“Don’t hijack membership registration” – APC Chairman warns stakeholders

0

The chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Caretaker/Extraordinary National Convention Planning Committee, Governor Mai Mala Buni, has warned that the national leadership will deal decisively with anyone or group who attempt to hijack the party’s membership registration and revalidation process scheduled to commence on January 25, 2021

The National Chairman, APC Caretaker and Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee and Governor of Yobe state, Mai Mala Buni gave the advice when he inaugurated the National Committee for membership registration and revalidation at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

He said any act of sabotage of the process will be dealt with.

“Let me make it abundantly clear that the party would not condone any act of sabotage of denying anyone or group of persons from registering. The party would deal decisively with anyone or group who attempt hijacking the exercise. Everyone must be allowed and given the chance to register, Buni said.

Governor Buni added that the Committee, which is chaired by the Governor of Niger state Abubakar Sani Bello is key to the success of the registration and membership revalidation.

“As you are aware, the party had not had the opportunity of renewing its membership register since the initial registration exercise of 2014.  The party had in the last seven years received millions of politicians who left other political parties and joined the APC but were not registered.

“Similarly millions of youth who attained the age of 18 years and above have joined the party within this period could not be registered.  Again, others who had left the party still have their names in the register.

“The registration and revalidation exercise, therefore, provides the opportunity for both new and old members to register and update their membership in the party, and for the party to expunge names of those who had left so as to have a clean and up to date membership register.

“Therefore, this committee holds the key to ensuring a successful membership registration and revalidation exercise across the country. I wish to reiterate that so much is expected from this very important committee, Buni added.

On his part, Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger state promised that the 11-member committee will put the interest of the party ahead of any personal or group interest.

“Your Excellency, our business is to grow our party not to limit people. People make the party, party does not make people. The more the merrier, we shouldn’t get intimidated by the quality calibre and of the people joining our party because we feel that they will deprive us of some certain positions that is left in the hands of God but what is important is the success of the party at all elections and once we achieve that there will always be a room for someone.

“Your Excellency, we will take this assignment seriously we will swing into action. I thank you very much for giving me three serious party people in this committee, Bello said.

Locusts damage 50,000 hectares of cropland in Namibia

African migratory locusts (AML) have damaged at least 50 000 hectares of cropland in Namibia

The Zambezi region was the first part of the country to experience an outbreak of locusts which later affected farmers in nine of the 10 crop producing regions in Namibia February last year.

By that time a second invasion had hit the nine regions and more than 500 km2 had been attacked.

To date, the ministry’s spraying team has covered 20 000 hectares and they are planning to cover more because their surveillance area is about 300 000 hectares. The ground covered does, however, depend on the swarm clusters as the population increases.

In Kavango East and Kavango West, a total of 340 hectares have been covered of which 270 hectares are of the green schemes, mainly at Shitemo, Ndonga Linena, Uvhungu-Vhungu and Sikondo as well as 70 hectares within the community.

Furthermore, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) early last year warned that the outbreaks are threatening the food security and livelihoods of millions of people in southern Africa.

According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), about 2,3 million people in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Namibia are already facing acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3) and are likely to be seriously impacted by the locust invasion.

The AML is a trans-boundary pest capable of flying long distances and severely affecting crops, pastures as well as food security, nutrition and livelihoods.

The ministry’s spraying teams late last year had problems after neighbouring countries sprayed their fields as the locusts migrated from one country to the other and Nutrition Security Working Group (FSNWG).

Joe Biden becomes 46th President of the United States

0

Joseph Robinette Biden Jr has been sworn in as the 46th president of the United States, following his election victory over Trump last year.

His Vice, Kamala D. Harris has also been sworn in as the first female, first  black and first South-Asian Vice-President of the United states of America.

Kamala Harris is sworn as U.S. Vice President by U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor as her husband Doug Emhoff looks on at the US presidential inauguration ceremony.

The former California senator was sworn in by Sonia Sotomayor, the first Latina on the supreme court. Harris has chosen to be sworn in using two Bibles, one from the late Thurgood Marshall the first Black supreme court justice, and one from Regina Shelton, a close family friend who was something like a surrogate mother for Harris and her sister growing up.

Harris’s inauguration marks a major moment in American history. Women have run on presidential tickets as would-be vice-presidents but until Joe Biden’s win, none of those tickets were victorious.

Millions of people around the world watched from home as Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath of office to Biden on the steps outside the West Front of the US Capitol, just two weeks after they watched in horror as a mob of supporters loyal to his predecessor stormed the building in a violent last stand to overturn the results of the presidential election.

Governor Makinde warns against forceful removal of Fulani Herdsmen in Oyo

0

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has directed that individuals and groups planning to take actions that could lead to the forcible removal of Fulani herdsmen from Oyo State should desist from such actions, as defaulters would face the full wrath of the law.

Reacting to the alleged ultimatum given to Fulanis to leave the state by unauthorised individuals and groups, the Governor, in a broadcast, on Wednesday, affirmed that his administration would not sit back and watch anyone make any law-abiding resident of Oyo State feel unsafe in their homes, farms, or business places.

Makinde noted that the events of the past few weeks in the State had made it imperative for him to address issues that have to do with the internal security of the State, saying he also recently had cause to call out members of the Press, whom he said were allowing themselves to be used to stoke ethnic tensions among the people of the State.

He stated: “However, we cannot overlook the fact that there have indeed been instances that cause concern. The fragile peace between the herdsmen and farmers in Oke Ogun is being threatened. Individuals who are not authorised are going around chasing people from their homes and causing mayhem. This assault on residents of Oyo State is not the way to further the Yoruba cause.”

“The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), which I swore to defend and protect, guarantees freedom of movement in Section 41(1), such that citizens are free to reside in any part of the country without fear. We are determined to preserve that right in Oyo State,” Makinde stated.

The Governor further directed all Local Government and Local Council Development Area chairpersons to work with traditional rulers and officers of security agencies to ensure that peace is maintained in all parts of the State, while urging traditional rulers not to be part of any plans to disrupt the peaceful coexistence of residents of the State.

According to the Governor, the common enemy of the people is neither the Hausa Fulani who is looking for pasture for his flock, nor the farmer who just wants to grow food to sell in the market or to feed his family, but the hoodlums, cultists, armed robbers, kidnappers and bandits, who live among the people.

He said: “I must reiterate that we will not hesitate to take appropriate action against any individuals who try to disrupt the peace in Oyo State. Our administration is taking all necessary steps to protect the good people of Oyo State from harassment, thuggery and banditry. We believe we have the situation under control.”

“We have constitutionally empowered people who will arrest and prosecute these criminals. Our job, as active citizens, is to help them, where we can, to identify these enemies. Report any criminals and criminal activities you are privy to and let the authorities take action. If you see something, say something,” the Governor appealed.

Makinde acknowledged the efforts of some officers of the Nigeria Police Force who have resumed their constitutional duties of maintaining law and order in the State and encouraged the leadership of the Police to continue to collaborate with his administration to secure Oyo State.

He added that the collective efforts of citizens would keep the peace in the State and preserve the secure environment that has contributed to the growth of the State’s economy.
