Zimbabwe jails 3 music promoters for Covid-19 ‘superspreader event’

0

A Zimbabwean court has jailed three popular music promoters for six months each for hosting a Covid-19 ‘superspreader’ event that was attended by thousands of people on New Year eve.

The trio’s arrest coincided with a huge jump in Covid-19 cases with the country recording the highest daily infections of 1, 365 on January 5.

Thirty-four people also died on the same day, the highest number since the first Covid-19 death was recorded in Zimbabwe in March last year.

Tinashe Chinachimwe, Arnold Kamudyariwa and Tafadzwa Kadzimwe organised the all night music concert at the heart of Harare’s most populous suburb of Mbare.

Prosecutor Michael Reza accused the trio of attempting to murder thousands of people through their reckless actions.

“The three circulated a banner on social media headed ‘Thursday December 31, 6pm to 6am. They overlooked the curfew and invited over 22 artists to perform,” Mr Reza said.

“A message must be sent to all that you don’t risk people’s lives in this manner.

“What they did is akin to attempted murder, the seriousness of their offence must be reflected in the sentence.”

Harare magistrate Vongai Guwuriro initially sentenced the three to a year in jail each for violating Covid-19 regulations before reducing their sentences by half of condition of good behaviour.

Meanwhile, four police officers stationed close to venue of the event have since been suspended on charges of negligence.

This week, Zimbabwe re-imposed a strict lockdown to slow down the spread of the coronavirus after Covid-19 cases more than doubled in the last two months to 17 194 as of January 5.

Ghanaian army quells parliament clash ahead of swearing-in

0

Ghanaian soldiers intervened in parliament to quell a clash between opposing parties in chaotic scenes overnight ahead of the body’s swearing-in on Thursday.

Mayhem erupted after a lawmaker from the ruling party tried to seize the ballot box during the vote for parliament speaker. The ensuing clash lasted several hours until the army moved in.

“There was total breakdown of law and order,” said MP-elect Kwame Twumasi Ampofo of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The new parliament is split down the middle between the two main parties, posing the risk of gridlock on tackling Ghana’s problems.

President Nana Akufo-Addo, who narrowly won re-election in the December 7 vote for the legislature and head of state, will also be sworn in on Thursday.

Rivers Government to investigate cause of Pipeline explosion

0

The Rivers State Government and the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, NOSDRA say they will investigate the gas pipeline explosion, that occurred on Wednesday in Emohua Local Government Area.

The incident which occurred around 3am local time, resulted in a leakage, which caused tremor.

The state Commissioner for Energy and Natural Resources, Dr Peter Medee, said officials of the ministry had been assigned to visit the location as the government would not rely on third party information.

“I have passed on the information to the Head of Department of Petroleum and Gas. So, they will go on Thursday to get all the facts, because we cannot rely on any information that is given to us by a third party. They will go there and then feed me back before we can go to the press,” the commissioner stated.

Similarly, the Port Harcourt zonal Director of NOSDRA, Ime Ekanem, said the agency was aware of the leakage, that efforts were on to avert a possible fire outbreak though he did not say if any preventive measure had been put in place.

“We are aware of the gas leakage at Emuoha and the agency is going to respond. Our investigation is tomorrow (Thursday). By the time we visit the scene and come back, we will be able to give details of what really happened,” Ekanem said.

No death
Chairman of Emuoha Local Government Area, Tom Aliezi, said Oveku and Oduoha communities were affected but no life was lost to the incident.

“Around 3am, I received a call from Eduoha because of the incident. When I asked what happened, I was told that one of the pipelines ruptured. I immediately contacted the security agencies. I called the LNG zonal controller in Emuoha Local Government Area, but he didn’t take his call.

“Then I spoke to the Controller of Pipelines and he said he was going to immediately make his management know about it. When he called me back, he said they moved in at once and that what they had been able to do was to stop the flow.

“I was there myself, so I said: ‘I am standing there, none of your people are here. So, whatever you are going to do, please do’. So that has been the situation. They said they came. I didn’t see them. We are still on them. As I speak, I am in Emuoha,” Aliezi explained.

Aliezi explained that he had reached out to the operators of the oil and gas facility for them to take charge of the situation and advised residents of the area to steer clear of the scene.

He stated, “I have advised my people to stay clear. So far, there is no casualty and from the information reaching me, I think it is an eroded pipeline, but that is subject to investigation.

“For now, everybody should stay clear of that place until we are sure that the experts are there to advise on what to do.”

Earlier, residents of Elibrada and Uduoha had raised the alarm of a possible fire outbreak as the deafening sound of gas leakage could be heard miles away, while the escaping gas could be seen from the facility located in the middle of the forest.

