HardFacts Studios presents The Bitter Feminist, a thought-provoking documentary that delves into the challenges, stereotypes, and systemic oppression faced by women in Nigeria and across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Created by Daniel Chukwuemeka and Ijeoma Chinonyerem, the series explores the complexities of feminism through the compelling story of Ringret, a young woman from Northern Nigeria who endured rape and forced marriage yet emerged as a survivor.
The Bitter Feminist amplifies women’s voices, calling for a bold reassessment of societal structures and gender inequalities. The docuseries is set to premiere at the iRep Festival in Lagos in March 2025.
“This project is significant to us,” says Ijeoma Chinonyerem, co-creator of the series.
It’s about giving voice to the women whose stories often go unheard and challenging the narratives perpetuating inequality. We hope ‘The Bitter Feminist’ sparks conversations and inspires real change.”
This five-episode series explores the lives of women who embrace feminism, highlighting their defiance of traditional gender roles and societal norms. Ringret’s journey stands as a powerful testament to female resilience and resistance.
Through candid interviews and powerful storytelling, The Bitter Feminist sheds light on the cultural, religious, and socio-economic forces shaping the fight for gender equality.
Each episode tackles a pressing issue: deep-rooted misogyny, the harsh impact of child marriage, restrictive gender roles, the nuances of consent, and the realities of transactional sex.
This narrative docuseries critically explores the cultural and institutional barriers that sustain gender oppression while celebrating the resilience of women who dare to defy these norms.
“The Bitter Feminist” was produced by Isaac Newton Akah and directed by the talented director, Priye Diri.
The film showcases the voices and ideas of accomplished women and will leave viewers feeling empowered and motivated.
