The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd.), has reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to tackling terrorism, banditry, and other security threats, while calling on Nigerians to support ongoing operations.

Speaking after a strategic meeting with the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oloyede, and Service Chiefs, the Minister highlighted efforts to review operational strategies across multiple theatres and emphasised the importance of collective responsibility in addressing insecurity.

Gen. Musa said casualties have occurred in the line of duty, the Armed Forces continue to inflict significant losses on terrorists and bandits, including eliminating key commanders and destroying their assets. He warned that individuals aiding criminal groups with information or logistics would be treated as accomplices.

The Minister also urged media houses to report responsibly and avoid disseminating terrorist propaganda that could demoralise troops or give undue publicity to criminal elements. Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Mr Richard Pheelangwah, and Service Chiefs, including the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shuaibu; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke; and Chief of Defence Intelligence, Lt. Gen. Emmanuel Udieandeye, were present during the briefing.

Gen. Musa also received the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr Kingsley Udeh, SAN, at the Ministry headquarters in Ship House, Abuja, to discuss enhanced collaboration between MDAs in support of national security.

The Minister stressed the importance of indigenous technological development, self-financed research, and sustainable energy solutions, noting that many military barracks face electricity challenges that impact operational efficiency and personnel welfare.

Dr Udeh, accompanied by the Director-Generals of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), the Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO), and the Energy Commission of Nigeria, affirmed their readiness to support the Ministry of Defence.

Each agency outlined technological capabilities and research products that could be applied to defence operations. Both Ministers agreed that such partnerships would translate Nigeria’s scientific potential into practical solutions for national development and security.

Gen. Musa emphasised that stronger synergy among MDAs and integration of scientific and technological support into defence planning would enhance operational effectiveness and the welfare of personnel, providing a sustainable path to national stability.

The Governor of Jigawa State, Umar Namadi, has launched the third phase of the Civil Servants’ Agricultural Support Programme and unveiled the FADAMA J-CARES 1.0 Compendium and Completion Report to strengthen livelihoods and economic resilience.

The initiatives involve billions of naira in investments aimed at boosting agriculture, economic recovery and community development across the state.

Governor Namadi said the programme enables civil servants to engage in farming by providing subsidised farm inputs and soft loans with flexible repayment terms.

He noted that since its launch in July 2024, the programme has supported 8,432 civil servants with over ₦3.03 billion in the first phase and 5,750 workers with nearly ₦1.26 billion in the second phase.

Governor Namadi added that the third phase will support about 3,000 civil servants with funding valued at over ₦1.6 billion.

This brings the total investment in the programme to more than ₦5.9 billion and the number of beneficiaries to over 17,000 across the state.

He noted that the initiative is helping to expand agricultural activities, bring more farmland under cultivation and create additional sources of income for civil servants.

The governor also highlighted measures introduced to improve transparency and efficiency, including digital registration of beneficiaries, GPS verification of farm locations and electronic tracking of farm inputs through JASCO stores.

He said the focus on dry-season rice farming is intentional, stressing that increased local rice production is key to strengthening Nigeria’s food security and reducing dependence on imports.

FADAMA JIGAWA CARES:

Meanwhile, at a separate event in Dutse, the governor unveiled the FADAMA J-CARES 1.0 Compendium and Completion Report, marking the official conclusion of the programme implemented by the Jigawa State Government with support from the World Bank.

The Jigawa COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus (J-CARES) Programme was designed to mitigate the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and other shocks by supporting vulnerable households, farmers and small businesses.

Governor Namadi explained that the programme focused on three key areas: social safety nets, food security and livelihoods, and support for micro, small and medium-scale enterprises.

He disclosed that more than 47,800 beneficiaries in over 1,200 remote communities across the state benefited from the programme, covering all 287 political wards in the 27 local government areas.

The intervention involved an investment of over ₦4.6 billion and provided beneficiaries with agricultural inputs such as rice, maize, millet and sorghum seeds, as well as productive assets including processing machines, water pumps and livestock.

Nigerian Army Hosts Interfaith Iftar, Emphasises Unity

The Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening unity, discipline and shared institutional values across its ranks as part of broader efforts to sustain cohesion within the force.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, underscored this objective while hosting officers and soldiers serving in Army Headquarters Departments and Commands within Abuja to a Combined Inter-Faith Iftar at the Army Headquarters Command Officers’ Mess 1 in Asokoro.

