Covid-19: FCTA calls on Nigerians to get vaccinated

0

The Nigerian Federal Capital Terriory Administration (FCTA) through it Health and Human Services Secretariat has advised every eligible Nigerian to take the COVID-19 vaccine to curtail further spread of the virus in the country.

Dr Mohammed Kawu, Acting Secretary of the Secretariat, Dr Mohammed Kawu, gave the advice in an interview with Journalists in Abuja Nigeria .

Kawu said that the country would not be consider safe until 70 per cent of the nation’s population was vaccinated against the COVID-19 pandemic.

He disclosed that FCT got 219,800 doses of vaccines from the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, adding that the priority was to vaccinate all the health workers in FCT.

He explained that the brand of COVID-19 vaccine currently being used in Nigeria was safe and efficacious.

“The President of this country, the Vice President and all the political leaders of this country have taken the vaccine.

If it is not safe, we are not that bad as to allow our President, Governors and other political leaders to take this vaccine.

So, you can be sure this vaccine is safe.

This vaccine is coming from a 21-year-old company, established in 1990 in Cambridge, United Kingdom.

It is not a Third World vaccine production facility as so many people are saying.

This vaccines are produced by the company which is a UK and Swedish based companies; they merged in 1990 to form the company.

So, this vaccine we are getting from a very reliable source from the first world; and UK and other European countries are taking this vaccines.

UK is presently taking this vaccines despite the hitch they got in sweden and one other country that have withheld the administration of this vaccine.

UK said, as far as they are concerned, they have not seen or heard any side effects that warrants stoppage of the vaccine.

The vaccine is as potent and as safe as required.

The problem that other countries got was some people develop trembobolism which is common in UK.

Probably is a coincidence, probably is one of the side effects, they are not sure.

So they want to investigate further with the batch that they are using and the batch is ABC 1530 and that is not the batch we are using in this country and that is not the batch UK is using, Italy too is not using it.

So, all this countries, as far as they are concerned, the one they are using they have not seen any side effects that warrants stoppage so they are ok; they are comfortable.

Let me also tell you, the moment this vaccine was produced, it has been under trial and testing.

The samples were sent to all regulatory agencies of all countries, especially (including) our NAFDAC.

NAFDAC has worked on all the Vaccines that have been produced in the world in case Nigeria wants to import them.

After importing the vaccine, before they were administered, NAFDAC had to take the samples from this batch that have been produced.

And processed and investigated the safety and all other parameters and they came out to say that this vaccine is perfect.

So far as I am concerned, as a scientist, this vaccine is good, safe and efficacious and I recommend it for myself, family and all Nigerians,” Kawu said.

Grammy Awards: APC celebrates Wizkid, Burna Boy

0

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has celebrated Nigeria’s Afrobeat stars Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun (Wizkid) and Damini Ogulu (Burna Boy) on winning awards at the 63rd 2021 Grammys held in Los Angeles.

This was contained in a statement by the party’s National Secretary Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, Sen. John James Akpanudoedehe.

The ruling party described their victories as Nigeria’s biggest moment on the world’s music stage and an affirmation of the country’s artists and the vibrant afrobeat genre as an international musical force.

Burna Boy won the Best Global Music Album category with his ‘Twice As Tall’ album while Wizkid won the Best Music Video for his song with Beyoncé; Brown Skin Girl.

“This indeed crowns efforts of Nigerian superstars such as Fela Ransome Kuti who were the main progenitors of Afrobeat/Afropop that have become mainstream music all over the world. As a party, we are immensely proud that our musical stars are leading the pack of young Africans who are redefining the global music space.

“Burna Boy and Wizkid’s Grammy awards are an inspiration to Nigerian youth as they continue to make their mark in different endeavours. Our youth are our asset. Their creativity, talent, energy, innovation, and drive is positively impacting and changing the world.” The Party said.

Delta APC Crisis: Deputy Senate President, Emerhor sue for peace

0

The Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and the Founding leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, have sued for peace and unity in the party, maintaining that it was time to end the divisions in the party in the state.

