AU criticises Tunisia over hate speech against migrants

0

The African Union (AU) has criticised Tunisia and urged it to avoid “racialized hate speech” after President Kais Saied ordered the expulsion of undocumented migrants and said immigration was a plot aimed at changing his country’s demographic make-up.

Tunisia’s Foreign Ministry said it was surprised by the AU statement issued late on Friday, and rejected what it called “baseless accusations” that it said misunderstood the government’s position.

The AU voiced what it said was “deep shock and concern at the form and substance of the statement” issued by Tunisian authorities and reminded Tunisia of its obligation within the 55-member state AU to treat migrants with dignity.

Saied this week ordered security forces to stop all illegal migration and expel all undocumented migrants, prompting a campaign of arrests that caused widespread fear among sub-Saharan Africans as well as Black Tunisians.

Announcing the measures, he said increased undocumented immigration from sub-Saharan Africa was a conspiracy aimed at changing Tunisia’s demographic make-up and stopping it from being an Arab and Muslim country.

His comments were praised by the French far-right politician Eric Zemmour.

In response to criticism from rights groups that his remarks were racist, Saied said he was not racist and that migrants living in Tunisia legally had nothing to fear.

“You don’t have to post election results without checking the source and the best way and most authentic is to hear from INEC.The media houses should abide by the National Broadcasting Commission’s regulations regarding  the announcement of  election results .

Tyson Tutors Joshua On Extra Skills

0

Former American boxer, Mike Tyson  offers some advice for Anthony Joshua ahead of his return to the ring at the 02 Arena in London on April 1.

Joshua will take on Jermaine Franklin as he looks to rebuild his career following back to back losses to Ukrainian heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.

In an interview with ID Boxing, Tyson was full of praise for Joshua, and implored him to be as active as possible to become the best again.

“He has a lot of talent, and shouldn’t get discouraged. He only loses when he quits. When you quit, all the doors of opportunities close.

“Don’t get discouraged when you lose. You just made 30 million dollars! Don’t internalise it. The more you lay off, the worse you get. To be the best, you have to fight constantly and do it more and more,” Tyson said.

The Franklin fight is seen as make or break for the career of Joshua, with many pundits of the belief that defeat would spell the end to any aspirations of becoming a three-time heavyweight world champion.

It will be the British-Nigerian’s first outing under new trainer Derrick James, and many fans are hopeful the fresh link up could bring a return of the hunger that brought Joshua so much success in his earlier career.

A familiar face to UK fans after his impressive showing against Dillian Whyte last November, Franklin has always maintained he was hard done by that night and will have all the confidence of pulling off an upset at the 02 on April 1st.

A big stadium rematch for Joshua against old foe Whyte looks set for the summer, provided he gets past the American.

Russia Halts Pipeline Oil To Poland

0

Russia has halted supplies of oil to Poland via the Druzhba pipeline, PKN Orlen’s (PKN.WA) CEO said on Saturday, adding that the Polish refiner would tap other sources to plug the gap.

The halt in supplies via the pipeline – which has been exempted from European Union sanctions imposed on Russia following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine – came a day after Poland delivered its first Leopard tanks to Ukraine.

“Russia has halted supplies to Poland, for which we are prepared. Only 10% of crude oil has been coming from Russia and we will replace it with oil from other sources,” PKN Orlen Chief Executive Daniel Obajtek wrote on Twitter.

Orlen said it could fully supply its refineries via sea and that the halt in pipeline supplies would not impact deliveries of gasoline and diesel to its customers.

As of February, after a contract with Russia’s Rosneft expired, Orlen has been getting oil under a deal with Russian oil and natural gas company Tatneft.

Tatneft and Russian oil pipeline monopoly Transneft did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Oil transport to the Czech Republic, where Orlen operates two refineries, via the southern branch of the Druzhba pipeline was running to plan, pipeline operator Mero said on Saturday.

The supply halt came after U.S. President Joe Biden visited Warsaw and Kyiv in a show of support for Ukraine a year after the invasion. And on Friday, the European Union agreed on a 10th package of sanctions on Russia.

Following the invasion of Ukraine and before the EU embargoed seaborne supplies from Russia, Orlen stopped buying Russian oil and fuels transported by sea.

It said its supply portfolio now includes oil from Western Africa, the Mediterranean, the Gulf and the Gulf of Mexico. It also has a supply contract with Saudi Aramco as of 2022.

Seaborne supplies reach Poland via Naftoport, an oil terminal in Gdansk on the Baltic Sea. It can receive 36 million tonnes of oil annually topping volumes that can be processed by Polish refineries and is in part used to supply oil to refineries in eastern Germany that are linked to Druzhba.

“Given the capacity of Naftoport and the fact that we also have other routes to import motor fuels, clients will not feel any impact, while Orlen has been prepared for this for months,” Mateusz Berger, Poland’s Secretary of State in charge of strategic energy infrastructure told reporters by telephone.