An eyewitness and indigene of Emuoha, Chizi Enyi, said the area was experiencing tremor due to the burst pipeline.

He said, “It is a gas pipeline rupture, but it is without fire and it has been making noise since 2am. I visited the site and the noise is too loud.

“However, we got information that the NLNG and Agip (companies believed to be the operators) people are mobilising to the place.

“Let me also thank the local government chairman for his quick response in trying to make all the necessary contacts to ensure that the leakage is stopped. So, we are still waiting for the companies to see how they can stop the leakage.”

Speaking on the development, the Paramount Ruler of Oduoha, Chief Ferdinand Ogbuehi, said the leakage caused panic in the community, that many residents had already fled.

“From 4am till now, the people have been living in fear. The vibration has sent many packing. We are not at rest at all. We had not seen this type of thing before. We want the government to come and see what is happening.

“We have announced to the people that nobody should go to the scene. We don’t want a fire outbreak from that place to destroy our community. We want the government to come. We are afraid of going closer to the place,” he said.

Also speaking, acting Paramount Ruler of the Elibrada community, Abel Obillor, called on relevant government agencies to intervene and protect the area from any harm that the leakage could cause.

“Around 3.55am, we heard a sound. Everyone in my community ran to the junction. The sound can still be heard from that particular place. I called on my people to stay away from the place and until the government comes to our rescue.

“We don’t know how this thing came about. We need the government to come and help us and see what is happening here. Our crops and everything will be affected; so, we need help,” he added.

Insurgency: Governor commends foreign interventions in Borno

The Executive Governor of Borno State, Babagana Umara Zulum has said that in the midst of challenges with the Boko Haram insurgency, countries from the west have shown more concern for the plight of Borno people than rich Arab nations whose people share similarity of religion and culture with majority of Borno citizens.

Zulum stated this in Maiduguri when he received the Palestinian Ambassador to Nigeria Saleh Fheied Saleh. The Governor praised the Palestine for being one of the few exceptions, within the Arab community.

“I am a practical person. I work with the realities I see on ground. In the face of our challenges over the years, we have received humanitarian support from the UK and other parts of Europe, the United States, Canada, from Japan and a host of others who have demonstrated concern and have made efforts to support our traumatized citizens in many ways especially on food, medicals and livelihoods. However, that level of concern never came from Arab countries with whom millions of Borno people share similarity in religion and culture. We even have indigenous shuwa Arabs in Borno and this shows how our histories are tied. We have made severe efforts, written and visited embassies of Arab countries, especially those that are rich and not dealing with crises, but obviously majority of the Arabs do not care about our situation, neither do they support us. The Arabs have not shown concern to us. Your visit however, has renewed our hope and we are very grateful for your visit”

The Palestinian ambassador had informed Zulum of a plan to support the Government of Borno State in some areas of need.

“There are a lot of Palestinian companies in Nigeria, they are willing to work with the Borno State Government, we are ready to cooperate with you, and we are ready to help in anything you want us to do that we can do”.

The Ambassador also said many Nigerians are currently residing in Palestine, particularly Borno indigenes, some of whom have diligently served the government and people of Palestine. He cited that among Borno people in Palestine, a lady called Fatima Barnawi was once a minister and a police chief.

NIN: NCC dismisses fears of mass disconnection of mobile subscribers

By Na’ankwat Dariem

The Nigerian Communications Commission,NCC has clarified the numerous publications in both print and electronic media ,regarding the unfounded fears of mass disconnection of telephone subscribers, as a result of the ongoing linkage of SIM Registration Records with the National Identity Number, NIN.

The Director Public Affairs,NCC Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde, in a statement, said it was necessary for the Commission to issue this clarification in order to allay the fears of subscribers and the general public.

According to the statement “Most of these publications are based on the erroneous assumption that for every network or SIM connection, there is one unique human subscriber.

“However, with the advent of social media and App-driven digital environment, network subscription went beyond human subscribers to include machines like PoS, Routers, Wi-Fi devices, electricity meters, CCTV, tracking devices etc.

It said “a recent survey conducted in Nigeria has shown that on average, there are now approximately 4 to 5 SIMs to every human subscriber. This explains the basis of allowing the linkage of up to 7 SIMs to 1 unique NIN in the recently launched Federal Government Portal.”

“Thus, if there are 43 million Nigerians with NINs, this could account for about 172 million SIMs already linked to NINs. It is very important to emphasise that the current exercise of linking NIN to SIM(s) is for the common good of all Nigerians, as it has far reaching benefits.”

“Apart from enhancing our general safety, this will help in such vital exercises like National Budgeting, Policy Planning, Social Intervention programs and many more.

“The Honourable Minister of Communication and Digital Economy has assured that the Government will continue to review the exercise in the light of experiences to ensure its smooth implementation.”

