Foundation promotes peace building through tree planting in Kaduna

A non-governmental organisation, AID Foundation, says it has concluded plans to plants one millions trees in 34 communities of Kaduna metropolis, in order to promote peace building in the state.

The Executive Director of the organisation, Mr Emmanuel Bonnet, made the disclosure during an update meeting with traditional rulers in Kaduna.

He explained that the project, code-named “Green Peace” would engage 100,000 people across the two major religions in the state with the aim of fostering unity among them.

According to him, the project would also mitigate climate change, promote sanitation and hygiene, and discourage open defecation.

“A good number of youths from predominantly Muslim community would go and plant trees in a predominantly Christian community and vice versa.

“The youths will also clean up the environment of the host communities, exchange phone numbers and ask fellow youths to help water and nurture the trees. If I plant a tree in front of your house, I will ask you to help water and nurture it,” he said.

He said the tree planting would start as soon as the rains began, adding that traditional and religious leaders would sensitise their communities on the importance of project.

He added that celebrities from the Hausa movie industry, Kannywood, as well as the media would be engaged in sensitizing and mobilising youth for the Green Peace project.

While speaking, Mr Kashim Usman, head, planning unit, Kaduna Facility Management Agency (KADFAMA), said that the traditional leaders were in charge of ensuring the implementation of the project.

He said, that traditional rulers who were opinion leaders are closer to the people as such would be engaged throughout the programme.

Meanwhile, the traditional rulers present at the meeting declared their support for the initiative and promised their unwavering support towards its success.

Alhaji Bala Muhammad-Tijjani, the district head of Doka, said planting trees would improve the eco balance in semi urban and urban areas.

“It will not be difficult for us to mobilise people for the tree planting, we will be able to get our people to do it,” he said.

Collation of results on-ongoing in Edo State

Collation of results of the presidential and National Assembly elections that was held in Edo State, Southern Nigeria, is on going at the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC office in Benin city the capital of Edo State Southern Nigeria.

It would be recalled that INEC said it is waiting for results sheets of the Presidential and National Assembly elections that was held across the 18 Local Government Areas of the state on Friday, February 25.

Meanwhile, some foreign observers are on ground and lots of Journalists waiting to capture the results from the local government areas.

The delay in the collation was due to an heavy down which lasted for close to an hour, yesterday which made voting to last longer, as some polling units voted till about 6pm.

The administrative secretary of INEC, Mrs Bassey Enang said just a few local governments where needed to bring in their results for voting to start.

Today’s election complemented the relatively peaceful voting which took place on the first day of the election, the 25th of February, except for the two local governments where there was violence in form of ballot snatching and destruction of INEC materials.

Perform Civic Duties

In Agbado Primary School, Oreado Local government, people came out in large numbers to perform their civic duties.

However, some lamented late arrival of voting materials, while ward 2 was found empty, due to the fact that electorates who were redistributed to the area didn’t show up.

It is no news that the decentralisation of voters to new polling units displaced some of the voters who couldn’t persevere to search for the polling units they have been redistributed to.

There was violence in ward 4, Idia College and Ozolua model college polling units in the state.

No heavy security 

Generally, people conducted themselves well during the election even while there were no heavy security presence in most of the polling units monitored.

However, no INEC official was present at Omusi Primary School, ward 7 as at 10:30 in the state.

There weren’t road blocks by security agency in the state, despite the 7,000 police officers deployed to the state to enhance peace and security.

2023 Election: Voting Continues in Bayelsa State

Voting continue today in ward 4 &6 where election could not hold yesterday. According to INEC Voters Education & Publicity Officer, Wilfred Ifugar, materials meant for the words got mixed up. According to him, as they tried to sort it, voters were agitated and stared to protest. Eventually, election did not hold in the word.

Thankfully, accreditation has stated at about 10am this morning and things are expected to smoothly.

Heavy security presence is noticed around to forestall any eventuality.

ICPC Arrests 9 for Alleged Vote Buying in Ondo, Osun

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, has arrested 9 Persons for vote buying in Osun and Ondo states, south west Nigeria.

The Commission also arrested offenders in Borno, Akwa Ibom, and Sokoto states.

The ICPC shared on its Twitter handle that the culprits were intercepted during the Presidential and National Assembly Elections on Saturday.

Four vote buyers were arrested by the Osun State Office of the ICPC, two persons were arrested by the Sokoto State Office while one person each was arrested by the Ondo, Akwa Ibom and Borno Offices of the anti-graft agency,” the commission tweeted.

 

The four vote buyers arrested in Osun State are Adewale Teslim, 32 years; Yemi Adebiyi, 42 years; Shake Idris, 36 years, and Emiola Joseph Oluwole, 69 years. The suspects, who are in Osun State Office custody, were found with documents containing lists of names, phone numbers and account details of voters during the election in the State,” it added.

 

 

Voting in Bayelsa State conducted amidst mixed sentiments

The Presidential and National Assembly elections here in Bayelsa State, Southern Nigeria were carried out with mixed sentiments.

