Women’s Leadership Crucial for Governance, Sustainable Development

0

The UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, has stated that women’s leadership is critical to advancing justice, good governance, and sustainable development.

She made the submissions during a high-level strategic fireside dialogue with Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, at the Nigerian Women’s Day in New York.

“The foundations of human rights, women’s rights, are about justice.  When there are injustices, the nation loses. For us in Nigeria, we are holding up more than half the sky.”

Mohammed, highlighting the indispensable role of women in decision-making spaces, called for deliberate measures to increase women’s representation in governance, particularly in the National Assembly.

“When you are in the National Assembly, you have oversight over the budget and the opportunity to make laws that uplift our women. That is why it’s crucial to fight for every seat we can occupy,” she emphasised.

Mohammed also highlighted the connection between gender equality and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

She stressed the urgency of inclusive policy interventions in the remaining years leading to the 2030 SDG deadline, cautioning that gaps in women’s access to education, health, and economic opportunities would undermine global development ambitions.

“Without Goal 5 on gender equality, there are no SDGs. Half the world cannot be left behind.”

The UN Deputy Secretary-General outlined practical steps to ensure women’s participation in governance and policy, urging the creation of line items in budgets to support capacity building for women in legislative and administrative roles.

On economic empowerment, Mohammed stressed inclusive growth strategies that integrate women into all stages of production and enterprise.

“It is not enough to provide loans or inputs to women farmers. You need to ensure access across the full value chain, from production to the table, so women can participate fully and benefit from the profits,” she explained.

She also highlighted ongoing UN-backed initiatives to support women’s participation in clean energy, finance, and technology sectors across Nigeria.

Addressing innovation and the digital economy, Mohammed urged policies that place women at the centre of technology adoption and innovation.

The Deputy Secretary-General stressed the importance of mental health and psychosocial support as foundational to sustainable development. Drawing lessons from Nigeria’s northeast, she highlighted local initiatives to address trauma caused by conflict and displacement.

Concluding on leadership, Mohammed reflected on the qualities required to drive sustainable change: courage, conviction, and service. She encouraged women to occupy leadership spaces, support one another, and use their voices effectively.

She said; “If you see a space, take it. Make room for other women. The best companions are other women. Respect them, protect them, and fight together for justice.

Minister Sulaiman-Ibrahim lauded Mohammed’s submissions, emphasizing that women’s participation in governance is not only a matter of representation but a matter of delivering justice and equity. She reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting initiatives that build women’s capacity and expand their presence in leadership roles across all sectors.

The fireside dialogue brought together policymakers, young leaders, and development actors, highlighting the intersection of gender, governance, and sustainable development in Nigeria.

It underscored that women’s empowerment is not merely symbolic but central to achieving justice, inclusive growth, and the full implementation of the SDGs.

The Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has commended the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, for organising an Interfaith break fast for senators and staff of the National Assembly, describing the gesture as one that promotes unity and fellowship among lawmakers and workers.

Speaking during the gathering in Abuja, Senator Jibrin thanked the Senate President for providing the opportunity for Muslim lawmakers to break their fast while also extending hospitality to their Christian colleagues.

He noted that providing food for those observing the Ramadan fast is strongly encouraged in Islam and attracts immense spiritual reward.

“Let me begin by thanking the President of the Senate for organising this gathering for us to break our fast today and also for our Christian brothers and sisters who joined us,” he said.

According to him, acts of charity and kindness during Ramadan are highly valued, adding that anyone who assists in feeding those observing the fast receives blessings from Allah.

Senator Jibrin further explained that the event went beyond merely breaking the fast, saying it served as a platform to strengthen unity and deepen relationships among senators and staff of the National Assembly.

He particularly praised the inclusion of junior staff members in the event, noting that it was the first time such a broad group within the National Assembly community was brought together for the exercise.

“This gathering is not only about breaking the fast; it has helped to bring us together, further unite us and cement the bond among senators as well as staff of the National Assembly,” he said.

The Deputy Senate President also used the occasion to pray for peace, unity and progress in Nigeria, asking God to bless the country and guide its leaders.

He prayed for continued strength and wisdom for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his efforts to steer the nation towards prosperity.

Senator Jibrin also prayed for God’s guidance and strength for Senator Akpabio to continue promoting initiatives that foster unity and national development.

