The Enugu State Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu, has described Nsukka General Hospital as a flagship facility, reaffirming the government’s commitment to repositioning it for modern healthcare delivery.

Prof. Ugwu made the remarks during an inspection of a newly installed state-of-the-art oxygen plant at the hospital, provided by the government in collaboration with health partners.

He noted that the oxygen plant, together with its cylinders, would serve as a commercial platform to meet the medical needs of Nsukka and surrounding health facilities.

The Commissioner said that, “The State government had been upgrading the hospital recently to meet 21st-century healthcare standards and addressed the evolving needs of the people.

“It recently reconstructed the hospital’s main building, including wards, clinics, and reception areas, improving patient care and service delivery.”

Professor Ugwu highlighted the arrival of a brand-new ambulance to the hospital and announced plans to renovate the old building into a modern hostel for the nursing school.

He said that, “The government planned to recruit specialised manpower, consultants, and healthcare workers to further enhance service quality and healthcare delivery at the facility.”

Professor Ugwu hailed the leadership of Gov. Peter Mbah, emphasising the administration’s commitment to revamping healthcare across all levels, including primary, general, and tertiary institutions.

He affirmed that the Ministry of Health was determined to maintain Nsukka General Hospital’s role in providing quality healthcare and training skilled personnel for the local population.