He called on  all  media partners, publishers and reporters to always seek clarification from the Commission before going to the press, especially on sensitive issues.

Three drown in eastern Congo’s Lake Kivu boat accident

0

At least two children and one woman have drowned after a passenger boat sank on Lake Kivu in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a local official said on Wednesday, as survivors warned that dozens more were still missing.

The boat, bound for the regional capital Goma, capsized overnight on Tuesday, after having set off in the dark overloaded and from an illegal mooring, regional government spokesman Claude Basila said.

Deadly boat accidents are common in Congo, which has few tarred roads across its vast, forested territory and where vessels are frequently loaded well beyond their capacity.

The spokesman said the boat had 51 passengers on board, of whom 46 were rescued, three died, leaving two missing.

However, survivors who were rescued by local boatsmen said the vessel had been carrying at least 100 passengers.

“A big wave knocked it over and there was nothing more but screams,” said Daniel Mutukura, who trod water for five hours before being rescued.

“I realised a lot of people had drowned because there were more than 100 people on board,” he said.

A survivor, Mubatiza Mukanirwa, said his wife and children had drowned. He estimated the boat had been carrying nearly 250 people, while another survivor thought 200 had been on board.

“It hurts so terribly,” Mukanirwa said.

Applause in Senate as congress rejects Republican objections

0

Applause has just rippled across the Senate floor as three Republican objections to the presidential election results were dismissed by Pence because no senator had signed on, a procedural requirement.

One challenge was presented by Jody Hice, a congressman who was just elected to his home state of Georgia in November.

Another Georgia representative, Marjorie Taylor Greene, objected in vain to Michigan’s electoral votes. The newly elected congresswoman has in the past expressed support for the QAnon conspiracy theory.

The third challenge to be dismissed was brought forward by Alabama congressman Mo Brooks, who was objecting to the results in Nevada.

Edo Election: Court disqualifies Ize-Iyamu’s Running mate

0

The Edo State High Court sitting in Benin has disqualified the All Progressives Congress, APC Deputy Governorship candidate in the September 19, 2020 election, Audu Ganiyu.

While delivering judgment in Benin City on Wednesday, the presiding judge, Justice H.A Courage-Ogbebor said that Ganiyu presented false information to the Independent National Electoral Commission in his Form EC9.

This comes as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Sunday Oshoakhemhe, had in a suit No: B/358/20 filed a case against the APC deputy governorship candidate and two others.

In his suit, Kadiri said ”the APC deputy-governorship candidate allegedly gave false information in form EC 9 to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to aid his qualification.”

Meanwhile, the Edo APC Media Campaign Council has reacted to the court verdict, saying ”the party’s candidate; Osagie Ize-Iyamu would appeal the ruling.”

In a statement issued shortly after the judgement, Chairman of the party’s Campaign Council, John Mayaki, said the governorship election remains subject of litigation over what he described as contended discrepancies in the academic credentials of the declared winner, Governor Godwin Obaseki.

I have already instructed my Counsel to appeal against the judgment, as I am convinced that the Court of Appeal will dispassionately consider the facts presented before the Court and arrive at a just decision in accordance with the law,” he said.

Ize-Iyamu also described the ruling as “unfortunate and utterly wrong.”

He urged his supporters to remain calm and law-abiding, while expressing confidence that justice will prevail in the matter.

US: Biden blasts Trump supporters’ siege of Capitol

0

US President-elect Joe Biden has blasted the ’’insurrection’’ of pro-Trump supporters who stormed the US Congress in a riot that saw a woman shot dead.

The Democrat demanded outgoing President Donald Trump “step up” and repudiate the violence.

Mr Trump, who had urged the demonstrators to march on the Capitol, later called on them to “go home”.

A joint session of Congress confirming Mr Biden’s election win has resumed after it was suspended by the mayhem.

US Vice-President Mike Pence started the session on Wednesday evening, saying it had been a “dark day in the history of the United States Capitol”.

Earlier, the protesters fought their way past police into the complex, shouting and waving Trump and US flags as they roamed the halls, demanding the results of the presidential election be overturned.

In stunning scenes beamed around the world, the invasion sent members of Congress scrambling for cover under their seats as a gunshot rang out and tear gas was fired in the Capitol Rotunda.

Female civilian

A female civilian who was shot inside the US Capitol during the chaos has died, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Department said.

Federal law enforcement official said two suspected explosive devices were found and were both rendered safe by the FBI and Capitol Hill police.

The rampage came as two Democrats won Senate seats in elections in Georgia, which shifted the balance of Congress to their party’s effective political control, aiding the passage of Mr Biden’s agenda after he is inaugurated on 20 January.
