Former COAS Yahya Stresses Soldier Welfare at Army Day

Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Faruk Yahaya (Rtd) has emphasised the need to prioritise soldier welfare in the Nigerian Army’s transformation agenda.

He made this remark while delivering the keynote lecture at the Nigerian Army Day Celebration 2025 in Kaduna.

According to reports, Lt Gen Yahaya’s lecture, titled “The Soldier First Concept and the Future of the Nigerian Army: Shaping a New Culture for Army Transformation,” highlighted the significance of putting soldiers’ needs first in enhancing the Army’s capabilities and professionalism.

The event, which marks the Nigerian Army’s 162nd anniversary, was attended by senior military officers, veterans, and distinguished guests.

Promote national unity

The celebration aims to promote national unity, stability, and patriotism while honoring the sacrifices and contributions of Nigerian Army personnel.

The Nigerian Army’s transformation agenda seeks to reposition the organization to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

By prioritising soldier welfare, the former Army Chief emphasised that the Army can boost morale, enhance performance, and promote a sense of belonging among its personnel.

In his welcome address, Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen OO Oluyede emphasised the importance of prioritising soldiers’ welfare and well-being in the Nigerian Army’s transformation agenda.

He highlighted the “Soldier First” concept, which focuses on training, equipping, and providing responsive leadership to enable soldiers to carry out their duties effectively.

Reciprocal action

Lt Gen Oluyede noted that the concept also underscores the importance of reciprocal actions from soldiers, including adherence to the Army’s core values.

He emphasised the need for a rearticulated mindset aimed at fostering selflessness and commitment to duty among soldiers.

The Chief of Army Staff also highlighted the Army’s renewed drive towards promoting a leadership style that prioritizes the needs of subordinates and their mission above personal gain.

He mentioned efforts to provide quality housing, healthcare, and family support systems to boost soldiers’ morale and performance.
