Naira re-design won’t affect 2023 general election – CBN

0

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says naira re-design won’t affect the 2023 general election, as it will provide required cash and other supports needed for smooth conduct of the poll.

Prof. Godwin Emefiele, the CBN Governor, said this when he received Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and his management team in Abuja on Tuesday.

Emefiele said that the CBN had always been supportive to INEC in whatever way possible to ensure that it delivered on its mandate of ensuring hitch-free elections.

Before now, we have been involved in the storage of INEC election materials and this involved using our armoured bullion vans to transport election materials.

“We are happy that in the course of this relationship, we have not disappointed you and that is the reason you have come again this time.

“Now, just aside from the issue of storage of election materials together with transportation of election materials from CBN locations to your own specific or designated locations, I know that just a few months ago, I visited your office.

“You raised the issue of how foreign exchange can be procured to you to import Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and other forms of election material that need to be imported and I gave you my word that foreign exchange will be provided for that purpose,” he said.

Emefiele added that CBN would provided all needed support to INEC to ensure credible general election.

“I stand here to confirm that as at today, all foreign exchange needed to import those items has been provided and those items have been imported. So, it’s all part of our commitment.

“Now this issue of paying logistics for people who are going to be transporting election materials to wards, certainly I give it to you that because we regarded the INEC project as an urgent national assignment, it cannot fail.

“The CBN will not allow itself either to be used or to be seen as an agent that frustrated positive outcome of the election.

“So I give you the commitment that if in this case, after making your electronic payment you require some money to pay transporters, in this case cash, I give to you is that we will make it available,” Emefiele said.

Hitch-Free Election
Earlier, Yakubu said that the visit was to seek for the CBN support toward a hitch-free 2023 general election, especially with the recent naira re-design policy which placed restrictions on cash withdrawal.

He said that Nigerian election was huge and complex undertaken that required engagement of critical services.

In line with the provisions of extant laws and regulations, service providers are generally paid by means of electronic transfer to their accounts.

“However, there are equally critical areas such as transportation and human support services that have to be immediately remunerated either partially or in full before services are rendered.

“In addition, emergency situations may arise requiring immediate cash payments. Some of the critical service providers are unbanked

“Over the years, we have worked with the CBN and commercial banks to pay for such services seamlessly during general elections as well as off-cycle and bye-election,” he said.

Yakubu added:“Over the years, the Commission has also migrated all its accounts at National and State levels to the CBN and this arrangement has worked without encumbrances to our activities.

“In view of the recent policy involving the redesign of some denominations of our national currency, and the limits placed on cash withdrawals, we consider this meeting important in addressing some of the areas of concern with just 17 days to the 2023 General Election.

“We are confident that arising from this meeting, we can assuage the anxiety expressed by some of our service providers.”

He said that INEC was determined to make the 2023 General Election one of the best in Nigeria, adding however, that the commission can’t do it alone.

That is why the commission is mobilising every critical national institution for the success of the election. This meeting is part of this.”

Yakubu also led the INEC management to a meeting with the National Security Adviser, retired Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno shortly after.

Naija Ratels Owner Commends Credibility Of SportsVille Award

0

The owner of Naija Ratels Football Club of Abuja, Paul Edeh, has commended the credibility of SportsVille Award saying he was pleasantly surprised and elated by his nomination as an awardee as he never saw it coming.

The Sportsville award is billed for this Saturday, February 11th at the Lagos Country Club, Ikeja. The ceremony with feature Sports Minister Sunday Dare as chairman of the day, while Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, will be the special guest of honour.

“I feel really elated by the honour bestowed on me by the organisers of the SportsVille Awards. Frankly it is an unsolicited award that came to me as a huge surprise,” Edeh said. “As a matter of fact, I have rejected awards in the past where the organisers sought for pecuniary benefits.”

“All that we have been able to achieve in sports over the years has been done with the right intentions and not in expectations for a reward or award. So when I was contacted and informed that I was to receive the SportsVille Award along with 15 others, I was surprised.”

I believe that the organisers may have noticed the series of impacts that we may have made in sports generally and women football over the years. So I count it a rare privilege to be honoured along with other prominent Nigerians who have been in the sports scene far longer than me.”

Edeh described the SportsVille Award as a very credible award saying, “I did a bit of research on the award when I was informed and found that it was an award that genuinely seeks to celebrate and honour Nigerians who have contributed to sports and in Nigeria and across the globe.

