The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has applauded Governor Abdullahi Sule for his administration’s efforts in initiating good education policies and programs for an improved standard of education in the state.
The Chairman of the Committee, Daniel Ogazi, gave the commendation when the management of the Ministry of Education, Isah Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic, Lafia, and Scholarship Board presented their 2023 budgets defence on Wednesday in Lafia, the state capital.
According to him, the Governor’s efforts in the education sector are yielding positive results in schools across the state.
“The Commissioner of Education, Hajiya Fatu Sabo told us that there was an improvement in WAEC performance, we give God the glory.
“She also said that our boarding schools are secured as the importance of security to students and staff as well as learning cannot be overemphasized
“We as the committee will give all the necessary support to you to succeed due to the importance of education.
“With good and quality education, we can address some challenges facing the state and society at large,” he said.
The committee assured Governor Sule of effective collaboration to address the challenges facing the education sector in the state.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Education, Hajiya Fatu Sabo, expressed her appreciation to the Committee for being up and doing to ensure an improved standard of education in the state.
“I also want to thank His Excellency, Engr. Abdullahi Sule for placing premium and for his passion for the education sector in the state. As Education is the bedrock of every society, I want to inform this committee that most courses in our higher institutions have been accredited.
“And there was an improvement in WAEC performance as our boarding schools are secured across the state.
“Sir, we will bring a bill for the regulation of private schools in the state and we want to request your assistance in that direction,” she said.
The commissioner said that the state government has planned to repair and rehabilitate schools across the state in 2023.
Also, the Rector of Isah Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic, Lafia, Justina Kotso, while defending the institution’s 2023 budget said that there was full accreditation of courses at the Polytechnic.
“Honourable members, what we have achieved in the school today was as a result of His Excellency, Engr Abdullahi Sule’s passion for the education sector and your support to the Polytechnic
“We will continue to appreciate your efforts and thank you for always being on our side for the overall development of the Polytechnic.”
The Rector also said that the Polytechnic has 10 sets of the backlog of convocation.
“I want to appeal to you that the budget for the combined convocation of 10 sets is inadequate. We appeal to you for your usual assistance in the interest of the Polytechnic and the overall development of the state,” she said.
Subsequently, the Executive Secretary of the state scholarship Board, Hajiya Sa’a Yahaya, appreciated the Governor and the committee for giving attention to the bursary allowance of the students.
She, however, identified lack of operational vehicles, lack of office accommodation, the irregular release of bursary allowance, and overhead as some of the challenges facing the board, a request which the Committee promised to look into.
