Indonesia to start mass COVID-19 vaccination next week

0

Indonesia’s mass vaccination programme is set to start next week, a senior minister has  said, as about 700,000 doses of vaccines have already been widely distributed.

Currently battling one of Asia’s most stubborn coronavirus epidemics, Indonesia has secured more than 329 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines, most notably from Pfizer and its partner BioNTech, and AstraZeneca.

Those to be used in the first phase are from China’s Sinovac, which has named its vaccine CoronaVac.

Airlangga Hartarto, the country’s chief economic minister, said the mass vaccination programme is scheduled to start next week, pending data from BPOM, which he said draws findings from the clinical trials in Brazil and Turkey.

Indonesia’s state-owned drugmaker Bio Farma has already dispatched about 714,000 CoronaVac doses to the country’s 32 provinces, as contained in a statement . Indonesia has received 3 million doses of Sinovac’s vaccine so far.

Bambang Heriyanto, corporate secretary for Bio Farma, said  the vaccines had been pre-positioned to save time and allow inoculations to start as soon as BPOM’s authorisation is given.

Early results from late-stage trials of the CoronaVac, showed it was 91.25% effective, while researchers in Brazil have said it was more than 50% effective, though full results were yet to be released at the company’s request.

Budi Gunadi Sadikin, Indonesia’s health minister, has said that Indonesia needs to inoculate about 181 million people, or roughly 67% of its population, to reach herd immunity.

He said 1.3 million health workers would be first in line for the shots, followed by public servants.

The programme aims to complete the vaccinations within 15 months, a senior health ministry official said.

EPL Roundup : Manchester city, Leicester city record wins

0

Fine first-time finishes from James Maddison and Youri Tielemans helped Leicester beat Newcastle and move to within a point of the top of the Premier League, BSNsports.con.ng reports.

Maddison fired in Jamie Vardy’s pull-back from just inside the penalty area to break Newcastle’s resistance before Tielemans curled home from 20 yards after Marc Albrighton’s pass.

Andy Carroll’s equally impressive volley reduced the deficit, his first goal since rejoining Newcastle in August 2019.

Leicester moved back above Tottenham into third, although they have played a game more than Spurs, leaders Liverpool and second-placed Manchester United.

Manchester City produced a ruthless attacking display to cruise past Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and increase the pressure on manager Frank Lampard.

The visitors, who were without a number of first-team players following an outbreak of coronavirus at the club, stunned Chelsea with three goals in 16 first-half minutes.

Ilkay Gundogan’s crisp low finish broke the deadlock and Phil Foden doubled City’s lead three minutes later, tucking a superb first-time strike beyond Edouard Mendy after fine work from Kevin de Bruyne.

De Bruyne deservedly got his name on the scoresheet with a close-range finish after Raheem Sterling’s curling strike had rebounded off the woodwork.

Callum Hudson-Odoi scored in second-half stoppage time for Chelsea, firing Kai Havertz’s cross beyond Premier League debutant Zack Steffen.

The result lifted City up to fifth in the table, four points off Liverpool and Manchester United with a game in hand on both.

Chelsea dropped to eighth.

Vietnam to buy 30 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines

0

Vietnam has agreed to buy 30 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine produced by AstraZeneca Plc, the government says, adding that authorities are also seeking to purchase vaccines from other sources, including Pfizer Inc.

The Southeast Asian country which has previously agreed to get a Russian vaccine, also said it would not rush to secure vaccine deals, citing the potential for high financial costs and after managing to contain its coronavirus outbreaks to only 1,494 cases, with 35 deaths.

The AstraZeneca and Oxford University COVID-19 vaccine is cheaper than some others and can be stored at fridge temperature, which makes it easier to transport and use, particularly in developing countries.

“We’ve already signed an agreement to guarantee the AstraZeneca vaccine for 15 million people, which is equivalent to 30 million doses,” deputy health minister Truong Quoc Cuong told a government meeting.

Vietnam is also in talks to purchase vaccines from Pfizer Inc, Russia’s Sputnik V and China, the deputy minister said.

Cuong did not name the Chinese vaccine candidate.

Cuong also said Vietnam would be eligible to buy vaccines from the World Health Organization’s COVAX programme to cover 16%, or 15.6 million of its almost 98 million population, but said more information would be available in the first quarter.

Vietnam, which has yet to give formal regulatory approval to any vaccine, is also developing vaccines domestically.

The country has conducted human trials of its ‘Nano Covax’ vaccine and a second home-grown vaccine is expected to start undergoing human trials this month.

Vietnam in August said it had signed up for 50 million-150 million doses of the Russian vaccine, though delivery remains unclear.

Malaysia says insufficient evidence to reopen probe into Irish teen’s death

0

A Malaysian court on Monday announced it would not reopen a probe into the death of an Irish teenager whose body was found in a jungle after she went missing during a family holiday, saying she likely died of misadventure.

In August 2019, the naked body of Nora Anne Quoirin, 15, who suffered from learning difficulties, was found in a ravine near the Dusun holiday resort where her family was staying in Seremban, about 70 km (44 miles) south of the Malaysian capital.

On Monday, the Seremban Coroner’s Court closed the inquiry, saying there was insufficient evidence to indicate foul play.

Police had earlier ruled that out, but her family questioned the findings and said she had never before left them voluntarily.

Malaysia opened an inquest into the death in August at the family’s request, with proceedings streamed online due to coronavirus restrictions.

The court on Monday ruled that there was no one involved in Quoirin’s death and it was more likely she had simply got lost in the jungle.

“It was more probable than not that she had died of misadventure…” coroner Maimoonah Aid told the court.

“For me to speculate and presume of her actions and involvement of a third party without any proof, that would be a breach of my duty so the inquiry is hereby closed.”

A lawyer for the family did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Her parents, Sebastien and Meabh Quoirin, appeared solemn on the court proceedings live-stream as the decision was read.

Her mother Meabh, one of nearly 50 witnesses who testified at the inquest, had said she believed her daughter could have been abducted and accused authorities of not taking her concerns seriously.

Police, however, said there was no evidence that Quoirin was kidnapped and insisted their probe was thorough.

An autopsy had established that Quoirin had died from internal bleeding, probably caused by prolonged hunger and stress.

Greece is currently in a nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus, and the government needs to tackle the fallout of the pandemic, speed up economic reforms and revive growth.

Mitsotakis is also likely to want to signal continuity in some key areas such as finance and foreign affairs.

China set to increase corn acreage in 2021

0

China is set to increase the area sown with corn in its main grain regions this year.

This was disclosed by the newly appointed Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Tang Renjian, who said the expansion is part of a comprehensive plan to ensure food security.

Authorities will focus on expanding corn acreage in the northeast as well as areas around the Yellow, Huai and Hai rivers, Tang said in an interview with newsmen on Sunday.

The pledge comes after China’s corn prices soared to record levels after authorities nearly emptied once-mammoth temporary reserves at auctions. Importers have brought in record volumes of grain to plug the shortage.

Corn acreage and output is expected to recover and increase, while corn prices will probably fall in the next few years,” said Meng Jinhui, senior analyst with Shengda Futures.

China had been cutting down on corn acreage in the past few years to whittle down the state stockpiles and to boost output of other crops like soybeans.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics,  farmers planted 41.264 million hectares of corn in 2020, with output of the grain at 260.67 million tonnes,

Authorities must also make sure that the acreage of double-crop rice that expanded in southern regions in 2020 does not decline this year, while the yield must improve, Tang said.
