Ethiopian rebel group forges alliance with Tigray forces

0

Ethiopia’s rebel Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) says it has agreed a military alliance with Tigrayan forces from the north of the country to fight the government.

The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has not made a statement on the pact but a spokesperson for the group confirmed the agreement to the Bloomberg news agency.

The government designated both groups as terror organisations in May.

An alliance between the OLA and Tigrayan forces could put further pressure on Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

The government has not only had to battle Tigrayan forces – it’s also facing a series of conflicts in different parts of the country.

The OLA, which is pushing for the self-determination of the Oromo people, has had limited military successes, but it’s made parts of the region very unstable.

Ethiopia’s Tigray war: PM makes nationwide call-up

Most of the internal conflicts in Ethiopia have been isolated and based on local grievances – by forming an alliance the OLA and Tigrayan forces appear to be attempting to change that.

Recently, the federal government has suffered a series of defeats in northern Ethiopia losing territory to Tigrayan fighters.

It suspended a unilateral ceasefire and called on the federal army and its allies to end the destruction caused by the TPLF once and for all.

Governor AbdulRazaq says ”the future of our society rests on the quality of young people we are able to raise.”

He therefore advised all Nigerians to offer mentorship and whatever support they can mobilise to raise a new generation of great leaders, stressing that ”this is in realisation of the fact that the brighter the future of these young people, the brighter the future of Nigeria.”

Governor AbdulRazaq made these remarks at the Peace and Youths Development Summit/TheWriteUp 2021 Grand Finale held at Kwara State University Malete.

The event, organised on Wednesday by the Torchbearers Impact Network, coincided with the commemoration of the International Youths Day.

According to him, ”this begins with offering quality basic education to give the Kwara child a fair opportunity to compete.”

“Our administration is leading the charge in this regard. We have not only recently given interest-free loan to young people to run their own businesses and be successful at it, we also provided them with mentorship from solid backgrounds,” the Governor stated.

New skills
He explained that huge investments in the innovation hub were targeted at giving new skills to young people and the target of his administration is to make Kwara the go-to place for young techies, innovators, and solution providers.

”When it is completed, it will be the largest of such facility anywhere in Nigeria,” Governor AbdulRazaq said.

The Governor also congratulated the young people on the International Youth Day, appealing to the youths to reflect on the present and the future and then make the best decisions for posterity.

“I believe strongly that the way to manage youth bulge and engender peace in our society is to create an atmosphere for young people to thrive. This is what we are trying to do in our state. From agriculture to innovation, sports and creative industry, we are steadily creating a veritable market for our young people to hone their skills, sell their ideas, and lead a fulfilling life,” he stressed.

He disclosed that this contest, which is titled TheWriteUp, will help to motivate our young people to further hone their literary skills.

Governor AbdulRazaq also commended the management and the entire KWASU community for providing the right environment for such initiative.

The Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Yakubu Salihu urged the youths to harness their energies efficiently and positively to contribute to the development of the country by assuming leadership positions in all aspects of human endeavours.

Salihu said; “What we are witnessing now is a generational change. Youths have both positive and negative impacts on this country. But I believe youths are positively contributing to the development of this country in different fields. Youth should use their numerical strength to take up leadership positions, think positively and proffer solutions to current challenges facing the country.”

Shun violence
The State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Barrister Senior Ibrahim urged Nigerian youths to shun violence, cultism, banditry and kidnapping and other forms of societal ills, to enable them realise their full potentials in life.

“What we set to achieve is to let youths know that it is time to prioritise academic excellence. Now, we have been able to identify young people across the nation who have passion and talents for writing and we will mobilise resources and support them in whatever way we can,” Abdullateef stated.

He said; “I also want to pass a message across that everyone out there is a torchbearer. You don’t need to be a member of Torchbearers Impact Network before they can be torchbearers themselves. As young people, we need to have it in mind that we are representing our communities, our schools, our states and the country wherever we are and we must try to make impact.

”On behalf of our team, I thank the Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Gbenga Hashim, KWASU authorities, the Hook Creative Agency, all the facilitators and everyone who has contributed to make this programme a success. We are truly grateful.”

Singapore to deepen economic ties with Nigeria

Singapore is set to deepen its economic ties with Nigeria and other West African countries with a pledge to increase investment in key sectors of the region.

Regional Director, West and Central Africa Enterprise of Singapore, the Asian country’s agency championing overseas business relations, Jean Ng said her country was genuinely interested in sustaining its relationship with West Africa.

Ng, said this during a meeting with some participants ahead of the Africa Singapore Business Forum 2021 holding August 23 to 24 tagged ‘Leapfrogging the World: Innovation and Sustainability in Africa’.

She said the forum was in line with Singapore Enterprise’s mandate of helping “local enterprises build capabilities and capture new opportunities across sectors and markets to be globally competitive”.

The organisation has 36 offices across the globe charged with the responsibility of working with companies of Singaporean origin to harness opportunities and build a competitive edge.

According to Ng, Singapore has grown its interest in Africa in the past years, emerging among the top 10 trading partners with the continent.

She said its investment value in the continent has also expanded by 7.6 percent in the past five years.
Singapore-Africa relations, she said, has deepened so much that people see Nigeria as centre for Africa-related businesses.

She described the forthcoming forum as a platform for cementing the relationship between the two parties, stressing that the continent has “huge growth potential”. She added that Enterprise would continue to engage Africa and Singaporean companies on mutual interests.

She listed future urbanisation, smart city development, green financing, and infrastructure development as some of the new areas Singaporean companies could leverage to support African development.