Also speaking on behalf of the Christian faithful at the gathering, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, thanked Senator Akpabio for the gesture and also urged the Legislature to always think about what will bring peace and unity to the nation.

The session concluded with prayers for Nigeria and its leadership, as participants expressed hope for greater cooperation and progress for the people of Nigeria.

House Ad-Hoc Panel Laments Agencies Delays in Ports Probe

The House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee investigating the performance and benefits accruing to the Nigerian Government from all concessionaire-operated ports, including air and sea terminals, has raised concerns over poor coordination by government agencies.

The Chairman of the committee, Mr. Kolawole Davidson Akinlayo said at a press briefing in Abuja that the panel has faced difficulties in obtaining necessary information from several Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

Mr. Akinlayo said that “more than a month into the assignment, the committee has struggled to compel relevant MDAs to appear and provide the data required to complete its work within the stipulated timeframe, although some stakeholders have been cooperative.’

The committee is examining shipping activities from 2006 to 2025 to assess the benefits and performance of government-concessioned ports.

Mr. Akinlayo said; “The Committee was inaugurated on February 3, 2026, by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas. Its mandate includes examining the terms and conditions of concession agreements entered into from 2006 to 2025; assessing revenue flows, remittances, and other financial benefits accruing to the Nigerian Government and its agencies; reviewing compliance with contractual, regulatory, and safety obligations by concessionaires; appraising infrastructural development, operational efficiency, service quality, and labour issues; identifying challenges, gaps, and systemic weaknesses within the concession framework; and formulating clear, practicable recommendations to improve policy, legislation, and future concession arrangements.

Speaking on the purpose of the Committee, the Chairman said, “This Committee was constituted in response to growing national concern over the management, performance, transparency, and value outcomes of concession arrangements governing some of Nigeria’s most strategic public assets. These assets; our seaports, airports, terminals, and jetties, are not ordinary commercial facilities. They are sovereign economic gateways, national security infrastructure, and critical enablers of trade, mobility, and development.”

He said, “Since the exercise began, members of this Committee have approached this mandate with the highest sense of duty, responsibility, professionalism, and commitment to the national interest. We have been transparent and democratic in the exercise of our powers and have refrained from high-handedness.”

Mr. Akinlayo also said that the briefing is to restate the commitment of the Committee to fulfilling its mandate as assigned by the House and to warn heads of MDAs and their management not to constitute a clog in the wheel of this Committee in carrying out this assignment.

“Many of the important agencies have on several occasions deliberately refused to honour the invitation of the Committee for no just cause. In fact, some of the agencies that have so far appeared before the Committee could not submit the required documents. For example, the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) had appeared before us but disappointedly failed to comply fully with our requests,” he said.

Mr. Akinlayo said that in the light of the foregoing, the committee wishes to give the last warning to the Chief Executive officers and heads of the following agencies to change their attitude towards the committee or have themselves to blame.

“They include the Nigerian Ports Authority, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), NIMASA, NLNG, INTELS and Julius Berger Plc,” he said.

The lawmaker also explained that henceforth, the Committee would no longer tolerate contempt of the parliament and has resolved to invoke the statutory constitutional provisions to compel any erring CEO/head to appear before it.

“You are aware that Section 89 and 129 of the 1999 Constitution (As amended) have provided a list of guidelines and powers that are to assist the legislature in carrying out its oversight functions. These include issuing summons, warrants and fines when its orders, as approved by the Constitution, are violated. In more drastic instances, the legislature has the constitutional power to recommend the removal of office holders, where it is believed that the office holder(s) is not effectively discharging his constitutional or statutory duties.

“I wish to state without mincing words that this Committee will not hesitate to subpoena any disrespectful and uncooperative CEO/head of MDAs; we will not develop cold feet in directing the Inspector General of Police to arrest any CEO or head of MDAs that fails to honour our invitation. Anyone who is out to sabotage our work will no longer be given the oxygen to undermine the legislature. We shall invoke the necessary constitutional provisions to compel compliance with the directives of the Committee,” he warned.

Mr. Akinlayo stressed that the committee is not witch-hunting anybody or organisation but the mandate given to it by the House must be accomplished and in doing so, it will not spare any CEO or officer or individual or group that have resolved to treat the parliament with contempt.

