The Presidency has debunked allegations made by former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, in which he falsely accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of supporting the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election. The Presidency reaffirmed President Tinubu’s long-standing commitment to democratic principles.
Presidential Spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, on Sunday, issued a statement titled “Setting the Record Straight: President Tinubu’s Role in the June 12 Struggle”, highlighting the falsehoods in Lamido’s claims, which he described as inconsistent with historical facts.
Mr Onanuga reiterated President Tinubu’s unwavering dedication to democracy, stressing that the President has consistently been a staunch advocate for democratic governance.
The Presidency dismissed Lamido’s remarks as part of a broader political agenda allegedly promoted by what it termed the “Coalition of the Disgruntled.”
“Alhaji Lamido’s claims represent a distortion of history and a regrettable attempt at revisionism. He alleged that President Tinubu only rose to prominence after the formation of NADECO and claimed that Tinubu’s mother, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, mobilised market women in support of the annulment. These allegations are patently false
“In sharp contrast, Senator Bola Tinubu stood firm even before General Abacha dissolved political parties and all democratic institutions, including the National Assembly, on 17 November 1993, following his coup,” The statement read in part.
