Group awards Scholarships to 20 Students in Abuja

The Rotary Club of Abuja Garki Neighbourhood has awarded scholarships to twenty indigent Students of Junior Secondary School, Garki in Nigeria’s capital city.

The President of the Rotary Club of Garki neighbourhood, Rotarian Zainab Omowunmi Owonikoko, while presenting the award of a one-year scholarship to the twenty indigent students said the group is always happy with the performance of the students, especially during their promotion exam from Junior Secondary School to Senior Secondary School.

Owonikoko made this known at the presentation of the annual scholarship cheque to twenty indigent students; donation of medication to the school clinic bay; tree planting; donation of waste bins and WASH activities at Junior Secondary School in Abuja.

“If students are educated, there won’t be a situation of hooliganism, Boko haram and all other social vices. 

“As a way of supporting them to continue their education as well as assisting their parents to cushion the pangs of the hash economic realities associated with meeting up with school charges. 

“Rotary is all about service to humanity, this we are doing by supporting education, providing clean water, child and maternal care; disease control and prevention.

 

The Rotary Club of Abuja Garki Neighborhood donated items such as Dettol, antiseptic soap, iodine, cotton wool, sanitary pads, brooms, waste bins, tissues, vitamin C, paracetamol, medical consumables and bed sheets among others.

Owonikoko specifically noted that the club was concerned about the menstrual hygiene of the female students, hence the inclusion of sanitary pads to meet the emerging needs of girls that might be caught unawares with their monthly flow within the school premises.

“Each time we come around the sick bay, we always meet it clean, the children are always happy having us around and we are glad to be serving humanity. 

Owonikoko also led the team in tree planting within the school premises for beautification and improvement of the school’s ambience and aesthetics.

Receiving the donations and the Scholarship cheque, the Principal of Junior Secondary School Area 11, Hajiya Gold Fatimoh hailed the club for their commitment in school the school on an annual basis, the gesture he described as a morale booster to both the school management and the students.

Gold said twenty needy students known to be having challenges in the payment of their school charges were carefully selected from Junior Secondary School (JSS) 2 and JSS 3 to ensure that the scholarship got to the targeted audience.

“A lot of things have been presented to JSS Area 11 by Rotary Club of Garki Neighborhood. It is a very good gesture to the school because we discovered that there are some parents that are finding it difficult to pay for their children, she added.

Also the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) Chairman of the School, Alhaji Jamilu Abdulkadir Ibrahim expressed joy over the support from Rotary Garki Neighborhood, adding that it will go a long way to ease the stress of parents.

Hajiya Fatima Nana Shuaib, the Nurse in charge of the sick bay said she was very happy, saying, the drugs and pads will go a long way to help the girl child, especially during their menstrual period.

One of the beneficiaries of the Scholarship, Miss Ngwu Chidera  Jacinta who spoke on behalf of others thanked the club for the kind gesture and prayed for God’s blessings for the Organizers.

“Am very very happy. Am in JSS 2B. I am going to inform my parents and am glad that they don’t have to stress themselves to pay my school fees.”