According to a statement issued by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the gathering brought together Christian and Muslim personnel for a joint breaking of fast, reflecting what military authorities described as a deliberate effort to reinforce unity and mutual understanding across religious and cultural lines within the Nigerian Army.

Addressing the personnel, Lieutenant General Shaibu noted that the rare coincidence of the Christian Lenten season and the Muslim Ramadan fasting period carries deep spiritual significance, stressing that the convergence offers important lessons in discipline, sacrifice and devotion.

He explained that Nigeria’s diversity in religion, ethnicity and culture should remain a source of collective strength rather than division, adding that the armed forces must continue to embody the values of unity and professionalism required to safeguard national stability.

The Chief of Army Staff urged officers and soldiers to draw lessons from the shared virtues reflected in both fasting traditions and translate them into their professional responsibilities, particularly in maintaining discipline, dedication and commitment to duty.

Lieutenant General Shaibu also reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s loyalty to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while acknowledging the administration’s continued support for the Armed Forces in advancing national security objectives.

He further charged personnel to remain resolute in defending Nigeria’s democratic system and ensuring citizens are able to pursue their socio-economic activities without fear, while commending troops deployed across operational theatres for their dedication and sacrifices in protecting the country.

Earlier, the Chief of Administration (Army), Major General IM Abdullahi, described the event as both historic and spiritually significant, noting that the joint observance of Ramadan and Lent reflects the values of unity, mutual respect and shared purpose that define the Nigerian Army.

He stated that the simultaneous observance of the two religious seasons symbolises the virtues upheld by both Christians and Muslims, including discipline, sacrifice, humility, compassion and charity, adding that these principles continue to reinforce the Nigerian Army’s identity as a professional institution where personnel from diverse backgrounds remain united in service to the nation.

The engagement forms part of ongoing leadership initiatives aimed at strengthening morale, reinforcing shared institutional values and sustaining cohesion within the Nigerian Army as it continues to carry out its constitutional mandate of defending the territorial integrity of Nigeria.

CAS Reaffirms NAF’s Commitment to Sustained Airpower in Northeast

The Chief of the Air Staff, Sunday Aneke, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force’s strategic resolve to sustain decisive airpower in support of Operation HADIN KAI, as part of ongoing efforts to consolidate recent operational gains and reinforce stability across Nigeria’s insurgency-affected Northeast region.

In line with this direction, the Chief of Operations, Headquarters NAF, Air Vice Marshal PN Amadi, commenced an operational visit to NAF Base Maiduguri from 11 March 2026 on behalf of the CAS.

The visit aimed at reviewing the operational environment and evaluating the Base’s readiness to sustain high-tempo joint operations.

During the engagement, the Air Component and 105 Composite Group presented comprehensive operational and Base Defence briefings, underscoring the Base’s strong preparedness and resilience in executing assigned missions.

The CAS emphasised that, “The Nigerian Air Force remains focused on maintaining persistent air presence, delivering precision effects, and providing the critical advantage required for joint forces to sustain operational superiority across the theatre.”

As part of efforts to deepen joint synergy, Air Vice Marshal Amadi visited Headquarters Theatre Command, Operation HADIN KAI, reaffirming the NAF’s commitment to seamless integration with surface forces in achieving enduring security outcomes.

Air Marshal Aneke noted that, “Our coordinated air-ground operations continue to shape the battle space, constrain hostile elements, and reinforce the momentum required to secure lasting peace and stability in the region.”

The leadership engagements coincided with recent precision air operations in the Sambisa general area on 11 March 2026, which destroyed four hostile gun trucks and associated logistics assets.

Conducted following credible intelligence and sustained surveillance, the mission further disrupted the adversary’s operational mobility and reinforced the effectiveness of intelligence-driven airpower in supporting ongoing security efforts.

Earlier, the Air Officer Commanding Tactical Air Command, Air Vice Marshal MC Ekwueme, also visited NAF Base Maiduguri, boosting personnel morale and reaffirming the Service’s commitment to operational excellence.

These high-level engagements underscore the Nigerian Air Force’s proactive posture and steadfast dedication to safeguarding national sovereignty.

