Senate President Godswill Akpabio has affirmed that transformation is not merely a slogan, but a deliberate and collective national journey.
Akpabio made the remark while addressing the joint session of the National Assembly during Nigeria’s Democracy Day celebrations in Abuja.
Speaking before lawmakers and dignitaries, he commended the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for its willingness to take bold, sometimes difficult decisions aimed at stabilising and revitalising the Nigerian economy.

He praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for its bold reforms—from unifying foreign exchange markets and granting local government autonomy to tax unification, subsidy removal, regional commission reforms and launching the student loan fund.#SubsidyRemoval

“Unlike previous administrations, this government has not shied away from tough decisions,” he said. “These reforms are gradually restoring investor confidence and setting the stage for long-term prosperity.”
Akpabio specifically lauded key reforms introduced under President Tinubu’s leadership, including the unification of foreign exchange markets, granting autonomy to local governments, tax harmonisation, removal of fuel subsidies, regional commission reforms, and the establishment of a student loan fund.
The Senate President also used the occasion to highlight the legislative achievements of the 10th National Assembly, calling attention to what he described as “a historic feat” in lawmaking. According to him, the Senate has introduced 844 bills within just two years.
Of these, 96 have been passed by the Senate, and 52 have already been signed into law by President Tinubu, reflecting what Akpabio called “a strong and effective executive-legislative partnership.”
Breaking down the legislative progress further, he reported that 107 bills are currently at the committee stage, 206 are awaiting first reading, and 409 have passed second reading.
“These figures are not just numbers; they underscore our commitment to using legislation as a tool to tackle Nigeria’s challenges and improve the lives of our citizens,” Akpabio concluded.
The Senate President’s remarks added to the day’s focus on democratic consolidation, governance reform, and the collaborative efforts driving Nigeria’s development.
