DRC: Over 3 Million Displaced People Returned Home- UN

0

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, more than 3 million displaced people have returned home as of July 2025, according to new data from the United Nations agency for humanitarian affairs (OCHA).

In the North Kivu province, more than 2 million people have been able to go back to their villages, while they were more than 600,000 to do so in South Kivu.

The OCHA data also shows the number of internally displaced people in the country has dropped from 6.9 million in 2024 to 5.9 million this year.

Behind this glimmer of hope, humanitarian situation in DRC remain dire, and returnees often face difficult conditions.

In North Kivu, some have had no choice but to go home after displacement camps were dismantled in Goma and Nyiragongo earlier this year.

The country is also still grappling with cholera, measles and mpox outbreaks.

More than 27 million people are affected by food insecurity, with 4.5 million children suffering from acute malnutrition, according to new OCHA figures.

The Congolese government and the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels have signed a cease fire agreement in mid-July.

But the M23 recently attacks against civilians have threatened the integrity of the peace process.

“The Rwanda-backed rebels have killed at least 319 civilians between 9 and 21 July in four villages in Rutshuru territory”, according to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Mali Detains two Generals, 45 Soldiers Over Coup Allegations

0

At least 45 Malian soldiers, including two generals, were arrested for attempts to “destabilise the institutions” in the Sahel country.

Among those arrested was General Abass Dembele, a former governor of the central Mopti region who is popular within army ranks.

Soldiers arrested Debele on the outskirts of the capital, Bamako, without explaining the reasons for his apprehension, a source close to the General said.

Nema Sagara, a brigadier General in the air force, was also arrested. She is one of the few high-ranking women in the Malian army.

“All are soldiers. Their objective was to overthrow the junta,” the MP said.

After eight years of relative political stability in Mali, a group of Malian soldiers stormed Bamako in August 2020 and detained then-President, Aboubakar Keita.

The coup d’etat followed weeks of protests against Keita, who was accused of failing to combat violent militant groups who were waging an armed rebellion in the North.

The new military junta promised to deal with the problem swiftly.

Internal divisions within the new government led to a second coup in May 2021, resulting in the accession of Colonel Assimi Goïta to the presidency of Mali. A role he has occupied ever since.

Following the 2020 coup, the Malian junta with Goïta at the helm promised to hold elections within 18 months.

No vote has been held so far, with the government recently postponing the ballot to 2027.

Meanwhile, terrorist attacks have been on the rise.

According to Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED), in the first half of 2024, terrorist groups killed a record 7,620 people in the Sahel in the first half of 2024.

Recently, the armed militants group, killed more than 30 soldiers at military base boulkessi in central Mali on June 1st.

In the face of the attacks, the junta has intensified crackdowns on political dissidents.

In May, President Goïta dissolved all political parties and organisations in Mali, which sparked widespread protests.

The 38 migrants, 25 men, six women and seven children, are all Moroccan nationals and will have to return to their country of origin, the court in Silves ruled.

The migrants who washed ashore in a small wooden boat in the Algarve will be repatriated, a Silves court judge ruled.

They have 20 days to leave the country voluntarily, failing that, they will be forcibly expelled.

They are to all remain in custody and temporarily housed in a pavilion in Sagres, provided by the Vila do Bispo council, which has been adapted to accommodate all migrants.

A team of the national gendarmerie force of Portugal GNR will be on site, supported by Civil Protection and the fire brigade.

After the judge’s decision became known, the Minister for the Presidency congratulated the speed of justice, saying that the Portuguese authorities “deserve a big congratulations”, and assured that Portugal maintains its “secure maritime borders”.

“Portugal has a large coastline, although we are vulnerable, the Portuguese authorities reacted quickly and effectively,” the minister told journalists. “The Portuguese coast is safe,” emphasised Leitão Amaro from Olhão in the Algarve.

TETFund Multidisciplinary Laboratories to Enhance Local Research

0

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) says its new multidisciplinary research laboratories will enable researchers to conduct all types of research locally, eliminating the need to send samples abroad for analysis.

Specifically, it said six of such laboratories are being established across the country.

Executive Secretary of the Fund, Mr. Sunny Echono, announced this on Monday in Abuja while receiving the leadership of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), led by its President, Mobolaji Adeniyi.

He said while four of these state-of-the-art facilities are currently under construction in Port Harcourt, Kano, Abuja and Lagos, two more will commence before the end of the year.

Echono who was the 28th President of the Institute, also promised to mobilise friends of the agency for the furnishing of the Institute’s Resource and Exhibition Centre currently under construction, as requested by the President.

The TETFund boss also endowed an annual prize at the Institute’s Architecture Annual Awards, sponsorship of publication of its journal among others.

He revealed that the agency would soon commission iconic projects across the country, adding that four of these projects would be unveiled in Kano and Osun States before the end of the month.

He said: “The biggest observation that was made when I came in here is the fact that we were dotting our campuses with all sorts of blocks, and we’re now transiting to iconic buildings.

“I am pleased to report that on Thursday, we’ll be commissioning some of such projects that I feel proud to associate with, and then Nigerians will see what the new type of architecture of our campuses that reflect the ambience that is required. Because campus architecture has its own serene its own grandeur that is known all over the world.

“And they were trying to recreate that in our campuses. Thereafter, we will be in Osun, where we are also going to be commissioning several projects before the end of the month. So Nigerians will begin to see what our campuses should look like, not some of the horrible videos that we’ve seen depicting inhumane living environment,” he said.