While voting went smoothly in many parts of the Eight Local Government Areas of the state, some other wards encountered difficulties.

At Otuoke, Ward 13 Unit 39, former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, his wife, Dr. Patience Jonathan, and his mother, also came out to perform their civic responsibilities.

Although INEC officials and materials arrived late, accreditation and voting at the wards in Otuoke went on smoothly.

After voting, the former President addressed Journalist saying that he wished Nigeria to conduct peaceful elections. He advised politicians to shun violence and unethical ways of winning elections and compared politicians who win elections through violence, rigging or vote buying, to armed robbers and con men.

He encouraged politicians to support INEC officers to ensure successful elections.

For us who are politicians, our conducts matter a lot because the whole world is watching us and want us to succeed. Politicians should know that we all own this country and I have told them that nobody’s ambitions are worth the blood of any Nigerian, he said.

Dr. Jonathan commended INEC for deploying the BIVAS technology and said that it’s an improvement on the previous card readers.

The former Nigerian President then encouraged the winners and those who will not win to accept the results in good faith.

Elsewhere at Opome town in Ogbia Federal Constituency, many were unable to cast their votes due to technical hitches from the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System BVAS machine.

The INEC officer at the unit who identified himself as Simon Innocent explained that logging into the BVAS machines experienced some set back.

He said: “By the time we wanted to start the election process and we wanted to log into the BIVAS machine, the passwords were incorrect. We went back to complain but by the time we came back, it was unit eight (8) information that was showing instead of the unit seven (7) where we are here’’, the INEC Polling Officer-2 said.

He further stated that when eventually he was able to log into the machine, there were information of some numbers of voters in it.

The machine showed numbers of accredited voters to be zero but numbers of vote to be One Hundred and four. I’m not aware who changed the BIVAS, Simon Innocent explained.

Meanwhile, at ward 10, unit 4, Amasoma In Southern ijaw LGA, Mr. Amain E complained about the late arrival of the materials to his community.

Mr. Amain also stated that when the materials arrived at about 12 noon, the presidential ballots were absent.

He said only the House of Reps and Senate ballots were brought to his unit and this resulted to a bit of a fracas with the electoral officers on ground.

“The Presidential papers eventually arrived the ward around 4:30pm but we did not start voting in our various units till around after 6.”

For Mr. Odede Whyte, his only complaint was that when he arrived at his polling unit 008, but could not find his name because he had been reallocated to unit 053 at Old commissioner quarter, Opolo Epie community.

Meanwhile, in Yenagoa, the capital of the State, the story was different.

After waiting for long at their polling units for the process to begin, many citizens marched to the INEC office in Yenagoa to express their dissatisfaction with the delay.

The eager voters appealed to INEC to make available the materials needed so they could exercise their franchise.

However, the police, after trying without success to disperse the crowd, began shooting into the air, scaring them into running for safety.

Despite these developments across the state, electoral officers gathered in Opolo community, Yenagoa LGA for the sorting and counting of the votes at about 7:30pm.

While other polling units and wards in Bayelsa State are sorting and counting their votes, four (4) wards in Yenagoa have been scheduled to conduct their own election on the 26th of February, 2023 from 10am to 4pm.

A circular signed by the head of INEC voter education in the state, Wilfred Ifogah, explained that the rescheduling of the election process for Epie 1 and 3 as well as Gbarain 2 and Okordia became necessary after the process in the above mentioned wards were disrupted.

Sorting, Collation Continues In Kano State

Sorting and collation of votes continued in some parts of Kano State on Sunday, February 26th, in Northern Nigeria.

This is in continuation of Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections held across the country.

The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC in Kano hinted that the collation centre will be opened for the collation of results from the 44 local government areas of the State by 2 pm local time.

Voice of Nigeria reports that sorting and collation are still ongoing in Doguwa, Tudunwada , Ajingi and Albasu local government areas are still voting for their candidates to represent them at the green chamber and the Nigerian Senate.

Also, the Kano South Senatorial zone witnessed the late arrival of election materials on Saturday due to the distance of the local government from the state INEC headquarters.

While Voter apathy was expected a huge number of residents of Kano municipal were observed exercising their civic responsibilities as the election went on Saturday.

Also, commercial activities have fully returned to the city with the residents peacefully going about their businesses.

2023: Cashless Policy strengthens electoral process – Bauchi Voters

Voters in Bauchi State, North East Nigeria, have hinted that the Central Bank of Nigeria’s cashless policy has helped to strengthen the electoral process across the country.

Speaking to Voice of Nigeria after casting their votes in some selected polling units monitored in the Bauchi local government Area, some of the electorates said the process was peaceful because most of the politicians don’t have access to cash to recruit thugs to distract the process.

Voice of Nigeria also observed that the peaceful atmosphere experienced during the elections was extended to all the twenty local government Areas of the State.

They also hailed the use of the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System, BVAS, as contained in the 2022 electoral Act which they said made the process easy and fast.