He disclosed that Ratels Sports Development Foundation (RSDF) has a lot of activities planned for 2023 which will be unveiled very soon. He said among the programmes planned include the RSDF flagship programme the Sheroes Cup which will hold sometime this year along with the Sheroes Award 2023.

“We intend to raise the bar and we hope that the impact will be felt across the country. We will also be organising more youths oriented programmes towards developing sports in spheres other than football,” Edeh added.

“We will also be unveiling a very robust partnership with the FCT Administration that will encourage youth participation in sports. These and many more initiatives are planned for this year.”

Labour Party To Introduce Special Interventions For PVCs Collection

0

Labour Party (LP) says it will introduce special interventions, not only in making sure that registered voters in the region get their PVCs ahead of the polls; but also in many other areas that would boost voter interest in the region.

The Head, Intervention Team of the Obi/Datti Presidential Campaign Council of the Labour party, Dr Ifedi Okwenna disclosed this in Awka during a special meeting with members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, led by its chairman, Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu at the Godwin Ezeemo International Press Center, NUJ Secretariat.

Okwenna said Labour Party is mobilizing to ensure that there is no voter apathy in the Southeast as feared by many. He explained that the Labour Party presidential candidate Mr Peter Obi is talented, and intelligent, with the best experience and team that will change all the key sectors of the country.

We at the LP are making every necessary effort to achieve good results at the polls. This is because, it will be wrong for other Nigerians to be lending their support to Peter Obi, while the Southeast will be found wanting, by not voting massively for the LP presidential candidate.

Nigerians need a president with capacity, character, compassion, and who has the willpower to turn things around for the better, and the answer is in Peter Obi. Obi is one person among his contemporaries that can help Nigerians take back their country, and move it forward.”

“Voting the presidential candidate of the party, Mr Peter Obi to power will help to rebuild a new Nigeria where peace and security of lives and properties will be guaranteed.

“Obi’s administration would also reposition the education sector in such a way that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will never dream of embarking on industrial action” Okwenna said.

Southeast yet to rule

The Coordinator, Diaspora Intervention for Obi/Datti presidential campaign council, Barr Franklin Nwakor, noted with regret that since the inception of the present democratic dispensation which started in 1999, the Southeast is yet to produce the number one citizen of the country; while other zones have taken their turns at different times.

By May 2023, the North where Atiku and Kwankwaso are coming from shall have produced a president for about 10 years under Musa Yar’Adua and Mohammadu Buhari, as well as vice president for 6 years under Namadi Sambo.

“Southwest where Tinubu comes from has produced a president and vice for 16 years in the last 20 years; under Olusegun Obasanjo and Yemi Osinbajo. The South-South has equally produced a president for six years, and a vice president for two years within the same period, under Goodluck Jonathan.

The Southeast remains the only zone in Southern Nigeria yet to produce a president for this country in the present democratic dispensation and, of course, since the end of the civil war in 1970,” he said.

Earlier, the Chairman NUJ Anambra, State Council, Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu thanked Dr Ifedi Okwenna and his team for considering NUJ Anambra Council as one of the first place to visit in the Southeast and assured that their message of hope shall be well spread to ensure that voter apathy is curbed.

Ogun State Governor Sues For Peace, As Protests Rocks Capital

0

Following the protests that rocked Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, over cash crunch on Tuesday, Governor Dapo Abiodun, has called on the protesters to allow peace to reign and allow the outcome of his engagement with the Bankers Forum and the Central Bank to yield positive results.

While appealing for calm, the governor said the voices of the protesters had been heard loud and clear and that the government is responding.

I call on our youths to discontinue the street protests and constructively engage the government in finding solutions.

It has become necessary to formally appeal to all concerned, having heard from many concerned Nigerians and having conducted series of meetings, along with my brother governors, with President Muhammadu Buhari and the Governor of Central Bank, Godwin Emefiele and security chiefs on the challenges, sufferings and pains being experienced over this cash scarcity and cash swap occasioned by the redesigning of our currency.

“I have also personally had to engage the controller of the Central Bank of Nigeria in Abeokuta and other bank managers to seek relief on the amounts that citizens can withdraw in exchange for deposits made in commercial banks and extracted a commitment that people would have access to their deposited funds without hitches.

“I understand the frustration and disappointments of our citizens queuing at Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), waiting to withdraw money for hours or entering banking halls only to be turned back or given so little that is not enough to meet their immediate needs”, the governor said.