Both leaders made the declaration during a visit by Senator Ovie Omo-Agege to the founding leader of the APC in Delta State, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, at his Evwreni country-home, Ughelli North Local Government Area of the state.

Omo-Agege, who was accompanied by the member representing Ughelli North/ Ughelli South/Udu Federal Constituency, Revd Francis Waive and others, said the visit was a brotherly one, adding that it was part of the effort towards ending the rift between leaders of the party in the state.

While blaming the poor performance of the party in the 2019 general elections on the division within leaders of the APC in the state, he said;

“This is a brotherly visit. This is not the first time we are meeting. We have met severally at his residence in Abuja. Before the commencement of our revalidation exercise, I had planned to visit him to say hello. It was not just to say hello but to reiterate to him based on the discussions we have had. It’s time we bring everybody together.

“As both of us we say, Delta State is ripe for the taking. We have also said that can only happen if all of us are on the same page. Come to think of it, what are we fighting for? At the end of the day, we are brothers first before we became members of APC. Party will come and go but the Urhobo people will remain Urhobo. Delta State will remain Delta State.

“As from today, we should all know that we are one. The party is not just about Olorogun Emerhor and myself, we still have other leaders. In politics, we drag who gets what, but while doing that, we must do it with civility. We must do it with humanity. We must not play it in a way that it becomes almost impossible to reconcile yourselves at the end of the exercise.

“All we want is that Delta State is delivered to APC. Let’s reach out to other leaders of the party and those who align and support them and their aspirations. I will work with everyone to ensure that APC wins future elections in the state through unity”.

Also in his remarks, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, who was the 2015 governorship candidate of the party in the State, said the Omo-Agege’s visit to his house was historic, insisting that it was time for leaders and members of the party from across the state to embrace peace and unite in the interest of the party.

Emerhor said the only reason the opposition had not been able to wrestle power from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the state was as a result of the disunity and division among opposition leaders in the state.

He said “being the Founding leader and having contested a number of elections in the state, I know this for a fact. And this why I have continued to send out messages of unity in recent times.

“So, I believe that unity is our only winning formula against the PDP in the next election. Divided we fall, united, we stand. That is why I have continued to preach peace and I am happy that that is what Senator Omo-Agege has come to demonstrate here today, by putting aside any differences we may have had.

While affirming Omo-Agege as the undisputed leader of APC who must take the responsibility to unite the party in the state, Emerhor identified disunity, division and leadership deficits as some of the factors mitigating against the success of the party in the state.

“However, leadership comes with responsibilities and challenges. When you are king, you must bring your people together, and that is my challenge to our leader, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege. You must do more, you must not give up. You must reach out to the other leaders, Chief Great Ogboru,  Festus Keyamo and others and bring everyone together. In that quest, I will continue to support you to ensure that all the leaders of the party come together.

“The era where two leaders will gang up against others and create faction in Delta APC is over. Let it be known that I am not ganging up with the Senator, but supporting him to ensure that peace and unity reign in Delta APC”. Emerhor said.

7th Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue to hold virtually

Political leaders, private sector representatives and stakeholders from all over the world will convene on 16 and 17 March, 2021 for the 7th “Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue (BETD)” conference held virtually, the largest global event on the transition towards new and renewable energies.

Against the backdrop of growing energy demands and the need to reduce CO2 emissions to attain the goals set by 175 countries, including Nigeria, in the 2015 Paris climate agreement, experts, decision makers and civil society representatives will discuss how to switch energy production towards clean technologies and applications.

Speaking ahead of the conference, German Foreign Minister Heiko Mass said,

“As prices for renewable energies have come down significantly in the past decades, this approach is considered not only necessary to preserve our planet, but also to offer enormous economic advantages for countries that realize their potential in renewable energy production.