Meanwhile, the Presidential and National Assembly elections have ended and the counting of votes is ongoing at the various collation centres across all the twenty local government areas of bauchi State.

While the results of the winners of the National Assembly will be declared at the various State level, the presidential results will be transmitted to the National Collation Centre in Abuja, Nigeria to be reconciled by the INEC Chairman.

Maiduguri market inferno: Governor Zulum announces N1bn emergency relief fund

Following an outbreak of a major fire incident which has largely razed down the Maiduguri Monday Market, Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum has in a quick statewide broadcast, announced an emergency relief of one billion nairas to provide urgent support to victims, pending assessment of the incident.

The Governor’s spokesman, Malam Isa Gusau, in a statement on Sunday said Zulum made a broadcast soon after he had visited the scene of the incident and had mobilized armed forces to secure the area to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

The Governor who described the incident as sad and unfortunate called for calm.

“This is very unfortunate but we believe that this is decreed by Allah. I feel deeply pained by this incident and I know how painful it is for anyone to work hard over years to build his or her business but end up losing that investment in seconds. I really feel the pain of everyone affected by this incident. I commiserate with all of you. I kindly and most respectfully urge you to be calm and patient.

The Governor who empathised with the people of the State stated that the Borno State Government is already taking measures to ameliorate the situation.

“I have approved the release of one billion naira as emergency relief for us to quickly support victims of the disaster because we know that some of them may even have difficulty of surviving the next few days. Many rely on daily businesses in order to cater for themselves.”

“We are setting up an assessment committee that will comprise respectable individuals from our society including representatives of the victims, for us to speedily assess damages, and take a comprehensive list of those affected and their loses. I will also be holding meeting with leadership of the market and representatives of victims”.

“I am going to see Mr President and seek for presidential intervention on how to get support for victims. We will also reach out to other humanitarian establishments to seek help. We will be taking firm measures towards preventing reoccurrence of this fire disaster that has occurred in previous years,” he explained.

The Governor cautioned against politicizing the situation adding that “I recognize that the incident is happening at a political time, but we all know the Monday market has unfortunately faced fire disaster in previous times and this is sad. We have to find ways of ensuring this unfortunate fire disaster does not happen again and we will work together to ensure this.”

Voice of Nigeria reports that the fire outbreak in Maiduguri Market, popularly know as Monday Market started around 2am and many shops were set ablaze. Security personnel and fire fighters are already on ground to contain the fire and prevent looting.

Kogi: Collation of election results begins in Lokoja

The collation of election results is about to start in Lokoja, the Kogi state capital.

Meanwhile, the election continues today in nine polling units of the Ajaokuta Local government area of the state.

The election could not hold in those areas because of violence and the non-arrival of some sensitive materials.

Shell lauds government’s proposed construction of Oloibiri Museum

The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC JV), has expressed delight at the planned construction of the Olobiri Museum and Research Centre in Otuabagi, Ogbia Local Council of Bayelsa State.

The Olobiri Museum and Research Centre is being developed as a collaboration among the Petroleum Technology Development Fund, PTDF; the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, NCDMB; Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria, SPDC and the Bayelsa State Government.

Speaking on the development, the Managing Director of SPDC, Osagie Okunbor, who described the project as history in the making, expressed optimism that the Centre when completed would foster research and development of technologies for the nation’s energy industry.

Okunbor, speaking on behalf of the SPDC JV, recalled that Oloibiri is the first place where crude oil was found in commercial quantity, which launched Nigeria into the comity of oil-producing countries.

He urged the people of Oloibiri clan to own, protect and take pride in the historical and future relevance of the facility, while also taking advantage of the many opportunities it will offer.

“This is history in the making and the SPDC Joint Venture is proud to be associated with it. Indeed, the energy story of Nigeria has come home!  It was here in 1958 that Shell opened the first pages of the history of energy in Nigeria.

“The first commercial find of hydrocarbons was here in Oloibiri and the subsequent first export of oil which launched Nigeria into the league of oil producers was also from here. ..”

“The SPDC JV, therefore, commends the effort of the Federal Executive Council in the step-by-step approach that has culminated in the approval for construction and the contract award to develop the Oloibiri Museum and Research Centre.

“There is no doubt in my mind that, when concluded, this museum and research centre will be a one-stop shop in the heart of the Niger Delta for the development of technologies for the energy of today and the energy of tomorrow. I expect that the centre will grow to collaborate with relevant academic institutions in the Niger Delta and beyond, to further the much-needed handshake between the energy industry in Nigeria and the academia.” Okunbor said.

Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary of NCDMB, Engr. Simbi Wabote has said that the centre would correct a historical oversight that lasted for several decades during which time the people of Bayelsa State complained that they had nothing to show for being the birthplace of oil and gas production in Nigeria.

“Mr President approved the establishment of the Oloibiri Museum and Research Center as part of his signature programmes that would leave behind enduring legacies and impact the Oil and Gas Community, the people of the Niger Delta, and indeed the entire country,” he stated.
