Google loses $100bn

Google has announced a slew of features powered by Artificial Intelligence, but a mistake in an advert caused its share price to tank.

Shares of Alphabet, Google parent’s company nose-dived by nearly eight percent after new artificial intelligence chatbot Bard gave inaccurate information as reported following a Twitter advertisement for the service, which generates answers for user queries and is debuting to a limited group of testers before a wider release, causing the company to instantly lose $100 billion in market value.

The search engine giant is rushing into the space after the bot ChatGPT caught the imagination of web users around the world with its ability to generate essays, speeches and even exam papers in seconds.

Microsoft has announced a multimillion-dollar partnership with ChatGPT maker OpenAI and unveiled new products while Google tried to steal the march a day earlier by announcing its “Bard” alternative.

The bots are quickly being integrated into search engines and Google is battling to preserve its two-decade dominance of the web search industry.

But astronomers on Twitter quickly noticed that Google’s Bard had given out an error in an advert on Twitter touting its new technology.

In the advert, the bot was asked about what to tell a nine-year-old about discoveries from the James Webb Space Telescope.

It incorrectly offered the response that the telescope was the first to take pictures of a planet outside Earth’s solar system when that honor actually belongs to the European Very Large Telescope.

The mess-up sent the share price spiraling down by more than seven percent on Wednesday with investors also underwhelmed by the latest announcements.

Before the problem emerged, Google Vice President Prabhakar Raghavan told an event in Paris that Bard was now being used by “trusted testers” but did not give a timeline for a public release, which is expected within weeks.

Napoli Rule Out Osimhen Sale

0

Napoli president, Aurelio de Laurentiis, has insisted that Nigeria international Victor Osimhen is not for sale despite reports linking the striker with a move away from the club in the summer.

Laurentiis made this assertion while giving an update on the future of the prolific striker amid reports that Manchester United are preparing a mega-money swoop for his talismanic frontman and the statement of the Italian club’s boss wont be encouraging for Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag is understood to be torn between signing Osimhen or Harry Kane at the end of the season, when he intends to add a new marquee No.9 to his ranks.

But his hand could now end up being forced by the hard-nosed De Laurentiis, who wants to continue building for the future as Napoli close in on the Serie A title.

When quizzed on Manchester United’s interest in Osimhen, the Italian told Bild, “I can tell you that Osimhen is not for sale.

“Our players are in demand but I don’t have to sell anyone. We don’t have any debts.”

Osimhen’s current deal is due to run until the summer of 2025, meaning Napoli hold all the cards should they receive any bids for this season’s impending Capocannoniere winner.
The former Lille attacker currently tops the goalscoring charts in Italy having struck 16 times in 17 outings for the Partenopei.

United could be forced to explore alternative striker targets after being told under no uncertain terms that Osimhen is not for sale this summer.

Chelsea are also said to be tracking the Nigerian but ultimately, there is every chance he will remain at Napoli where he is playing the best football of his career.

BOI, AFD Collaborate To Combat Climate Change In Nigeria

0

The Bank of Industry (BOI) and the French Development Agency (AFD), have signed a grant agreement of 2.5 million Euros, delegated by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to enhance their partnership to fight climate change in Nigeria.

The Project Manager at AFD, Ms. Aïssatou Kumagangue made this known in a statement made available to the media on Thursday, in Abuja.

The statement stated that Xavier Muron, Country Director of AFD, Nigeria, and Olukayode Pitan, Managing Director (MD) of BOI, met under the patronage of Emmanuelle Blatmann, Ambassador of France in Nigeria and ECOWAS to fight climate change in Nigeria.

According to the statement, because France committed more than 1.5 billion Euros to the Green Climate Fund since 2019, it was only natural that the meeting was held at the French Embassy.

Expansion of green finance

It stated that on August 23, 2022, BOI and AFD signed a 100-million-Euro credit-line for the expansion of green finance in Nigeria.

This was approved under AFD’s Transforming Financial Systems for Climate (TFSC) Programme with the Green Climate Fund (GCF), a US$ 650 million-Programme developed in 17 countries for 100% climate investment projects.

The TFSC Programme focuses on financing investments that contribute to climate change mitigation, specifically projects focused on renewable energy, low carbon and efficient energy generation, climate smart agriculture technologies, clean urban transportation and others.

BOI and AFD have a better understanding of the importance of mainstreaming Climate Finance within BOI’s strategy and operations.

Technical assistance

Therefore, the grant agreement sets up a technical assistance scheme for BOI.
The objective is to build the capacity of BOI, thereby providing tools for effective identification and development of eligible bankable climate-related projects and improving the readiness of the bank’s customers to implement green practices in their operations.
He said the implementation of the Environment and Social Governance framework provided for in the credit agreement would be an important part of the technical assistant mandate.
Given the serious threat that climate change poses to equitable and sustainable development in Nigeria, it is critical for BOI to take the lead in mobilizing capital for green and sustainable investment.
In addition to the line of credit, the 2.5 million-Euro Technical Assistance funds will support capacity building for BOI and its customers, thereby enabling the scaling of current efforts by BOI towards climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Mr. Olukayode Pitan, MD, BOI, said it would contribute significantly to reducing Nigeria’s carbon footprint, with specific reference to Gender Equality.
He said it would also support BOI in the development and implementation of gender equality and gender lens investing policies.

State Of Emergency At Psg Ahead Of Bayern Clash

0

Having shown worrying shortcomings in all departments this year, Paris St Germain desperately need to get their act together if they want to stand a chance against Bayern Munich in their Champions League last 16 clash next week.

