FCTA continues demolition at Iddo, clears over 350 houses

0

After three weeks break, authority of the Nigerian Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Wednesday continued it’s demolition exercise at Iddo Sarki along Airport road, removing over 350 illegal buildings.

Iddo Sarki community, few kilometres away from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, is said to have been taken over by desperate investors, who are taking advantage of the  community’s proximity to University of Abuja, to build illegal hostels for students.

The Chairman, FCT Ministerial Committee on City Sanitation, Mr Ikharo Attah said the break was an understanding the administration had with some stakeholders, who pleaded  for extra time to talk with the community leaders and also enable affected people to relocate.

Attah noted that returning the bulldozers to the Community was very necessary to sustaining the tempo of the sanitation, as the level of illegalities recorded there had become very alarming.

He further explained that, FCT Minister had reiterated commitment to the ongoing exercise, as it was part of measures to save the nation’s capital from becoming an undesirable slum.

While he warned all attempts to distort the master plan will be resisted, he warned that there was no relenting on the proposed demolition of illegal structures at Mpape community.

According to him, enough time and notices have been given to affected people at Mpape, stating that  in two weeks time the bulldozers will move in there.

He added that FCTA will not pay any compensation to the victims, who contravened extant laws by building illegally. He however, advised that victims can seek for justice against the sellers of the illegal land.

The first notice we give to the people is to stop buying land from the natives, unfortunately, the chiefs have denied selling land to anybody.

“We are not going back in the demolition. After here we are moving to Mpape, Where residents have requested for the demolition.

“Anyone who buys land from the local Chiefs, is doing that in contraventions of the laws and such persons will bear the brunt. Our work is to remove illegalities.  Those who were affected can seek for justice against those that sold the illegal land”

Also speaking, Peter Olumuji, from FCTA Department of Security Services, confirmed that the ongoing sanitation and demolition exercise has reduced the rate of crime along the Airport road axis.

Olumuji said that from the statistics recorded at the department, the demolition had dislodged most of the criminals that hitherto held the residents to ransom.

He further assured that FCTA will not relent in ensuring adequate security in all the communities within Abuja.

COVID-19: Indonesia Records 100,000 Deaths

0

Indonesia has recorded 100,000 COVID-19 deaths on Wednesday, as the country struggles to control the spread of the Delta variant.

Many Indonesians are dying at home, unable to access hospital care or medical oxygen supplies as health care facilities are stretched to the limit.

More than 3.5 million infections have been recorded to date, though official figures are widely believed to be an underestimate.

COVID-19  taskforce spokeswoman Siti Nadia Tarmizi said, “The deaths happened mainly because of lateness to recognise the severity of the symptoms and to refer patients.”

Indonesia reported 1,747 new deaths on Wednesday, bringing its total to 100,636.

The country aims to vaccinate 208 million of its 270 million citizens but the vaccination rate remains far below the government’s one-million-a-day target.

Only about eight percent of the population have been fully inoculated.

Blast in Afghan capital as Taliban claim Minister’s compound attack

0

A blast near the office of Afghanistan’s main security agency wounded three people on Wednesday hours after a bomb and gun attack on a minister’s compound brought surging Taliban violence to the capital.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the late Tuesday car bomb and gun attack on the home of acting Defence Minister Bismillah Mohammadi. There was no immediate claim for the Wednesday’s blast.

Mohammadi survived the attack on his compound in a heavily fortified part of Kabul but the violence was a stark illustration of the deterioration in security as U.S.-led foreign forces complete their withdrawal and the insurgents seize swathes of territory.

Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said his group targeted the minister’s residence as an important meeting was underway there.

Government forces battled the attackers for more than four hours and Ministry of Interior said at least eight civilians were killed and 20 wounded.

The explosion on Wednesday near a facility of the National Directorate of Security wounded two civilians and a security official, police said.

The Taliban have stepped up their campaign to defeat the U.S.-backed government since April as foreign forces complete their withdrawal after 20 years of war.

