Ebonyi CP Charges Journalists On Professionalism

The Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police, Hope Okafor, has urged journalists in the state to uphold the ethics of their profession in the discharge of their duties.

She gave the advice when members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ebonyi State Council, paid her a courtesy visit in her office at the weekend.

The Police Commissioner described journalists as watchdogs of society and enjoined them to ensure objectivity and accuracy in their reportage.

She said; “Your job as journalists is very critical, it requires sound mind and good conscience. You should discharge your duties professionally.

“You should also be seen by the society to have lived above board in the discharge of your duties.

The CP condemned the bad impression of some members of the public about the police, because of the unruly behaviour of few officers and men of the force.

“People should avoid using the attitude of ‘few’ bad in the force to judge the entire police force and its men. There are those
who have sacrificed so much to secure lives and property of the people and are still doing so,” she stated.

The Police Commissioner reiterated her commitment to the security of lives and property of the people of Ebonyi state and advised the general public to report any security issues within their vicinity for prompt response.

She described Ebonyi State as one of the most  peaceful  states in the country, and solicited the cooperation of journalists, to end all forms of criminality in the area.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel of NUJ in Ebonyi State and leader of the team, Comrade Uchenna Inya, said the visit was to strengthen the relationship between the police, and journalists in the state.

He commended the new CP for her regard for human lives; adding that her timely intervention on the case of a child who was being dehumanised by a prophet in the Izzi Local Government Area of the state, actually led to the arrest of the Prophet and all the people who connived with him to perpetrate the act.