As Air Marshal Aneke affirmed, “The NAF will continue to dominate the air domain, protect civilian populations, and support joint forces in consolidating hard-won gains toward lasting national security.”

France Unveils “Art X Impact” Initiative Supporting Women’s Rights

The French Embassy in Nigeria has launched the Art X Impact campaign to commemorate International Women’s Day 2026, using art as a platform to promote women’s rights and gender equality across Nigeria.

The campaign is a hybrid artistic celebration spanning 16 states and bringing together local artists, civil society organisations, and social influencers to amplify messages on gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Through a variety of creative expressions, including paintings, songs, sculptures, murals, and dance performances, the initiative aims to raise awareness and spark conversations about women’s rights.

The organisers say the artistic collaborations are designed to engage communities and inspire collective action toward gender justice.

As part of the campaign, exhibitions featuring portraits and personal stories of resilient Nigerian women participating in empowerment programmes will be displayed across the country’s 10 French cultural centres, including branches of Alliance Française in Nigeria.

The initiative builds on the success of the French Embassy Fund for Civil Society Organisations (FEF-OSC) Programme, a flagship project focused on advancing gender equality and the economic empowerment of women and girls in Nigeria.

The programme is part of France’s broader feminist diplomacy strategy, which promotes partnerships with local actors to address social and economic inequalities.

Implemented in collaboration with Nigerian civil society groups and the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, the FEF-OSC programme has supported 21 projects across 16 states. These projects address key issues, including economic empowerment, climate resilience, peacebuilding, and the prevention of gender-based violence.

Programme findings indicate a strong social and economic impact.

According to the organisers, for every naira invested through the initiative, 4.3 naira in value has been generated or saved for women, families, and local administrations. In addition, participating civil society organisations have secured 546 formal partnerships with government institutions, private sector actors, and traditional leaders, strengthening the sustainability of the projects.

Capacity-building has also been a central component of the programme. Training sessions for civil society organisations reportedly achieved a 92 per cent learning retention rate, resulting in improved project management, data collection, and advocacy efforts.

Beneficiaries say the initiative has had a transformative impact on their lives. Achi Rebecca, a participant in the She Elevates Tech project by Hopes Alive Initiative, said the programme has inspired her career aspirations. “Today I am working toward becoming a software engineer who creates second chances, a woman empowering other women,” she said.

Similarly, Adeleye Balikis Arike, a beneficiary of the HEAR project by the Humanity Family Foundation for Peace and Development (HUFFPED), described the financial literacy training she received as life-changing.

“Reflecting on the training, I can truly say it was an eye-opener. I finally understood how to manage my money and be accountable,” she said.

French officials say the initiative reflects a renewed commitment to equitable partnerships that place local leadership and women’s rights at the centre of development strategies.

The approach aligns with broader African development priorities, including the African Union Agenda 2063.

FCCPC Moves to Check Fuel Price Manipulation Nationwide

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) says it has commenced nationwide surveillance of fuel prices to ensure petrol marketers do not engage in price manipulation to the detriment of consumers.

Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, Tunji Bello, disclosed this on Thursday while briefing State House correspondents during the March edition of the Meet the Press briefing at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Bello said the Commission was closely monitoring developments in the petroleum market, particularly the impact of the ongoing hostilities involving the United States, Israel and Iran on fuel prices in Nigeria.

He noted that any upward movement in petrol prices often triggers a broader increase in the cost of goods and services across the economy.

“We are presently monitoring the situation now, the effect of the US, Israeli, Iran war as it affects prices in Nigeria,” he said.

“Petrol has far-reaching effects on some of the things we eat or take daily.”

The FCCPC EVC explained that the Commission had deployed monitors to track developments and ensure that marketers do not exploit consumers.

“If somebody has reduced ₦100 or ₦200 from the price and you are still selling your own for ₦1,500 per litre or ₦1,100 per litre, we should be able to ask you why you are doing that,” Bello said.

He added that the Commission was also collaborating with the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) in monitoring developments in the sector.

Following the commission’s disclosure of alleged price manipulation by some domestic airlines during the last festive season, FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman, Bello, said that about five to six defaulting airlines would be directed to refund the excess charges to affected consumers.

According to Bello, the Commission had completed an investigation into the matter following complaints about sharp increases in ticket prices during the festive season.

