The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, has emphasised that Nigeria’s role in promoting peace, stability, and cooperation across West Africa remains central to the vision and activities of the Economic Community of West African States.
The Minister, who was represented by the Head of ECOWAS National Unit, Mrs Nonyelum Afoekelu, stated this during the Voice of Nigeria 2026 Forum held in Abuja, where she reiterated Nigeria’s strong commitment to fostering unity, democratic governance, and sustainable development across the region.”
She said the country has consistently served as a pillar of strength within ECOWAS, playing a leading role in peacekeeping missions, conflict mediation, and efforts to restore democratic governance.
From interventions in countries experiencing political instability to supporting electoral processes, Nigeria has shown that regional peace is closely tied to its own national interest.

Through diplomatic engagement, the deployment of peacekeeping forces, and its financial contributions, Nigeria has helped stabilise nations and prevent the escalation of conflicts.
A key element of Nigeria’s foreign policy is its emphasis on dialogue and diplomacy. The government firmly believes that inclusive dialogue, mutual respect, and understanding among stakeholders, rather than force alone, can achieve lasting peace.
By promoting negotiation and mediation, Nigeria has helped bring opposing parties together, fostering agreements that reflect the collective will of the people.

Nigeria also continues to champion democratic values across the region. By advocating for constitutional order and condemning unconstitutional changes of government, the country reinforces ECOWAS protocols on democracy and good governance.
The Minister concluded by stating that Nigeria’s enduring commitment to peace, dialogue, and regional cooperation underscores its role as a stabilising force in West Africa.