“Like I have always said, Nigerians deserve to know whether these concessions have delivered value for money, complied with contractual obligations, enhanced national competitiveness, protected public assets, and contributed meaningfully to economic growth, employment, and revenue generation. And the only way we can get these answers is to judiciously engage with all the stakeholders.

“Therefore, on behalf of the Ad hoc Committee and indeed the leadership of the House of Representatives, I hereby appealed to the aforementioned organisations and agencies to kindly comply with the letters of invitations extended to them. We shall not entertain any frivolous excuses because this assignment must be timeously executed,” he added.

Nigerian Government Reaffirms Commitment to Peace, Security in Benue

0

The Nigerian Government has reassured communities in Benue State of its resolve to tackle insecurity and restore lasting peace across the country.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (North Central), Abiodun Essiet, gave the assurance on Thursday during the second day of her official community engagement visit to Benue State, where she reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s resolve to address security challenges in the state and other affected parts of the country.

Speaking during interactions with residents, Dr. Essiet stressed that the Nigerian Government remains committed to restoring peace and stability, noting that “sustained collaboration among communities, security agencies and traditional institutions is essential to achieving lasting security.”

She explained that “the engagement forms part of the Presidential Community Engagement Peace Initiative, designed to ensure that community perspectives inform policy responses and security strategies while strengthening peacebuilding efforts and social cohesion in affected areas.”

Dr. Essiet also reiterated the Nigerian Government’s ongoing efforts to curb terrorist activities and intensify security operations across the North-Central region and other parts of the country facing similar challenges.

Residents narrated the impact of persistent attacks on their communities, particularly incursions by armed herders which they said had “resulted in displacement, loss of lives and the destruction of homes and farmlands.”

The communities appealed to the Nigerian Government for urgent intervention to halt the violence and restore normalcy.

As part of the visit, the Presidential aide convened the physical session of the Citizens’ Assembly in Ushongo Local Government Area, bringing together a broad spectrum of stakeholders from across the Benue North-East Senatorial District.

Participants included traditional rulers, religious leaders, farmers, herders, youth and women drawn from Katsina-Ala, Konshisha, Kwande, Logo, Ukum, Ushongo and Vandeikya Local Government Areas.

The session provided an open platform for stakeholders to articulate the challenges confronting their communities, with insecurity, infrastructural deficits and the socio-economic impact of recurring conflicts dominating discussions.

Participants attributed the persistent instability in the region largely to border disputes, farmer–herder clashes and the activities of individuals who exploit communal tensions for personal interests.

On her part, Dr. Essiet assured them that their concerns and recommendations would be documented and communicated to the Presidency and relevant federal authorities for necessary action.

She reiterated the commitment of the Renewed Hope administration to strengthening community engagement as a critical component of addressing security challenges across the country.

The Presidential aide also encouraged residents to continue supporting security agencies with credible information while maintaining peaceful cooperation with government efforts aimed at restoring stability in the region.

Dr. Essiet also paid a courtesy call on the Tor Kwande I, His Royal Highness Zaki Ambrose Iortyegh, where she briefed the monarch on the objectives of the engagement, noting that the visit reflects the Presidency’s commitment to direct dialogue with communities affected by insecurity across the North-Central region.

The royal father commended the Government for sending a representative to listen to the concerns of the people and called for urgent and decisive action to restore peace in the affected areas.

Dr. Essiet later proceeded to Jato-Aka in Kwande Local Government Area for a condolence visit and an on-the-spot assessment following the recent wave of attacks in the community.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Mr. Richard Pheelangwa has reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the Nigerian Air Force in protecting lives and safeguarding national security.

Pheelangwa gave the assurance during a visit to the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, at the Air Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The visit forms part of Mr. Pheelangwa’s ongoing familiarisation tour of the Services under the Ministry of Defence.

He said “the visit was intended to strengthen the institutional relationship between the Ministry and the Air Force and to establish closer engagement that would enhance the framework for supporting the operations of the Service.”

He reiterated the Ministry’s readiness to continue providing the necessary support required for the Air Force to deliver on its national responsibilities, while commending the Chief of the Air Staff and his team for their professionalism and dedication to duty.

The Permanent Secretary also acknowledged the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that “the administration’s commitment to national security continues to shape the strategic direction of the Armed Forces.”