He said ticket prices that were around ₦145,000 to ₦150,000 rose to between ₦500,000 and ₦700,000 during the period.

“We investigated the airlines during the Christmas period because what we found was that they colluded to fix prices at that time,” Bello said.

He noted that the Commission had already issued a report on the investigation and was currently considering penalties.

“What we are also considering is to look at a situation where we ask them to refund the excess to the passengers, which we assume that they exploited,” he added.

Bello, however, declined to mention the airlines involved, noting that the final report on the investigation would be released soon.

He also said that the Energy sector, fintech, and Telecoms account for a large share of consumer complaints nationwide.

Bello explained that electricity consumers frequently complain about issues such as metering, estimated billing and inadequate power supply.

The commission noted that many consumers on Band A tariffs, who are expected to receive up to 20 hours of electricity supply daily, often complain about not receiving the promised service.

The Commission said it works to ensure that electricity distribution companies deliver the level of service tied to the tariffs they charge.

He also disclosed that complaints involving fintech companies were common, particularly regarding online transactions and loan services.

The Commission disclosed that it had resolved over 9,000 complaints between March and August 2025, leading to the recovery of more than ₦10 billion for consumers.

The Commission, however, urged Nigerians to lodge complaints formally rather than express their frustration privately.

“Nigerians sometimes grumble more than they complain.“ Once you complain, the system generates a code for the complaint, and we can begin to act on it.”

The FCCPC said it would continue engaging consumers, market associations and regulators to address unfair practices and protect consumer rights across different sectors of the economy.

Arsenal, Manchester City Resume Premier League Title Chase

0

After UEFA Champions League action, the Premier League title race returns to centre stage this weekend, as Arsenal and Manchester City find themselves locked in a high-stakes psychological and tactical battle for English football’s ultimate prize.

The Premier League’s best took a bit of a hammering in Europe this week, with none of the six clubs in last-16 action winning.

Manchester City were ‌one of the four teams to suffer defeat and they will need to dust themselves down quickly from a 3-0 defeat at Real Madrid, when they face West Ham United away on Saturday evening.

Manchester City

They could find themselves 10 points behind leaders Arsenal, albeit from two fewer games. City were beginning to look threatening in pursuit of Arsenal after a four-game winning burst had them breathing down their necks.

However, a 2-2 draw at home to Nottingham Forest killed their momentum and the way Real Madrid cut through them on Wednesday will have shaken confidence.

City were well-beaten in the Bernabeu and will need a remarkable recovery in the second leg to salvage their European hopes, but first they must ensure they do not suffer what could be a knockout blow in the title race.

Arsenal

Arsenal, who needed a last-minute Kai Havertz penalty to scramble a 1-1 draw away to Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday, have the opportunity to really turn the screws on City as they host Everton earlier on Saturday.

Mikel Arteta’s side start the weekend seven points clear having played one game more, and while they appear to be labouring of late, they are grinding out results.

They are on a three-match winning run in the league, but the last two — at home to Chelsea and away at Brighton and Hove Albion — were both nervy affairs as the pressure of trying to secure a first title since 2004 began to show.

Everton have won only once in the Premier League at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, in 2021, but will be well-rested and will arrive on the back of successive victories and with their eyes on a potential European qualification slot.

Stakeholders Meet in Nasarawa on Cassava Bio-Ethanol Value Chain

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, has begun scaling up the production of Fuel Grade Ethanol (FGE) for blending with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to reduce the country’s energy import bill, ease pressure on foreign exchange reserves, and support Naira stability through a localised bio-circular economy.

The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, disclosed this during a capacity-building programme for stakeholders implementing the Cassava Bio-Ethanol Value Chain Development Project held in Nasarawa State.

Represented by the Director of the Economic Growth Department, Mr Muhammed Auwal, the minister said the workshop aims to address post-harvest losses, which account for about 40 per cent inefficiency in the cassava value chain. He explained that strategic aggregation hubs and rapid processing technologies would help shorten the time between harvest and processing while preserving starch quality to meet ASTM standards for anhydrous ethanol.

Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Deborah Odoh, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting stakeholders through policy coordination, monitoring, and evaluation to ensure job creation, improved farmers’ income, and economic resilience.

She urged participants to translate the workshop’s resolutions into measurable results across the North Central region. Meanwhile, the Director of the Economic Growth Department, represented by Mr Fatai Olaifa, described cassava as a versatile crop with vast opportunities and called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to ensure the success of the value chain.

