The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission has invited the former Governor of the State Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje to appear before it over alleged dollar bribery videos.

The chairman of the commission, Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado, confirmed this to news reporters in Kano State, north-western Nigeria.

He said that the commission is expecting Ganduje to appear before it next week to have the opportunity to clear his name in the ongoing investigation.

“I have signed a letter to invite him for questioning at the commission next week because this is what the law says, and we will provide ample opportunity for him to defend himself.

“Since the video came out in 2018, the commission had indicated its intention to investigate, but since the governor then enjoyed immunity, there was a limit to what the law allowed the commission to do in that regard.

“This is why on my return as the chairman few weeks ago and the fact that the former governor no longer enjoys immunity, we decided to reopen the investigation and give the former governor the opportunity to clear himself or otherwise; moreso as the videos have continued to cause the State and citizens of the State ridicule across the globe,” said the chairman of the commission.

He, however, called on all citizens of the State, who have useful information that would further help the investigation, to come forward, promising to treat such information confidentially.

Meanwhile, the former Commissioner for Information during Ganduje’s administration, Comrade Mohammed Garba, said the governor has not received any invitation from the Kano anti-graft agency.
This is just as the Kano State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in a statement signed by the party chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, urged the ex-governor not to honour the invitation, describing the move as a sinister one to dent Ganduje’s image.

“The party has realized that the reenactment of the politically motivated issue of the dollar video by the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), which is before a court of law, was part of a sinister ploy to dent the image of the former governor.

“A similar scenario was played to scuttle the former governor’s chance of securing ticket for the party’s gubernatorial election in 2019.

“This time, the detractors are engaged in this campaign of calumny to draw a wedge between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Ganduje, one of the president’s strongest allies in the North.

“The APC states that while Ganduje’s contributions to the Tinubu political project, right from the conduct of the primary election, is widely appreciated, his relationship with the President remains cordial,” the statement read.