He added that he does not doubt that the intention of this policy was not to unleash hardship and suffering on our teeming populace.

We will hear from the President as to what steps are being taken to bring succour and relief to Nigerians. My plea to our monarchs being the closest to the grassroots is to ensure the maintenance of peace in their domains with the support of their subjects.

“We will not be where we are in terms of socio-economic development in an atmosphere of insecurity; so we owe a lot to you and my charge to you this afternoon is that you please help us manage this situation.

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun

Governor Abiodun further said it is disheartening to see bank buildings being vandalised and people resorting to violence to register their displeasure.

We shouldn’t allow our state to descend to that level. We are a peaceful and peace-loving people and the safest state in the country. I want to use this medium to plead with our youths that when there is a problem, the solution is not to hit the streets and start protest marches; we can not solve a problem with another problem.

“Civil disobedience will rather exacerbate the anguish in the land. Let us stay away from the avoidable loss of lives and properties. Please, let us embrace peace. We are a very peaceful state; we are very orderly and we have spent a lot of time and energy investing in the peace and security of our people. We must eschew provocation that could lead to a breakdown of law and order.”

Gov. Abiodun noted that the Central Bank of Nigeria is doing its best to arrest the situation.

The All Progressives Congress governors had earlier met with President Muhammadu Buhari, pleading that the old naira notes be allowed to run as legal tender along with the redesigned currency, pending the resolution of the cash crunch crisis.

Microsoft unveils new Bing with ChatGPT powers

Microsoft has announced a new version of its search engine Bing, which incorporates the latest in artificial intelligence.

The overhaul deploys OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology, which has taken the world by storm since its launch last year.

The move is by far the most significant threat Google has seen to its dominance in web search – and marks the beginning of an AI arms race between the companies.

“The race starts today,” Microsoft boss Satya Nadella said.

Developed by San Francisco-based OpenAI, ChatGPT uses deep learning techniques to generate human-like responses to search requests.

The latest version of Bing responds to search queries with more detailed answers – not just links to websites.

Users are also able to chat with the bot to better tailor their queries. More contextual answers will be added on the right-hand side of a search page.

The new Bing search engine will be live right away – with a limited number of searches for each person.

The announcement comes a day after Google revealed details of its new chatbot, Bard.

Both companies are scrambling to get their products to market.

In a note to investors after the announcement, analyst Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities said he thought that Microsoft’s investment would “massively boost” the firm’s ability to compete.

“This is just the first step on the AI front … as AI arms race takes place among Big Tech,” he said.

Since OpenAI unveiled the ChatGPT technology on 30 November, the speed of developments has hugely accelerated.

Microsoft, an early backer of the company, last month announced it was extending its collaboration with OpenAI in a “multiyear, multibillion-dollar investment”.

Microsoft said Bing would use OpenAI technology even more advanced than the ChatGPT technology unveiled last year.

It has also announced a new premium tier of Microsoft Teams – its messaging software – that will feature ChatGPT, including a feature that automatically generates notes and highlights of meetings.

Analysts say ChatGPT – which has been used by students to pass exams and tests – has the potential to be incredibly disruptive to multiple professions, including journalism.

But it has been criticised for confidently giving wrong answers. It also works on datasets that are generally scraped from 2021 or earlier – so many of its answers can feel outdated.

Naira Scarcity: Nollywood Actress Kate Henshaw Calls Out CBN, President

Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw who is enraged by the situation of things in the country, took to her Instagram page to call out the apex bank in the country and the President of the nation.

Henshaw spoke out on the issues heralding the nation following the CBN’s new policy and the new note disbursement.

The actress believes that the CBN has been feeding people with inaccurate information about how much it deposits into smaller banks daily.

Captioning the video, Henshaw wrote, “I am beyond incensed and livid! The @centralbankng has been feeding tales and spinning yarns to Nigerians and passing the buck when they are totally complicit! What was the rush for in exchange for old notes??? If you have certain people among yourselves that you want to punish, why not face them and stop heaping hardship on us? Even with the daily limit or monthly limit, one cannot access their money. One thing is for sure, the trust in banks has been totally eroded, and @centralbankng is to blame. Such an insensitive and definitely not well-thought-out policy. After you take photos with the new notes some of which the color runs, the note is very uneven, so you decided to hide it away… Totally despicable!!”