The Ligue 1 leaders have lost three games in 2023, the latest on Wednesday in a 2-1 defeat at bitter rivals Olympique de Marseille in the French Cup last 16 when they were overwhelmed by the Provence side’s aggressiveness throughout.

With Kylian Mbappe out injured for another two weeks, meaning he won’t play against Bayern at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday, PSG are without a match winner while Neymar was hugely disappointing against Marseille.

Only Lionel Messi up front has been up to his standards recently and that will not be enough against the Bundesliga giants.

“When they get bumped into, nobody really responds. It’s always the same thing: if they can play at their pace, there’s no problem,” former OM and PSG player Edouard Cisse told reporters  on Thursday.

“As soon as the opposing team put on the intensity, they are lost.”

In midfield, PSG were hugely dominated as only Marco Verratti has the capacity to stand his ground, and Vitinha, who has been fielded as a playmaker behind Messi and Neymar as Christophe Galtier reshuffled his team in the absence of Mbappe, has yet to show he can put his forwards in the best positions.

Bayern, instead, have been rediscovering their form, scoring eight goals in their last two Bundesliga matches – not a good omen for PSG, whose defence has often been at a loss.
Sergio Ramos might have scored the equaliser on Wednesday but his aggression does not make up for his lack of pace and poor sense of anticipation and the Spaniard often leaves Marquinhos on his own.

The Brazilian, once again, urged his team mates to rise up on Wednesday.

“We need to shut our mouths and work,” he said.

PSG’s best course of action might be to dig deep and find some pride ahead of a Ligue 1 game against Monaco on Saturday and Tuesday’s match against Bayern.

“We are disappointed and we are angry,” said keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

If talent has been lacking at PSG lately, anger might take them somewhere.

Deputy Governor believes Tinubu will end insurgency in Nigeria

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Kadri Hamzat has said that the APC Presidential candidate, Mr. Bola Tinubu will maximise the use of technology to secure the country from insurgency and banditry

He also assured that it will not be a walk in the park for the insurgents and other criminal elements who have been terrorising residents in many parts of the country, if Tinubu is elected come February 25th.

The Deputy Governor gave this assurance while speaking at a Zoom session with members of the Lagos APC Media and Publicity Committee.

He said Tinubu while serving as Lagos State Governor laid the foundation for a Command Centre which had helped in quick response to emergencies situation in the state and this according to him allowed the State to track revenue performance using technology and to also block leakages in the system.

“Lagos kicked off the use of technology in her revenue drive, other 16 states of the country have also implemented the system.

“Similarly, technology had assisted in retrieving the victory of Ondo state Governor, Olusegun Mimiko and Osun counterpart, Rauf Aregbeshola when their victory was denied at the poll. I headed the technical team and we were able to assemble 15 forensic experts who worked 16 hours daily scanning all the ballot papers.”

“The Nigerian police had only 2 finger print experts at the time the case was before the Election Petition Tribunal noting that one was also at the verge of retirement then, we relied on the use of technology while pressing the case at the Tribunal which later gave us victory,” he said

The Lagos Deputy Governor further stressed that Bola Tinubu long ago believed that to sustain the nation’s democracy, the process has to be one man one vote and Nigerians should expect nothing less, especially a technological-driven government if Tinubu is elected as President.

Innovations and Tech

Hamzat mentioned that the Rule of Law now depends on technology as judges in Lagos have also deployed a tech-driven process which has fastened the dispensation of justice in the state.

On the Light Rail project, Dr Hamzat noted that the idea was conceived during Bola Tinubu administration and it is powered by technology for safety and efficiency purposes and that the technology introduced was to detect any untoward attack on the rail.

According to him, “the light rail was conceived and gave birth to the setting up of LAMATA which was the foundation and we have sustained and built on it., we have also worked extensively on the Health sector and ICT.

“Lagos has Yaba ICT Hub, and the idea behind the Yaba Hub is to create a Broadband platform for people to make use of fast Internet for their daily activities.”

The Deputy Governor is convinced that residents of Lagos will look at the antecedents and capacity of the Presidential candidates to deliver and arrive at the choice of Tinubu on February 25th.

Earlier, the Chairman, Lagos APC PCC Media and Publicity Committee, Hon Kehinde Bamgbetan explained that the forum was to showcase the achievements of the Tinubu led government in the area of Information Communication Technology.

EFCC Appeals Court Ruling in Kogi State

Nigeria’s Anti-graft Agency the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, filed a motion before the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, asking for a stay of execution of the judgment of the Kogi State High Court in Suit No: HCL/696/2022 between Ali Bello and the Commission delivered on 12th of December, 2022 and the consequential order made on the 6th of February, 2023.

Other reliefs sought in the motion on notice, including an Order of interlocutory injunction restraining the applicants from attempting to execute or enforce the judgment of the trial Court pending the determination of the appeal.

In the supporting affidavit to the application, deposed to by Samuel Ugwuegbulam, he affirmed that the Appellants have “strong, good and arguable grounds of appeal”.

He averred that the trial court did not have jurisdiction to entertain the matter as the alleged infringement of the respondent’s fundamental human rights occurred in Abuja, and no element of it took place in Lokoja.

He said the trial court lacked jurisdiction to proceed to hear the suit, a fact which the Appellant dully raised before the court.

Ali Bello had dragged the Chairman of the EFCC, AbdulRasheed Bawa to court for arresting and detaining him illegally, with the court ruling in his favour, only for the EFCC to arraign him for alleged money laundering three days after the ruling.
