operations, Major General Emeka Onumajuru, said the establishment of the Joint Doctrine and Warfare Centre is one of the needs to consolidate jointness in the outposts of Nigeria and to address inherent challenges in some joint operational areas.

According to him, these are challenges that require an integrated defence doctrine and supporting structures.

It is this gap that the Joint Doctrine and Warfare Centre seeks to fill,” he said.

He noted that this is also in line with the Chief of Defence Staff and Service Chiefs’ leadership concepts, which speak to operating in a joint environment.

He noted that today marks a significant milestone in our nation’s military history, particularly in the development of joint warfare and joint military capabilities.

He added that the centre is designed to serve as a central point for the development, harmonisation and review of joint doctrines for the outposts of Nigeria, guiding operations across all domains of warfare while fostering interoperability among the services.
