Scholars task Nigerians on national unity, integration

0

Scholars have called on Nigerians to be cautious against calls for the disintegration of the nation at a time the world is integrating.

“Nigeria can not be greater than Nigerians, so it is the responsibility of every citizen to put hands together to make the nation better and rise to her glorious days of being called the giant of the continent”.

These are some of the opinions of speakers at the Annual Symposium of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria, B-Zone held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, southwest Nigeria.

The Vice-Chancellor of Ahman Pategi, University, Kwara State, Professor Mahfouz Adedimeji while speaking on the topic,  ‘Saving a Nation on the Precipice: Between Re- Federation and Secessionism said the current political structure needs to be restructured, noting that to save the nation from the brink of the precipice, Nigerians must remain united.

Professor Adedimeji explained that for Nigeria to come out of secessionist agitations, there’s a need to shun economic inequality, religious bigotry, ethnic jingoism while raising cultural values and morals.

“It appears evident that leadership plays a vital role in making desirable changes happen. There is no doubt that with good leadership across board and purposive commitment to curbing ourselves of religious bigotry,  ethnic jingoism, prebendal politics,  socio-economic inequality,  and moral atrophy, Nigeria will still be dancing around the same circle”.

“But, regardless of the challenges the country may be facing, dismemberment isn’t the solution. This too shall pass”, Professor Adedimeji said.

“Nigeria shall overcome her challenges and the country shall succeed”.

The University don further stressed that there is the need to reintroduce geographical government to be represented by a premier in each zone of the country to be elected by the governors of the states.

Another scholar of the Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan, Professor Sola Olorunyomi, in his paper titled, “On all Fronts: Facing the fate of falling Giant’ said the problem facing the country is not an isolated issue, as such, citizens should rise above ethnicity to save the giant embedded in the nation.

The Chairman of the event and Speaker of the House of Representatives,  Femi Gbajabiamila , represented by a member of the house representing Ifo/Ewekoro Constituency in Ogun State, Ibrahim Isiaka called for Unity and re-orientation of national core values as a way to get out of the challenges facing the nation.

The speaker also called for a total re-orientation of national core values, as a way to carve a new agenda for  Nigeria.

The Ogun State Governor,  Dapo Abiodun,   represented by his Chief of Staff,  Shuaib Salisu lauded the Muslim students’ Society for organising the symposium at a critical time in the history of the nation.

Abiodun said that the discussion about the integration and unity of challenges facing Nigeria is everybody’s duty and not the duty of the government alone, he noted that his government will do everything within its capacity to support the Muslim Society.

The Zonal Amir of the society, Quasim Odedeji, said the theme of the symposium, “ Saving a Nation on the Precipice”,  became necessary to address the current prevailing issues of national concern.

Odedeji stressed that “We are in a very precarious situation. Insecurity has permeated all nooks and crannies of our nation. Nobody can sleep with their two eyes closed. Incessant killings, farmers-herders crisis, Kidnappings, armed robbery and banditry has become the order of the day.

“It is against this backdrop that we have selected the theme, the topics and the discussants to lead the discussion”, he said.

The Annual event has in attendance dignitaries’ from across the nation.

The Muslim Students Society of Nigeria, popularly referred to as MSS was established in 1954.

The society aimed to bring all Muslims closer and inculcate in them the true Islamic spirit of brotherhood and to have faith in Allah as the basis for the achievement of peace among mankind.

The group has produced Muslim students who are a synthesis of scholarship and morality and has contributed valuable, reliable and progressive personalities in governance, the education sector and other fields of endeavor.

Tunisia’s President indicates plans to change constitution

0

Tunisia’s President Kais Saied on indicates his preparation to change the country’s constitution. He said he would only do so using existing constitutional means, seven weeks after he seized powers in moves his foes called a coup.

The comments represented his clearest statement yet about what he intends to do next, having sworn there was “no going back” to the situation in the North African nation before his intervention on July 25. Speaking live on television in a central Tunis boulevard, Saied said he respected the 2014 democratic constitution but that it was not eternal and could be amended.

“Amendments must be made within the framework of the constitution,” he told the Sky News Arabia channel and Tunisian state television. One of Saied’s advisers told Reuters on Thursday the president was planning to suspend the constitution and offer an amended version via a referendum, prompting opposition from political parties and the powerful UGTT labour union.

Anxiety has been growing, both internally and among Western democracies that have supported Tunisia’s public finances, over Saied’s intentions since his July 25 announcement that he was sacking the prime minister and suspending parliament.

The former constitutional law professor justified those moves by citing emergency measures in the constitution that his critics and many legal scholars said did not support his intervention. Though he indefinitely extended the measures after a month, he has yet to appoint a new government or make any clear declaration of his long-term intentions, as Tunisia struggles to confront a rolling economic crisis.

Saied also said on Saturday he was close to naming a new government. Ambassadors from the Group of Seven advanced economies this week urged him to quickly do so and return to “a constitutional order, in which an elected parliament plays a significant role.”

Saied’s intervention drew widespread support after years of political paralysis, but it has thrust Tunisia into crisis a decade after it threw off autocracy and embraced democracy in the revolution that triggered the Arab Spring.

