The newly appointed Director of Defence Information (DDI), Brigadier General Samaila Uba, has pledged to strengthen professionalism, promote a unified narrative, and enhance digital innovation in projecting the image, sacrifices, and achievements of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Brigadier General Uba made this known during his assumption of office ceremony in Abuja, noting that optimism, professionalism, and fact-based communication will guide the operations of the Directorate under his leadership.
Citing the words of Colin Powell, he stressed that “perpetual optimism is a force multiplier,” stressing that defence communication must reflect the victories and sacrifices of troops across all theatres.
Brigadier General Uba outlined four strategic focus areas that will drive the DDI – Unity of Purpose, Timeliness and Transparency, Digital Innovation and Effective Media Relations.
He explained that “unity of purpose will strengthen seamless coordination between the Army, Navy and Air Force information directorates, with synchronized messaging and joint briefings to project a unified national security narrative.”
On timeliness and transparency, he noted that Nigerians deserve accurate and timely information both in peace and crisis, saying a rapid-response team will be established to tackle misinformation and emerging information threats.
He stated that digital innovation would be at the centre of military information management, with more investment in data analytics, social media engagement and multimedia storytelling to connect with the younger demography.
The new Director Defence Information described the media as partners in national interest, disclosing that quarterly engagements with media stakeholders will be institutionalised to strengthen trust, deepen collaboration and counter divisive narratives.

He appreciated his predecessor, adding that rigorous fact-checking, public education and collaboration with cyber security experts will be prioritised to defend the country’s information space.
The outgone Director Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau expressed fulfilment as he hands over office, saying his tenure was dedicated to strengthening public trust, transparency, and the positive image of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
Gusau, who assumed office on 17 January 2023, said he came into the role with a resolve to uphold integrity and elevate public perception of the military.
He noted that throughout his stewardship, he remained guided by transparency, strategic communication and ethical information management in service of national interest.

According to him, every decision and strategy under his watch was aimed at protecting the image of the Armed Forces while advancing national security objectives.
He stressed that his tenure focused on strengthening frameworks for proactive communication, amplifying the sacrifices of troops, and ensuring accurate and timely reporting in the evolving information space.
Gusau said that fostering trust between the military and citizens as well as deepening media collaborations, were key pillars of his mission.
He stated that he leaves office highly fulfilled, knowing that deliberate efforts were taken to improve military-public relations.

Gusau encouraged his successor to build on the achievements recorded, embrace innovation, leverage emerging technologies, and continue to bridge the communication gap between the military and the general public.
He maintained that although his time in office has ended, his commitment to the system remains unwavering.
In appreciation of his service, defence officers presented him with a large farewell card as a mark of respect and gratitude.