“The energy transition has to succeed, so that our planet has a future. Worldwide support has never been this broad-based before. With the end of the fossil age drawing near, the world will change significantly in the decades to come. This is why we need a forward-looking energy policy that fosters cooperation in order to assure a smooth transition”.

Among the participants at the conference are Fatih Birol, the head of the International Energy Agency, the new US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate and former Secretary of State John Kerry, and the President of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen.

Discussions during the two-day event will focus on issues such as how to finance energy transitions, intelligent mobility and carbon neutral cities or “greening the industry”.

A special focus will be dedicated to the “hydrogen economy”, considered by experts as one of the most promising avenues for clean energy production in the 21st century. As hydrogen can be produced from renewable (“green hydrogen”) or fossil energy sources (“blue or grey hydrogen”), it can provide a link for oil and gas producing countries to the post-fossil age.

Nigeria and Germany have cooperated through the “Nigerian-German Energy Partnership” since 2008, covering issues ranging from energy security and efficiency to renewable energies and capacity building, including vocational training.

The conference can be followed online on www.energydialogue.berlin.

WTO to support Nigeria through Technical Assistance, Training & Quality Upgrade

The Director General, World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, says Nigeria’s share in World Trade is 0.33%, while its share in Africa trade is 19%, noting that it is a small fraction of what the country can achieve.

Dr Okonjo- Iweala said this during her visit to the Minister of Industry Trade and Investment, Mr Adeniyi Adebayo at the Ministry in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

“The country must step up action on its economy as trade can be instrumental, if Nigeria can add more value to its products and improve its infrastructure to deliver trade.

“Nigeria is 103 out 167 countries in logistics and that means we have a long way to go and for me, that is a potential area we can invest to improve our logistics so we can take advantage of trade within the Africa Continental Free Trade Area”.

“We have difficulty and challenges with our economy, we have to move fast, we have potential to do so much better and trade is a very strong part of that story”.

The Director-General, however, said in world trade, Nigeria is active in the areas of agriculture and joint statement initiatives:

“Trade negotiations on agricultural issues are very important to us and we are very active there, Nigeria is a leader on issues of e-commerce, services domestic regulations, investment facilitation, micro small and medium enterprises and women in trade.

Dr Okonjo-Iweala, said that the WTO will work with Nigeria to help deliver support directly with its resources in technical assistance, training and quality upgrade, but also with other institutions in unlocking some of the bottlenecks that confront the country.

“The WTO is about supporting investments and supporting infrastructure in technical assistance; it is not a financial institution, but it works with financial institutions.

“It is one of the economic institutions that was created with the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, IMF; these are three powerful institutions that, working together, can deliver a lot,” Okonjo said.

The WTO Boss expressed hope that Nigeria will take a very active supportive role in helping her deliver on some of the mandates.

“The WTO faces many challenges and also needs its own reforms to deliver results.

“The organization has not delivered a multilateral round of negotiations in quite a number of years and we have the unique opportunity of delivering the fishery subsidy negotiations.

“The dispute settlement system that is paralyzed we have to discuss with all members including the United States on how to make this work again, because the rules-based organization cannot continue to make rules, if the dispute settlement system does not work,” Dr Okojo-Iweala added.

The Minister congratulated Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her appointment as the Director-General, WTO, while hinting on some of the country’s expectations regarding engagements in ongoing negotiations and discussions.

“On the ongoing agriculture negotiation, Nigeria expects balance and equitable outcome that addresses structural causes of food and livelihood insecurity in Net Food Importing Developing Countries NFIDC and Least Developed Countries LDC.

“On the Fishery Subsidy Negotiations, we look forward to outcomes that result in reduction in overfishing and unsustainable fishing practices with effective differential treatment that allows a sustainable development of  developing countries,” Mr Adebayo said.

The Minister of State for Industry Trade and Investment, Amb. Maryam Katagum, urged the DG WTO not forget the commitment to sustain and enhance the ongoing dialogue and action on ‘women in trade’, as a firm believer in the power of trade to lift developing countries, including Nigeria out of poverty.