He assured that roles will be clarified within the implementation roadmap, and bridge the gap between public sector regulations and private sector efficiency.

In a goodwill message delivered by the Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Christiana Adeyeye, represented by Dr. Oyedele Olusegun, he affirmed the Agency’s commitment to the secondary by-products generated from Cassava, he commended the Ministry for the initiative in terms of diversification of the economy and conveyed their commitment to collaboration with the Ministry to ensure success.

While delivering her goodwill message, the Technical Adviser to the Benue State Governor on Food Security and Agriculture, Ms. Ochanya Okoh, reiterated that Benue state is set to harness this opportunity to expand the amount of cassava produced in the state as they are one of the leading states in Cassava produced in the country, she extended the goodwill of the Governor and assured the commitment of Benue state in the implementation of Cassava Bio-Ethanol Value Chain Development Project in the region.

The workshop which also aims at improving the technical capacity of relevant stakeholders in deriving bio-ethanol from Cassava for National Industrial use, export as well as creating a new window for processing of varied products is convened to operationalize a critical socioeconomic transition under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda; and also serve as a technical launch pad for the Cassava Bioethanol Value Chain Development Project, a strategic initiative designed to pivot Nigeria from a subsistence agricultural framework toward a high-output, bio-based industrial economy which aids the structural transformation of Nigeria’s biomass potential into industrial grade feedstock.

Participants at the workshop were drawn from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Raw Materials Research and Development Council, States in the Region, Association of Cassava Producers and Processors, amongst others.

Armed Forces Neutralise Terror Commanders, Recover Assets – Defence Minister

0

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Rtd General Christopher Musa, says the armed forces have reviewed their operational strategy in recent days in response to insurgency and banditry, resulting in the recapture of some affected areas, the neutralisation of terrorist commanders and the recovery of hostile assets.

Briefing State House Correspondents on Thursday after the security meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, Rtd Gen. Musa said the President convened the session to enable the service chiefs to brief him on the current security situation across the country.

He noted that the meeting followed a series of recent attacks, but stressed that security forces had risen to the challenge and were intensifying efforts to restore stability.

“We came in here for the services to brief Mr President on the current situation on the ground. You know that there have been a series of attacks, and the security forces have actually risen to the occasion.

“We came here to brief him on a better understanding of what is going on.

“We know sometimes interpretation through the media has not been too direct, we feel we should put the record straight, which we have done, and we are glad that Mr President has continued to support the Armed forces and other security agencies in the fight against insurgency.”

The Minister of Defence further revealed that terrorists are suffering heavier casualties, while several of their commanders have been eliminated.

He also acknowledged the loss of a number of officers and men in the line of duty, describing it as deeply regrettable, but assured Nigerians that the armed forces remained committed to ensuring the safety and security of the country.

The terrorists are taking more casualties, and their commanders are being killed. We have lost several very courageous officers and men highly regrettable, but we want to assure Nigerians that it is the commitment we are putting on the ground to ensure that Nigeria is safe and secure.

“But as I said, we have adjusted our strategies in the past few days. We have taken over those locations, we have killed their commanders, we have taken over their assets, we will continue to do more.”

Musa appealed to Nigerians not to lose hope or become discouraged by reports of attacks, stressing that the reality on the ground was different from the impression often created.

“As I said, it’s war, and your war comes in and out, and again it’s normal, it’s usual with the terrorists during the Ramadan period, for them, they feel when they die, they are going to heaven, so they are ready to commit any offence or to get killed because they have a reward.

“And our appeal to Nigerians is not to get tired. Not to be discouraged because sometimes when you hear that news, you will think it is just what is happening, but it is not, it is far from that.”

He expressed appreciation for President Tinubu’s continued support for the armed forces and other security agencies in the fight against insurgency.

“The President has promised more equipment for us to be able to protect the country against the war, and we are sure of victory.

“And I assure you, Mr President has approved many things that are coming on our line, and we are working together as a team, as you can see, all members of the security forces are here to assure Nigerians and Mr President that we are on track and we will succeed.”

The security meeting convened by President Bola Tinubu on Thursday marked the first of such since Tunji Disu assumed office as the Inspector-General of Police.
