Imam Muhammad Ashir of Al-Furqan Mosque, Mariri in Kano State, Northwest Nigeria, has emphasized that Eid-El-Kabir represents obedience to Allah and a spirit of sacrifice and gratitude for His mercy.
Delivering his Eid sermon to a large congregation, Imam Ashir traced the origins of the festival to the time of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), highlighting that the ritual sacrifice commemorates Ibrahim’s unwavering willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah’s command.
He explained that Eid-El-Kabir one of Islam’s two major festivals features the slaughtering of animals such as rams, goats, cows, or camels.
This act of devotion must be carried out using healthy animals free from defects, either by the individual or someone assigned to do so on their behalf.
Imam Ashir also called on Muslims to prioritize charity during the festival, especially toward the poor and those unable to offer sacrifices.
He urged the faithful to maintain family ties and continue visiting relatives beyond the three days of Eid, noting that such acts are highly rewarded by Allah.
Eid-El-Kabir, also known as Eid al-Adha, is celebrated annually on the 10th day of Zulhijja in the Islamic calendar.
It begins with the performance of a two-unit congregational prayer, usually held in open fields, followed by the sacrifice of animals in homes across the community.
Worshippers expressed gratitude to Allah for the opportunity to witness another Eid celebration.
Imam Ashir offered prayers for peace, unity, and progress in Nigeria, as well as the safe return of pilgrims from the Holy Land in Saudi Arabia.