Political leaders have complained about the constitution since it was agreed in 2014, calling for it to be changed to either a more directly presidential, or a more directly parliamentary, system. Article 144 of the constitution says an amendment to the document can only be put to a referendum if it has already been approved by two-thirds of the parliament, an institution Saied last month called “a danger to the state”.

The current parliament was elected in 2019, a week after Saied was elected. He does not have the power to dissolve it and call new elections, but some of the parties in the deeply fragmented chamber have indicated they could do so themselves.

The moderate Islamist Ennahda, the biggest party in parliament with a quarter of the seats, has accused Saied of carrying out a coup and on Saturday said deviating from the constitution would mean a retreat from democracy.

The UGTT, the main labor union in Tunisia, also on Saturday signalled it opposed the idea of suspending the constitution and called instead for new parliamentary elections – a route Saied may now be considering.

FG begins training of cassava farmers in Northwest

0

The Federal Government has commenced capacity training for cassava farmers in the Northwest aimed at bridging gaps in cassava production in the area.

The training organised by Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, is to address yield gap in cassava production and expose farmers to new techniques.

In his address at the event which held in Birnin Kebbi, a director in the ministry, Karina Babangida said though Nigeria cassava yield is below 10 metric tons per hectare; it is still the leading cassava producer in the world.

Babangida, who was represented by Hakeem Raji, a deputy director, said Nigeria has the potential of producing more than 40 metric tons per hectare, if farmers adopt appropriate measures.

These, she said, include efficient technologies and improved agronomic practices and cropping systems.

“One of the key priorities of the present administration under the agricultural promotion policy is to achieve a hunger-free Nigeria through an improved agricultural sector that ensures sustainable food supply that is easily accessible and affordable.

“Giving the prime position of cassava commonly to providing food security and ensuring raw materials to many industries such as pharmaceuticals, ethanol among others, efforts should be intensified to improve productivity in order to attract more people and benefits into cassava production.

“The cassava seed system, use of smart agriculture application, seed tracker and other digital tools developed by researchers at the international institute have good potentials to improve cassava productivity.”

She explained that the workshop was to expose the farmers to the opportunities to improve their production.

“Indeed, we are all here today to deliberate on how to increase production, productivity on cassava and ensure self-sufficiency in food.

“It is in my view that sustained growth in the agriculture sector is hinged on strong collaboration between research institutions and flow of information on improved technologies, especially high yielding planting material and good agronomic practices.

“Thus, the federal ministry of agriculture and rural development will continue to support relevant activities of cassava value chain to utilise and produce improved cassava planting materials vital for increasing agricultural production,” he noted.

Advocates digital financial inclusion for smallholder farmers- AFEX

0

In a bid to improve access to more products that will boost sector’s productivity, Nigeria’s commodities exchange player, AFEX, has emphasised the need for digital financial inclusion for African smallholder farmers.

At a side-event, hosted by AFEX and Smallholder and Agri-SME Finance and Investment Network (SAFIN), themed “Digital Financial Services for Agriculture”, AFEX’s Financial Market Vice President, Oluwafunto Olasemo explained the need to integrate more digital financial solutions for smallholder farmers. “70percent of global food production comes from local farmers, and so, it is important to create digital financial services to ensure that smallholder farmers have a bountiful harvest and they live above their means,” Olasemo said.

She added, “Smallholder farmers are first customers, everything a Digital Financial Service customer needs, it must be extended to them too.”

The financial market expert said the adaptation of these products would help boost the sector’s productivity.

Also, at a separate panel session focused on upgrading agricultural value chains for improved competitiveness and inclusivity, AFEX CEO Ayodeji Balogun said the financing gap for agri-SMEs is in the “missing middle”.

Balogun said the factors hampering Africa’s rural and market potential is a mix between financing and infrastructural deficits.

“The infrastructural deficits majorly speak to the availability of adequate and affordable storage for farmers among others,” he said, adding that “limited finance also affects the value chain from a demand and supply perspective. Farmers and agribusiness are less likely to obtain financing for their operations compared to players in other sectors.”

Citing Nigeria as a case study of the financial gap in the sector, Balogun said domestic credit to the agriculture sector in the country was about 5.2% of the total credit in 2020.

“Possible reasons for the minimal allocation of credit to the sector in Nigeria may range from the high-risk nature of the sector, information asymmetric in determining the creditworthiness of the Agri-sme, and the non-suitability of conventional financing instruments,” he added.

Balogun, however, mentioned that AFEX is helping to bridge the gap, or more like providing solutions to derisk this sector by providing the necessary data and making available clearer context of the industry to potential financiers.

AFEX, known for its vision to make Africa self-reliant in food, has over 200,000 farmers and 100 agri-business registered on its Exchange and has significantly reduced the level of market fragmentation in several states of operation while creating shared prosperity for all stakeholders.

The Exchange, through its technologies, Workbench and Commix is helping track and store relevant data for players in the space to make better-informed decisions.

It has also effectively implemented a working formula that creates the avenue for farmer’s pre-production financing, Agri-business working capital financing, through innovative products listed on its Exchange.
