Flood: Divisional officers on red alert in Kaduna State

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, Kaduna State command has placed its personnel in disaster management unit and divisions on red alert to help mitigate any occurrence of flood disaster in Kaduna state.

The state Commandant of Corps, Idris Yahaya Adah, stated this in an interaction with affected officers and explained the need to sensitize residents of the affected areas on how to mitigate, as well as respond to the natural disaster.

According to him, the warning became imperative considering the frequency and high degree of rains in the month of August which has been predicted by NiMET to last till end of September and even part of October.

Adah said the situation demands urgent attention and the need to collectively take sensitization to the door steps of susceptible population by working in synergy with relevant stakeholders like National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) respectively.

He therefore advised the disaster management unit and divisional officers in charge of Kaduna North, Kaduna South, Chikun and Jema’a to ensure swift action towards mitigation the situation when the need arises.

The Commandant called on residents of the prone flood areas to adhere strictly to warnings by taking precautionary measures and try possible relocation from those high vulnerable locations.

“To avoid a reoccurrence of the preventable disasters in the past where people lost their lives and valuable properties worth millions of naira, leaving those places should not be seen as optional but mandatory to avoid regrets”, Commandant warned.

Adah called on residents to also report flood related issues and other incidences that poses threats to the wellbeing of the people to NSCDC and other security agencies for prompt action.
