The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has warned property developers to desist from building on water ways.

The Director-General of the FEMA, Dr Abbas Idriss, gave the warning during an interactive session with journalists in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

Dr. Abbas Idris reiterated the FCTA’s resolve to never give approval to any property developer to build on waterways, while challenging plot owners, whose properties have been marked for demolition, to go to court.

If you have approval, go to court.
“Even the Minister has said, if he mistakenly gave approval, he is ready to revoke it and reallocate a new plot,” said Idriss.

While stressing that a hundred more structures would be removed from the Trade-More Estate in the Lugbe District, the Director-General hinted that Lokogoma and Efab Estates would also be affected.

According to him, the annual flood outlook released by the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency indicates that AMAC and Gwagwalada are on high probable flood risk areas, and the Agency is prepared to mitigate the impact of flooding in the areas.

On the response time of the Agency to emergencies, the FEMA boss assured the public of five (5) minutes from the point of call.

However, he stated that FEMA was working to improve on the response time and urged residents to report emergencies on time.

The Director-General, who also appealed to motorists to make way when an emergency vehicle is on motion, urged residents to always use the 112 toll free emergency number.
