Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has inaugurated a centre for the acquisition skills built by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on the Sustainable development Goals.
This is to honour the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations on her 60th birthday and her reappointment to the UN position.
The centre, known as the Amina Mohammed skills Acquisition Centre with a block of six classrooms is set to provide programmes in 14 different skills for women and youths, so as to develop their skills and eliminate unemployment and poverty.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, Princess Adejoke-Orelope Adefulere said the centre was a unique opportunity that must be fully utilised for the benefit of the younger generation.
Princess Adefulere said the SDG Office and the Gombe State Government had worked tirelessly to construct and furnish the centre, as a strategic tool for the economic empowerment of the teeming youths in the State and to address SDGs goals 1, 2, 4, 5, 8 and 17.
She said the SDGs in conjunction with the Gombe State Government would still construct a one-hundred and twenty-bed capacity Women and Children Hospital, as well as a girls’ school in honour of the UN Deputy Secretary-General, which was expected to be completed within the next two months.
For Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, the commissioning ceremony of the Amina Mohammed skills Acquisition Centre by the SDGs in partnership with the Gombe State Government was inline with his administration’s campaign manifesto, which falls within the SDGs on human capital development for social and economic emancipation of the people.
Governor Yahaya paid glowing tributes to the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Hajia Amina Mohammed, a daughter of Gombe State, saying the skills acquisition Centre would not have established without her personal effort.
He described her contribution for humanity as cutting across all social political and cultural boundaries, saying the Government and people of Gombe State are proud of her achievements and will continue remain grateful to her love and magnanimity to the State.
“And that is why little wonder then that we emphasize on the need to enhance human capital development in Gombe, encourage our youths, provides them with skills and labour and opportunity to serve with the skills that they acquire and equally provide opportunities especially for the women fork,” Governor Yahaya said.
He gave the assurances that his administration would make use of the skills acquisition centre for the benefit of the teeming youths in the State, while pledging that his administration would continue to carry women along, considering the achievements of the UN Deputy Secretary General locally and internationally.
The Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations Organisation, Hajia Amina Mohammed, said the SDGs were based on human capital development, the environment and inclusive economy, which had been the hallmark of the administration of Governor Yahaya.
She commended the governor for building on the foundation laid by other leaders, but in a faster way, with purpose and focus, thereby giving everyone a sense of hope and belonging.
Hajia Amina equally thanked the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on SDGs for not filling the gap left behind since she left the SDG Office and for assisting her home State in the priority list.
The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr Edward Kallon, commended the SDGs Office for investing in the development of the young people in Gombe State.
He equally pledged to collaborate with the SDGs’ Office by mobilising the support of the UN Office in Nigeria and ensure the success of the centre in Gombe State.