Fighting has been particularly heavy around the city of Herat, near the western border with Iran, and Lashkar Gah and Kandahar in the south.

An Afghan military spokesman said an emergency had been declared in Lashkar Gah and government forces were getting reinforcements and U.S. air support.

The loss of Lashkar Gah would be a huge blow for the government, which has pledged to defend strategic centres after losing many rural districts to the Taliban in recent months.

Scores of families have fled from their homes in the small city, capital of Helmand province, as government forces launched a counterattack against the Taliban.

The United Nations reported on Tuesday that at least 40 civilians had been killed in Lashkar Gah in the previous 24 hours.

Taliban fighters had taken control of some radio and TV stations in the city and were moving into homes to stop people from helping government forces, residents said.

COVID-19: NYSC refutes “red alert” claims

0

The management of the National Youth Service Corps NYSC has refuted reports making the rounds in both the mainstream and new media alleging that NYSC camps are on red alert as 109 tested positive for COVID 19.

The rebuttal is contained in a statement signed by the Director, Press and Public Relations of the Scheme, Mrs. Adenike Adeyemi.

According to her, “Management wishes to state that the caption and body of the story are very misleading”.

“Management hereby restates that there is no COVID-19 positive Corps Member in any of the 37 NYSC Orientation Camps nationwide”.

Mrs. Adeyemi, therefore, stated that before any Prospective Corps Member is admitted into the 37 camps, they must undergo COVID-19 test and only those that tested negative are admitted, the same rule applies to camp officials. Those that tested positive are handed over to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) for treatment and management.

She clarified that it “is pertinent to state that there is a gulf of difference between a Corps Member and a Prospective Corps Member”.

According to her, “One becomes a Corps Member after admittance to the camp, registers and administered the Oath of National Allegiance”.

She noted that anyone mobilised for Service, but has not gone through the aforesaid process is not a Corps Member.

She restated that there is no red alert in NYSC Orientation Camps, as all Corps Members, as well as camp officials, admitted in the camps, are COVID-19 negative.

She, therefore, advised their partners-in-progress, members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm to kindly take note of the explanation for proper guidance in their reportage.

Lightning strikes in Bangladesh wedding party kill 16

0

Several lightning bolts have hit a wedding party in Bangladesh within a few seconds, killing at least 16 people and injuring the groom, officials say.

The group had just left a boat at the riverside town of Shibganj to take shelter from the thunderstorm when the lightning struck, a government administrator for the town said on Wednesday.

The bride was not with the wedding party, Sakib Al-Rabby told the AFP news agency, confirming that 16 people died as several bolts struck within a few seconds of each other in the western district of Chapainawabganj.

Fierce monsoon storms have battered Bangladesh this year.

A week of torrential rains in the southeastern district of Cox’s Bazar left some 20 dead, including six Rohingya refugees.

Lightning kills hundreds of people in the South Asian nation each year.

According to an official tally, there were more than 200 lightning deaths in 2016, with 82 people dying on a single day in May.

Many deaths are never officially recorded, however, and one independent monitor counted at least 349 deaths from lightning strikes.

Some experts say deforestation has increased the death toll. Bangladesh has planted hundreds of thousands of palm trees in a bid to ease the impact of climate change and reduce the number of lightning deaths.

DSS obeys court order, produces Igboho’s aides in court

0

The Department of State Services (DSS), on Wednesday, produced the 12 detained associates of Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, before a Federal High Court, Abuja in compliance with its earlier order.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu had, on July 23, ordered the security agency to bring the detainees in court following an ex-parte motion moved by counsel to the 12 applicants, Pelumi Olahengbesi, to seek for the enforcement of their fundamental rights.

Although the DSS had, on two occasions, failed to produce them in court, the security outfit today, Aug. 4, brought the 12 detainees before the court to show cause why they should note released on bail.

It would be recalled that in the last adjourned date, only eight out of the 12 suspects were brought to the court.