Earlier, Arc. Adeniyi applauded the intervention agency under Echono for the development of infrastructure in the education sector.

She called for patronage of more NIA members, especially in the design of institutions’ infrastructure.

“These interventions in Nigeria’s Tertiary Education sector have left indelible marks in the annals of our educational development. We commend specifically the much heralded initiative of the TETFund Centres of Excellence (TCoEs) interventions across some Tertiary Institutions nationwide.

“That our institutions are referred to as Citadels of Knowledge & Learning isn’t a misnomer. The axiom in itself connotes a certain level of characteristic command of presence and ambience which are aptly exhibited by our first generation universities,” she stated.

Nigeria Pledges to Support UN Global Advocate for Peace

The Nigerian government has pledged to support the newly appointed United Nations Global Advocate for Peace, Maryam Bukar Hassan, in her bid to promote unity and peace across the globe.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, who disclosed this on Monday in Abuja, described the appointment of Maryam, a Nigerian spoken word artist and peace advocate who is the first person to hold the role across the UN’s entire Peace and Security Pillar, as well deserved.

Speaking when the United Nations Global Advocate for Peace led her team on a courtesy visit to his office at the Presidential Villa Abuja, VP Shettima noted that Maryam, had been consistent in her peace advocacy as depicted in one of her videos that went viral: ‘Violence has no Religion’.

“That is the Nigeria of our dream, and she (Maryam) has been consistent, and one of her ardent contributions was that video that went viral: ‘Violence has no Religion’. To me, it is the crowning glory of her career. I have watched that particular video more than a hundred times because it’s very inspiring,” the Vice President stated.

Taking a leaf from former US House Speaker, Tip O’Neill, who said that ‘all politics is local’, VP Shettima pointed out that Maryam’s resolve to align “with the challenges and the aspirations in her home state of Borno is equally inspiring.”

The Vice President assured her of Nigeria’s unflinching support throughout her tenure, maintaining that the administration of President Bola Tinubu, a pro-youth administration, will do everything possible to support her cause.

He stated: “On behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, I want to warmly welcome you and thank you from the bottom of my heart for the great work you’re doing for the UN. And most importantly, on behalf of the President, I want to assure you that the present administration is a pro-youth administration, and we will do whatever it takes to support your cause.

“Be rest assured, Maryam, that you’re not alone. We’re in this together, and whatever support you need, we’ll give you. In fact, as a politician, it is in my self-enlightened interest to align myself with you because you are promoting peace; you are promoting unity, not creating disunity.

“Believe me, the grass is not greener on the other side. We can make this country great. God has blessed us with enormous human and material resources, and when we properly handle them, we can really transform lives in this country.”

Peace Message

The leader of the delegation and the UN First Global Advocate for Peace said her primary duty is to bring the message of peace to the world, just as she noted that she is not only going to be an advocate for United Nations peacekeeping but would also promote the same in Nigeria where she comes from.

The purpose of her visit, according to her, was to showcase the work she and her group had been doing to promote peace and harmony, calling for collaboration with the federal government for an enabling environment for the group to carry out its advocacy project.

“Nigeria is grappling with so many security challenges and as far as my work is concerned, I am to go global and want to start with my own country. This is the reason for our visit. We are trying to showcase what we are doing and to know how we can do this together, as this is not something that we can do alone,” she noted.

On the roadmap for peace advocacy with the United Nations, one of the members of the delegation said the major work Ms Maryam will do is to build a coalition of people in order to bring together many other young voices.

For the next two years, the team said they will be working with other creative people around the world who will help share information about how they can build peace.

Lassa Fever Cases Decline, Fatalities Remain Alarmingly High – NCDC

0

Nigeria is witnessing a fall in Lassa fever cases, though the fatality rate remains worryingly high, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).

In its latest report, the agency revealed that while the number of suspected and confirmed cases has dropped compared with the same period in 2024, the Case Fatality Rate (CFR) has risen.

So far in 2025, 145 deaths have been recorded, representing a CFR of 18.6 percent, compared with 17.6 percent last year.

The NCDC described the decline in cases as encouraging but warned that the persistently high death rate is a cause for concern among health experts.

Cases fell from 11 in epidemiological week 29 to just three in week 30, recorded in Edo and Ondo states.

Since the start of the year, Nigeria has recorded 825 confirmed infections and 155 deaths across 21 states and 105 local government areas.

The agency reported that 89 percent of all confirmed cases were concentrated in five states: Ondo (32%), Bauchi (23%), Edo (17%), Taraba (14%), and Ebonyi (3%).

The most affected age group remains those aged between 21 and 30 years, with a male-to-female ratio of 1:0.8.

Despite the decline in numbers, the NCDC noted persistent challenges, including late presentation to healthcare facilities, high treatment costs, poor environmental sanitation, and low public awareness in high-burden areas.

Response measures during the week included clinical management training, public risk communication campaigns, rodent control programmes, distribution of thermometers for contact monitoring, and the deployment of rapid response teams to affected states.

The NCDC urged Nigerians to practise preventive measures such as proper food storage, maintaining environmental hygiene, and seeking medical attention early to curb the spread and reduce the severity of the disease.

Lassa fever, a viral haemorrhagic illness, is primarily transmitted through contact with the urine or faeces of infected rats.

It can also spread from person to person through bodily fluids, contaminated objects, or unsterilised medical equipment.

Symptoms include fever, sore throat, headache, vomiting, muscle pain, and, in severe cases, bleeding from body openings.