In a remark, a participant, Haresh Aswani said there was a need to build local skills and capacity to reduce importation and create jobs. He said there was much Nigeria could gain from Singaporean companies in this regard, noting that the difficult business environment as regards Nigeria is exaggerated.

There is a perception issue. But once you are there, in my opinion, it is a great country to do business with,” he said, adding that infrastructure development has a huge opportunity for partnership.

Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC Adams Oshiomole has denied plotting to stage a come back to office.

He also distanced himself from the leadership crisis rocking the ruling party.

Oshiomole, in a statement in Abuja by his media aide, Victor Oshioke, described the rumour of his chairmanship ambition as false and reaffirmed his loyalty to the party under the leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni.

The former Edo State governor dissociated himself from a statement credited to Chief Chukwuemeka Eze, an aide of a Minister from the South south, who was quoted to have said that Mr. Festus Keyamo, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, and others were plotting to bring back Oshiomhole as national chairman.

The former chairman said the statement was far from the truth, recalling the role Keyamo played in the dissolution of the Oshiomole-led National Working Committee last year.

Oshiomole said: “Our attention has been drawn to a statement credited to Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, a former National Publicity Secretary of the defunct New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP), who is now a member of the APC and self-styled aide of Minister of Transportation,  Chief Rotimi Amaechi.

”In the said statement widely reported in the media, Chief Eze was quoted as saying that Mr. Festus Keyamo (SAN),  Hon. Minister of State for Labour and Employment, and others were plotting to bring back Comrade Adams Oshiomhole as national chairman of the APC.

”Ordinarily we would have ignored this nonsensical suggestion. However, it is pertinent to set the records straight and put to rest this ridiculous falsehood being marketed by Eze Chukwuemeka Eze.”

The former chairman said he did not participate in any plot to destabilise or ridicule the party in any way or for any reason.

The Registrar of the PCN, Dr, Elijah Mohammed, made this call during a presentation at the 2021 Regional Workshop of the African Pharmaceutical Forum in Lagos.

Mohammed stressed that pharmacists will benefit from embracing information technology, as it will facilitate national development.

Technological innovations have impacted positively on the lives of millions of people, industries, and institutions, noting that the pharmacy profession has also benefited tremendously from information technology,” the PCN said.

Mohammed stated further that pharmacists should not see IT as something that will impact the profession in the coming years, adding that pharmacy and other professions are already changing as a result of technology.

Information technology is no longer a futuristic term. We see it daily, changing and disrupting different sectors and industries including health.

“It is, therefore, necessary that pharmacists in all aspects of the practice adapt fast to the new realities of improved practice through the application of these innovations,” he said.

Dr. Mohammed noted that the COVID-19 pandemic has compelled the world, including Africa to intensify technology-enabled remote management of patients, adding that a lot of progress was made in this direction despite the challenge of inadequate infrastructure in the continent.

These technological innovations include secure web-based platforms, which enable pharmacists to access patients’ information including hospital discharge information for improved care, electronic prescribing, supply, and administration of medicines, barcode medicine identification which helps in proper and easy identification of medicines to reduce error.

“Other innovations include automated dispensing which enables pharmacists to focus on more clinical rules and responsibilities, use of mobile telephones text alerts to remind patients that repeat prescriptions are ready or to offer services, telecare which involves the use of digital communication technology (audio and visual) to provide healthcare consultations and services to patients remotely at home,” he said.

Mohammed stated that the PCN, in line with global best practices, has put various technological innovations in place to improve regulatory efficiency, noting that the Council has designed a digitalised Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement tools on key PCN regulatory processes.

He stated further that the assessment tools for all areas of pharmacy practice have been digitalised, adding that some of them are already being implemented.

“This is in addition to the completed nationwide GIS mapping of pharmaceutical premises which is expected to improve quality inspection activities and facilitate decision making.

“A new and robust regulation on internet pharmacy services has been developed and the Council is collaborating with the INTERPOL to ensure regulation of the online sites,” he said.

Super Eagles legend Okocha welcomes Lionel Messi to PSG

0

Nigeria’s Super Eagles captain, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, has welcomed Paris Saint-Germain’s new attacker Lionel Messi, to Paris.

Okocha sent his welcome message via his Instagram handle to Messi, who just moved to Ligue 1 after an emotional exit from Barcelona.

Okocha, who was a former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder, earlier congratulated Messi and said he would not have returned to Nigeria if offered the Argentine superstar’s pay while playing for the club.

In 1998, French side Paris Saint-Germain spent around £14 million to sign Okocha, making him the most expensive African player at the time.

During his four-year stint with PSG, he played 84 matches and scored 12 goals.

“Welcome to Paris,” Okocha said in the caption of a photo of him and Messi on Instagram.

Messi arrived in the French capital on Tuesday before penning a two-year contract with the option of a third season.

The club also revealed on Thursday ”it had paid a signing on bonus to the player in PSG’s own virtual currency which it calls $PSG Fan Tokens, originally sold at 2 euros each and currently trading over 30 Euros each.”

“The coins are there to create a link between the fans and the club, and it’s the first time we have used them in this way,” the Parisians said in a statement without saying how many they had given to Messi.

PSG quickly emerged as the favourite to sign Messi following the shock of his departure last week from Barcelona and he arrives eyeing a fifth Champions League, with the most recent of his four victories with his old club coming in 2015.

PSG are reportedly paying 35 million euros ($41 million) a year to Messi, who will wear the number 30 jersey — with fans continuing to line up outside the club’s different shops in the capital to buy the shirt with his name and number on the back.