Responding, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, highlighted several areas where enhanced support from the Ministry would further strengthen the operational capacity of the Service. These include timely approvals and release of funds, acquisition of additional helicopters, expansion of accommodation and infrastructure as the Service continues to grow, as well as the regularisation of teaching and medical personnel serving in Air Force schools and hospital facilities.

Air Marshal Aneke assured the Permanent Secretary of the Nigerian Air Force’s continued cooperation with the Ministry of Defence in advancing national security objectives and sustaining the operational readiness of the Service.

Deputy Speaker Kalu Assures Igbo Leaders Of Anim State Creation

0

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Benjamin Kalu, has assured leaders and stakeholders from the South-East region of Nigeria that the creation of the proposed Anim state is possible.

He stressed that the creation of new states should be viewed as a strategic tool for development and inclusive governance, rather than merely a political ambition.

“State creation is not just about having a new status. It is an instrument of development that ensures the dividends of democracy reach the grassroots,” he said.

He noted that the South-East remains the only geopolitical zone in Nigeria with five states, while the other zones have six, a disparity he said affects political balance and equitable representation within the federation.

“When you look at the comparative analysis of the geopolitical zones, only one region, the South-East, is lagging. It ought not to be so,” Kalu said.

The Deputy Speaker emphasised that achieving the goal would require strategic engagement, diplomacy and national consensus rather than confrontational agitation.

“To achieve this is not through violence or shouting about marginalisation. It is through negotiation, building friendships and shaking hands across the Niger,” he stated.

Mr Kalu urged promoters of the ANIM State proposal to expand consultations beyond the South-East, noting that lawmakers from other geopolitical zones would ultimately determine the fate of the proposal when it comes up for voting.

“My vote alone cannot secure the state. In fact, I will not vote because I will be presiding. You must build friendships across the North, South-West and South-South because they will be in the chamber when the vote is called,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of securing the support of all South-East governors, describing their endorsement as crucial to the success of the proposal.

“You cannot do this alone without involving the governors of the South-East. All the governors, especially those from the affected areas, must be part of the agreement,” he added.

The Deputy Speaker further advised stakeholders to remain flexible during negotiations, noting that adjustments to the proposed territorial configuration could become necessary during the legislative process.

“If the powers that be recommend expanding the territorial parameters to accommodate broader interests, it should be accepted. What matters is achieving development and progress,” he said.

The push for the creation of the Anim state has drawn strong backing from political leaders, traditional rulers and lawmakers across Nigeria.

A delegation from Imo and Anambra states met with the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the House Committee on the Review of the Constitution, Mr Benjamin Okezie Kalu.

The delegation expressed appreciation for his role in facilitating consensus among South-East stakeholders on the proposed state as part of the ongoing constitutional review process.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, the Senator representing Imo West Senatorial District and facilitation of the group, Senator Osita Izunaso, said that the group came in a representative capacity from communities across Imo and Anambra states, advocating the creation of ANIM State.

According to him, the agitation enjoys widespread support from political leaders, traditional rulers, local government officials and community stakeholders across the affected areas.

“We have come here in a representative capacity from Imo State and Anambra State, which are looking for this state called ANIM State,” he said.

Senator Izunaso explained that the delegation comprised members of the Imo and Anambra State Houses of Assembly, local government chairmen, leaders of the ANIM State movement and representatives of traditional institutions in the South-East.

He noted that the campaign for the new state had already gained legislative momentum, revealing that federal lawmakers from the affected constituencies had passed resolutions endorsing the proposal.

The senator also disclosed that groundwork for the anticipated state had already begun, with key infrastructure projects being developed in the proposed capital area.

The Imo State Government has already built a Government House in Orlu in preparation for the proclamation of ANIM State.

“If you enter Orlu today, you will hardly recognise the town. Internal roads have been rehabilitated, hospitals upgraded, and universities are functioning well. We are ready and only waiting for the pronouncement of the state,” he said.

Senator Izunaso said the visit was also aimed at commending the Deputy Speaker for providing leadership that helped the South-East arrive at a unified position after the region was asked to present a single proposal for an additional state.

“When the National Assembly committees on constitutional review asked the South-East to produce one additional state, it was the Deputy Speaker who took the initiative, convened meetings and worked tirelessly until the region arrived at a consensus.

“He is not from Imo or Anambra, yet God used him to play this role at this critical time. That is why we came to appreciate him,” he added.
