The Government of Akwa Ibom State in southern Nigeria, has announced plans to host the First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, for the commemoration of International Women’s Day on Saturday, March 7, 2026.

According to a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, the event, slated for Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo and themed “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls,” will convoke women leaders, policymakers, entrepreneurs, development partners, and grassroots stakeholders.

The gathering is expected to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women within the state and across the nation.

As part of the visit, the First Lady will commission the ARISE Senior Citizens’ Centre, an initiative of the late wife of the governor, Patience Umo Eno.

The facility, inspired by the vision and compassion of the nation’s First Lady, is designed to cater to the needs and well-being of elderly citizens.

The purpose-built centre, which is the first in a series planned across the three senatorial districts of the state, features a Primary Health Care Clinic, Laboratory, Pharmacy, Supermarket, Lounge, Library, Orchard, Games Room, Gymnasium, Chapel/Counselling Unit, as well as Kitchen and Dining facilities.

The commissioning will take place at the Medical Corridor along Uyo–Ikot Ekpene Road.

Governor Umo Bassey Eno, on behalf of the government and people of the state, welcomes the First Lady and her delegation, describing the visit as a significant honour and a reflection of the state’s growing national profile in gender-responsive governance and social development.

The statement noted that Akwa Ibom State remains committed to fostering an inclusive society where women are empowered to lead, innovate, and contribute meaningfully to sustainable development.

Governor Eno also encouraged residents of the state, particularly women, to come out in large numbers to welcome the First Lady during the visit.

The International Women’s Day is celebrated worldwide on March 8 every year.
