The Abia State Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC says it is set for the general election with over 2m registered voters across the State’s 17 Local governments Areas.
The Spokesman of the Commission, Mr Bamidele Oyetunji said there are 4069 polling units for the exercise on Saturday.
Electoral materials
According to him, relevant sensitive and non-sensitive materials have been distributed accordingly to the LGAs under the surveillance of security personnel and relevant stakeholders.
Mr Bamidele said “from the Local Governments, the materials would be sent to Registration Area Centre, RAC where the commission would camp their adhoc staff for easy distribution of the materials across the polling units in the state.’’
Security
On the security situation, Mr Oyetunji said “the Commission is collaborating with the Interagency Consultative Committee on Election Security, ICCEC, comprising all the uniform men including the military to ensure the peaceful conduct of the exercise.’’
He added that the commission has put in its best to ensure a credible election and urged the Abia State residents to remain law abiding and peaceful.
Nigerians will vote on February 25 to elect a new President and members of the National Assembly.
The electoral body cleared 18 candidates to participate in the presidential election with four candidates qualifying as frontrunners. These are Bola Tinubu of All Progrssives Congress, APC, Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP, and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People’ Party.
Their fates would be decided by a total of 93,469,008 registered voters across the 36 States of the country and the Federal Capital Territory.
INEC said generally, 44, 414,846 registered voters are female and 49,054,162 are males of the total registered voters, the young people between the ages of 18 and 34 stood at 37,060,399, representing 39.65% of total registered voters while the elderly between the ages of 50 and 69 stood at 17,700,270 representing 18.94% of the total registered voters.
