Commission Boosts Partnership with Nigerian Army Officers Wives

The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC in Nigeria, has restated it’s commitment in strengthening partnership with Wives of Nigerian Army Officers in the area of conflict management advocacy and mediation aimed at upholding human values.

The Executive Secretary of NHRC, Mr. Tony Ojukwu made the commitment when the leadership of the Nigerian Army Officers Wives Association , NAOWA visited the commission headquarters in Abuja.

Led by the Association’s President Mrs. Salamatu Farouk Yahya, the Human Rights Boss informed the Army Officers Wives delegation that, the commission was always concerned with the protection of human rights and defending the less previlaged in the society.

He said, “if members of NAOWA are empowered on how to resolve small small conflicts that can arise, they can make the Military environment more friendly for their men on the front line.”

Training Sessions

Mr. Ojukwu promised that the commission would organise training sessions for the NAOWA members on human rights “to help us be our agents to continue to preach the message of human rights protection.”

He also pledged that the commission would train NAOWA members on trauma counseling to deal with any traumatic experiences which most of the Military wives go through.

Mr. Ojukwu saluted the gallant efforts of the Nigerian Army in tackling security challenges in the country and the officers wives for standing by them.

The NAOWA President Mrs. Salamatu Yahya said the aim of their visit was to consolidate on the partnership already established by “requesting for more partnership in the area of capacity development, conflicts management and resolution as well as mediation.”

Mrs. Yahya explained that NAOWA was a unifying entity and humanitarian organisation.

She pointed out that NAOWA has contributed to the development of education skills in many Army formations in the country.

We have been collaborating with government institutions and as well as NGO’S to provide assistance to vulnerable groups within the Nigerian society,” She stated.

With this partnership, it is expected that the Nigerian Army Officers Wives and the Human Rights Commission sign memorandum of understanding, MOU on scaling up better collaboration.
